Great PSA/ideas. I thought I read on a DNR page(Wisc) mandated equipment when fishing for Musky. After a quick search, I could not find mandated but, highly recommended tools/practices when fishing for large predatory fish. Bolt cutters, large nets, jaw spreaders and at a minimum, cutting the line when a deeply hooked fish were listed and keeping the fish in the water to reduce thrashing when retrieving your lure. Nippers seem to be more practical and user friendly!!

@alkatona2486 I am glad that Wisconsin is more on top of it than other states. However, I know a ton of anglers that fish without anything more than a small pair of pliers. It's a recipe for disaster :(

Benjamin, great PSA!! Thank you for focusing on this important subject. I have had to cut hooks twice this year alone. Both the pike and the musky would have died if I didn’t have the right tool. You da’ man!

Thanks for the advice. Took a treble with all three hooks completely through my ear a few years back fishing Tippy Dam. Only tool anyone could find was a rusty pair of wire cutters. Took forever to cut through just to pull the hooks out. Didn’t miss a beat though. Kept fishing all night until dawn.🤕

Hey Ben.............My name is Jay, soon to be 68 and looking to check off a bucket list item or two in the next couple weeks. I'm leaving North Carolina headed to Michigan to do some smallmouth fishing (looking for my first 20+ incher) and northern pike (hoping to find one 30+ inches).
