It is not about feeling useless to the world, its about being in a situation where you feel helpless and you dont feel there is a way out.

@Vincent Jurg, it's not a stupid question. If you don't know it yourself you might as well ask and it's good you do.Feeling useless is one feeling than CAN come up. But it's also a general sadness and emptiness that can come over you despite being successful. That is basically the illness part of it. This film describes it extremely well, I was really moved by the images. The black veil that falls on you, the empty staring, the anger inside wanting to fight something you cannot grab. Depression can come in waves and often you only notice when you're right in it or even when you come out of it at the other end feeling mentally and physically exhausted.

Recognizing the illness and that it is not you is the first step to recovery. Thanks for your great comments on the film.

I played in the same era as JK. As a prop I would have laughed at the idea of a winger having depression. They got the tries & the girls after the game. I thought (wrongly) I just worked for the ball thanklessly. Depression was very real for me though. It stuffed my confidence, progress in the game and relationships badly. I pissed off coaches who couldn't work out why i was combative and alienated team mates. It was terrible. Its much better now. Good on you JK for bringing this out.

Brilliant work, Julian. By bringing one man's story out, you may have aided in creating safer environment(s) for others who are struggling with mental illness to ask for help. You can never know how many lives this has touched. Proud of you, man.

Thanks for supporting my work. It is greatly appreciated. Made this one a while ago but it seems to resonate just as much now. It’s all about asking for helping - the bravest thing anyone can do. Thanks again.

Wow, You did an amazing job. The way you are playing with images to describe the topic without naming the topic is really professional!

One of the GOATs when it comes to wingers! Jonah at 11 and JK at 14 in my all time All Blacks First 15 🖤

Depression distorts your view of reality so that everything you do tastes like ashes. And you can only spend so much time going through the motions before you start losing sight of who you are and what you're worth as a person.

How the fuck did he get over it, I've been battling it for five years now and cant get over it. I have asked for help but it didn't help, I asked therapist and parents but it was only temporary. Seriously what understanding and personal discovery can help you get over this. I am just so sick of it and it has ruined my life. I just want to be happy again.

JK is bigger off the pitch than he ever was on the pitch - and that speaks volumes about him.

LOl you have no idea. I have been depressed since 14. I am now 26. I have been recently diagnosed with ADD and have gone on Dex made me manic. I have been put on Ritalin and mood stabilizers, I am manic. I am likely to be re-diagnosed with Bipolar. I am the rich kid from a doctors home. I would trade what I have been through for this in less than a heart beat. Nothing was like the pain of being in a depression, ok yeah depression is a horrible illness, but it gets a whole lot worse. You can take my word for that one.

Well, this might be a stupid question, but John Kirwan was a great player, he's one a world cup in '87. I've never been depressive fortunately, but from what I've heard, depression is about feeling useless to the world. How can John Kirwan feel useless when he's really achieved something. He's a former All Black, he's one a world cup, he's scored 67 tries for them, so how on earth can such a man feel useless?
