Unpopular opinion: John most likely went to Fort Mercer in the first mission to die, that’s why he was so mute/serious, and had no strategy. he went there to die, so his family could live and so he didn’t have to live with killing his friends. But Bonnie saving his life reignited his hope for a better life.

This is what I think when Dutch sent the ENTIRE gang into a snowstorm in the beginning RDR2. Dutch had nowhere to go and was going to kill off anyone he could with elements and survival. No plan or strategy but a coward’s solution. Whoever was left alive, grab a coat and a gun. “Our time has passed.”

Makes sense. The way he goes ‘’Well’’ before drawing his gun is almost like a goodbye. And he tells Bonnie that she should’ve left him there to die, and bonnie asking ‘’did you wanna die?’’

The gang talked about him that way cause he always screws up shit for everyone but continues to act tough and smart only valid thing he did in the game was successfully rob the bank in Valentine he insults Uncle and tells him "Nice going Uncle" when really he is no better than him because 5 minutes into the mission he knocks a damn bucket over somehow and gets them into a massive shoot out

John certainly still believed that there was still something good about Bill, which is why he gave him the decision to either turn himself in or come with him by force. But John now realized that the comrade he knew had been gone for a long time and that Bill had now become what he feared most, which is why John hoped to finally be able to release him with death.

I think Javier siding with Dutch hurt more than Bill which is why John has higher amounts of contempt for Javier. They were closer. Them, and Arthur. I think Bill wasn't as personal and John understood him in some ways. Javier was smart. He knew what was going on but deferred to his leadership. Bill was just following who he'd thought was right.

@@RyanTheDarkI think it was because Javier was with Dutch when they left John, where’s bill was on the train with Arthur so he didn’t know John was abandoned. And when John showed up at camp Bill’s the first one to react to him saying “John?”. John gave Bill the chance to surrender and said he could help him (probably a lie) but with Javier, he wanted to kill him straight away (depending on the player).

@@lukekiely2450 That and well Arthur, John, and Javier were their own. They were friends, brothers, who were close with one another. From their perspective, Javier was the one who should have sided with Arthur. Sean always idolized Arthur as his older brother, and he would have agreed to help them once the cards were laid. Lenny too, was close to Arthur and viewed him as his older brother figure, just like Sean did, always capable of thinking for himself, of questioning Dutch's sanity when Arthur didn't even noticed. Kieran was scared of Arthur at first, understandably, but after that fishing expedition-oh how he'd wished he could bring him back, he had with him and the whole heart to heart they have, Kieran started seeing Arthur as a lifelong comrade and someone to confide in, so even though Kieran may have been pretty much useless, he was more loyal to Arthur than Javier and Bill ever could be, loyal to what represented the gang in its prime. As for Hosea, that was a no brainer. Hosea was always the more reasonable one out of him and Dutch and he was a father figure to not only Arthur and John, but to literally everyone else as well.

@@RyanTheDarksee that’s the irony of it. Kieran, Sean, Lenny, Uncle (he already left camp by the time the gang disbanded), maybe Mac and Davey, and John. They even had Grimshaw there. Arthur would’ve had Dutch outnumbered, except for the fact that the members who were loyal to Arthur either died or left. Sadie and Charles would’ve been there too if they weren’t doing something outside of camp.

I see that a lot of people - mostly newcomers who never played RDR1 - didn't pay attention to the end of RDR2. At the confrotation between Arthur, John and the rest of the gang, when the Pinkertons appear, Javier and Bill can be seen going together AWAY from Dutch and Micah. Bill and Javier were always good friends, that's why they band together in RDR1. The partnership between Javier, Bill and Dutch ended right there.

I think they were still somewhat conflicted. Javier and Bill were some of the most loyal to Dutch because of how awful their life situations were before he found them. They stayed loyal even when things were falling apart.

Only thing Bill lost was all his muscle mass and size from the decade gap of both game I also feel like Bill also became more of a losy shooter in his later years as you never actually see him fire a single shot. And doesn't actually engage in a gun fight with John unlike Javier and Dutch. Even a drunk Bill in RDR2 was still a pretty good shooter compare to his older skinner self.

You know, a remake recontextualizing all the scenes with the former gang members and John's past would work wonderfully. Updated graphics from RDR2, a remade Mexico area, imported features, maybe just a few more stranger missions. Man, would be a dream.

it is pretty sad seeing how irredeemable Bill has become since the downfall of the gang in RDR2 he had alot of negative traits but genuinely cared for those in the gang and was extremely loyal even gave a sincere apology to Hosea

Hey, he became a gang leader so maybe he was still loyal and caring but to his own people now, thing in the Vanderlinde gang ended pretty bad, the fact that Bill didn't shoot John in the face at spot says that deep down he still had some kind of good willingness towards him

It’s hard not to feel a little bad for Bill. By no means am I calling him a good person, but he clearly tries. Even if he makes a fool of himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think if Arthur was there, Bill would've had a different attitude. Arthur would always back Bill up when needed and Bill did the same. I always felt Bill had a better relationship with Arthur than John
