This might be an unpopular opinion but I think YSIV is one of Logic's best Albums and besides Under Pressue is my favourite Album by Logic. Also Fantano giving that album a 5 was complete bs but I respect his opinion.
@seansachs61052 жыл бұрын
Before this starts, I would like to state for the record that I do actually like Logic's music (& he seems like a pretty decent guy, as well). Logic Ranking in Fantano-isms: I tried to listen to Supermarket. Got through like 3-4 tracks, then stopped, but even so, it's clearly a Not Good. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind - Decent 2. Clearly his worst. Everybody - Light to Decent 4. Concept sounded amazing, but wasn't what we got. This is the start of the downward spiral. There are moments on here that are OK, & some songs start off cool lyrically, but often devolve into excessively repetitive, shallow lyrics, with instrumentals that, while solidly produced with a good selection of elements, rarely ever change or evolve throughout their runtime. Also, the skits. God, the skits. Bobby Tarantino III - Light to Decent 5. I'll need to go back to again, but I remember listening to it on release & thinking it was OK. Not better than YS IV; a bit threadbare, low-effort at times, but not anywhere close to Everybody. So I just went back to it &, yeah, a light to decent 5. It starts off with its fair share of filler, but picks up heading into the back half to be OK overall. YS IV: Decent 6. Solid instrumentals, much better lyricism after the car fire that was Everybody. Some songs hit fairly well & have good storytelling. Overall, however, feels more like a tribute to his Young Sinatra tapes than an actual, full-on installment. Some songs are overly simple & rely too much on producing good vibes, & the Last Call track, while nice as a concept, lasts a really long time. Bobby Tarantino II - Light to Decent 7 - another good bounce-back album. Inconsistent at times; the repeated lyrics still pop up from time to time & there are some tracks with little substance. When it hits, though, it hits very well. And that's like half the time, if I recall correctly. Bobby Tarantino - Light to Decent 7 - lacks some of the variety of II, but is more consistent & cohesive overall, both lyrically & sonically. The Incredible True Story - Light to Decent 7 - More ambitious than Under Pressure; arguably the best skits for an album Logic has produced (I haven't heard his mixtapes). I wish the overall narrative had been woven into the actual tracks more & had been expanded upon. It kind of sits in an awkward place between a full concept album & a regular collection of tracks. atrial is generally solid tho. Vinyl Days - Light to Decent 8 - the opposite of Incredible True Story. Feels very personal & fun. Not as consistently great front-to-back as the Pressure duology, but still has some of Logic's best writing. The short length of the individual tracks works out very well overall & it feels like Logic is really feeling the joy in what he's making, which is great to see. Under Pressure - Solid 8. Need to listen to this again. No Pressure - Solid 8. One of the biggest bounce-backs I've ever heard after the travesty that was Supermarket. Maybe spoiled a little by Logic coming back, but it's an excellent retirement album. It even has Logic's best statement on race relations - credit to him for giving the floor to Orson Welles, given the (often clumsy) way he's tackled these topics in the past.

@seansachs61052 жыл бұрын
@@Stardropreacts Thanks. I can see that. It is ambitious & in some ways, it's not as outright bad as COADM & Supermarket, just repetitive & simplistic. I remember my initial reaction to the album being harsher than some of the later stuff, given that this was basically the first time I saw these issues (repetitiveness, filler lyrics, etc) pop up and Logic hyped up the album a lot. In the broader scheme of things, it might not be as bad as I rated it.

@butterschunkmcdonalds53332 жыл бұрын
@@seansachs6105 I agree with most this rankings, Tho there are a couple things I feel differently about. For one, I don’t think Everybody is as bad as people make it out to be, Its still not great mind you lol but 3/10 bad? Nah, I think it’s very well produced, And has just enough solid tracks to push it around a solid 5/10. The opening track, The title track, 1800, Anziety, Killing Spree, Black Spider-Man & AfricaAryan are all decent or good songs, Take It Back would be good too if it didn’t drag on an extra 4 minutes with no rapping lol. Plus I think The Incredible True Story is a much more consistent and cohesive album than Vinyl Days, And I believe Under Pressure is far and away his best album, No Pressure was amazing but had a couple tracks that I coulda went without. Also if you haven’t heard the YS mixtapes yet I would give them a listen whenever you have the chance, Logic sounds so much more passionate and hungry on those tapes, Most of his all time best material come from the YS era, IMO YS:WTF is Logic’s overall best project, Like near 20 tracks of bangers on bangers, Lyrically as good as he’s ever been, Production is insane & I think it def has his catchiest tracks to date. Personally I’d rate his album as such: 1. YS: Welcome To Forever (Decent 9) 2. Under Pressure (Light 9) 3. YS: Undeniable (Decent to Strong 8) 4. TITS (Decent 8) 5. No Pressure (Strong 7 to Light 8) 6. YS1 (Decent to Strong 7) 7. Vinyl Days (Decent 7) 8. BT2 (Light 7) 9. BT1 (Strong 6 to Light 7) 10. YSIV (Strong 5 to Light 6) 11. Everybody (Strong 5 to Light 6) 12. BT3 (Decent 3) 13. COADM (Light to Decent 3) 14. Supermarket (Strong 1 to Light 2)
@seansachs61052 жыл бұрын
@@butterschunkmcdonalds5333 I just relistened to the songs you mentioned on Everybody, & yeah, the album is a bit better than I remember it. The production is solid & the elements are cool (I think I said that in my review), but I think something that I didn't explain earlier is that for some of the tracks (Hallelujah, AfricAryan, mainly the longer ones) the proportion of instrumental to lyrical content is unbalanced. Take Hallelujah for example. The instrumental takes a minute & a half to build up & does a good job at creating this grand / epic feeling, but the actual verses themselves are fairly short, & while they're not necessarily bad in themselves, there are some themes that are repeated from verse 1 to verse 2 and things aren't given a lot of depth. Then we get another instrumental break & a skit that, while cool & fairly well-acted, adds on to the massive run time. And, to be clear, my problem isn't that the songs are long; there are plenty of songs that are at least this long that I love. It's the amount of interesting content that we get for how long they are. Black Spider-Man is actually one of the best tracks on the record. 1-800 has a nice message, decent verses & good featured guests, even if "Who can relate? Woo!" will always stick with me. Anziety has a gorgeous instrumental, but the spoken-word interlude rambles at times & it ends up feeling like something that he should've (& could've) just included in his verse proper, given how short it felt. The beat switch up is great though. I actually like the instrumental for Killing Spree well enough, & the feature from Ansel Elgort is nice too. What bothered me was that it rehashed elements from previous tracks like Hallelujah without really expanding on them. In his verses on this project, Logic is often talking about how we as a society pit different groups against each other, especially racial groups, but he doesn't really go into the effects of that, personally or societally, or how we might try to fix it. And I'm not a fan of the hook. Everybody is decent, one of the better songs on here. America is probably the best song on here, mainly because it has one of Logic's more focused verses & the featured guests do a good job. AfricAryan has a great beat & an interesting first couple verses, but later on in the song, he ends up repeating the stuff he said about the single mother, basically word for word, instead of expanding on it. It just comes off as lazy. And I remember that the biracial stuff tired me out on first listen, because it felt like while his ethnicity was set up as a big thing that shaped his life, he didn't really go into detail with what he experienced, & the only time he did (on Take it Back), it felt really awkward, mainly because (1) we didn't get a lot of specifics other than "people told me I wouldn't be shit, that I wasn't welcome because of my race", etc, which he had mentioned before in his albums, & given that, his "look at how much this kid suffered" thing felt egotistical; (2) he told the skit in third person, rather than from his own perspective. The skit is good enough stuff, but I wish it had been expanded and connected to the songs themselves. It felt unfinished & I really only go back to it nowadays because of the Cole verse. So I'd probably give the album a 4/10 now. The Incredible True Story has a cool concept & some great skits, but it feels like the music isn't as connected to those skits as it could be. And that's, I think, what I meant when I said that I wish Logic had committed to the concept & gone more in-depth. Vinyl Days doesn't feel as consistent conceptually, nor as ambitious, but I think that ultimately helps lend it its own identity. It's not trying to be a big thing; it's just him having fun & goofing off, & I enjoy that. The transitions in between the tracks are really well done & help keep a consistent mood without feeling too samey. But the gap between TITS & Vinyl Days isn't very big imo, & there are moments on here (Paradise, CIty of Stars) that go clearly beyond anything on Days. I haven't relistened to Under Pressure in a while, so you might be right about it being his best. It's not a huge gap either tbh. Thanks for the tips about the Young Sinatra mixtapes btw! I'll check those out soon! Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed response; it's been a lot of fun so far talking about this stuff.
