As we have already explained above, Tanbur (or tambur) is one of the oldest Turkish instruments to date and it has a very important role in Turkish music, mostly classical music. It is believed that the name “Tanbur” comes from the Arabic word “tunbur”. The origins of the tanbur instrument is unclear as it has been around in ages. It is known that the Tanbur instrument has taken many different shapes and sizes, making its way through Asia and birthing similar instruments such as tambura and dombra, but it became the instrument we know today during the seventeenth century in Ottoman Empire. With more and more people showing interest in the instrument and becoming “tanburi”s, which is the name for musicians who can play the tambur instrument, it slowly became one of the most popular and recognizable instruments in Turkey.
Tanbur (Tambur, Tanboor) is a long-necked lute, is now almost exclusively used for Turkish classical music either solo or in ensembles. This is a gracious and sensitive instrument generating a rich sound. It has virtually a hemispherical body; the bodies of the tanburs we have in our catalogue are made of wenge or walnut. The face or the soundboard are made of spruce which is a thin, resinous wood. Their pegs are in ebony. The long neck of tanbur can have up to 48 gut frets, the strings are in six to nine courses which creates a wide sound range. Tanbur is played with a tortoiseshell plectrum. The Tanbur is basically like a Baritone Saz because it uses a Pick but it's tuned to a super low pitch

Why don't I ever see people tune the Tanbur GDA, and utilize the thumb like on the Saz?

Tanbur's string - neck gap is a lot wider. You cannot control the top string with your thumb, kind of impractical. It doesn't sound good. For the tuning; we always use the bottom string unless the note is so low or the passage is too fast to catch. Also The lower string is steel, but mid-string is brass. The timbre changes a lot and doesn't sound good. That's why tuning in 4th's or 5th's not useful. We use the top strings for symphatetic resonances -sake of timbre quality-.

The name tanbur dates back to 800 BC (obviously before the arrival of Turks) and it indicated both pear shaped and bowl shaped instruments. These days, as far as I know, only the Mediterranean Turks have kept the bowl shaped version, and its tuning and playstyle are also fairly specific to Turkish culture
