People rightly marvel at Lomu's extraordinary combination of pace, strength and size but the really amazing thing imho was that he wasn't just a bulldozing winger - he also had great finesse with his footwork and balance. That gave him the option to beat defenders with a step or a body swerve that would normally be used by smaller wingers such as Shane Williams or Cheslin Kolbe.

Lomu was an astonishing physical specimen. Players have gotten bigger since the game turned professional, but I still think he'd have a big impact today. What a rugby player.

Rugby players work bloody hard just to wear their country's shirt. All Blacks is a huge thing here in NZ and getting to wear those legendary black shirts is what all school boys across the nation want to do when they're older. They pride themselves in one day playing for that team. Like how SBW turned down Australia's top dollars just to play for the All Blacks. It's one thing that made me respect so many rugby players.

The most monumental player in rugby ever. What i find truly amazing about Jonah is this: people today say that Jonah was "before his time" (and rightly so, he was, by about 20 years) and that there are more players like him around these days in the modern game (wingers that are at least as big, s strong and as quick) but the reality is, Jonah would step up to play against ANY modern team and go against any player in the world today, and they'd still be traumatised by him. Amazing and unique. RIP big guy x

You guys comparing Jonah to NFL players are missing the point - it was Jonah's ability to stand in the tackle that made him so dangerous - as long as he kept his legs pumping, people couldn't hold onto him. I don't think the NFL has much demand for that kind of skill set as a result of how the game works, although I'm sure that a few of the bigger guys would be able to do it as well without the padding, etc. But when you combine that with being able to run through a gap, even if it wasn't quite big enough, and to get on the outside of almost anyone, Jonah stood alone. We haven't seen anyone like him since and probably never will.
@jsilva75869 жыл бұрын
Don't know much about rugby but saw the documentary on Lomu and was very impressed. At 275 lbs with his speed, quickness, and determination I'm sure he could have been very successful in the NFL. The one difference I see is that rugby players often receive the ball on the dead run while running backs in the NFL usually get only a few steps to pick up speed.

@michaellynch65969 жыл бұрын
Lomu was an incredible force. But, for the clown that said no one in the NFL is comparable, I've got news for you. There are probably around 50 guys in the league currently that match his size, athleticism and speed. Maybe even more if you count linemen on both sides of the ball that intentionally carry an extra 50-80 pounds because their position requires it. Both are great games but are different in several key ways. American football is not nearly as demanding in endurance but is much more about burst and quickness. A lot of the guys playing at 300 pounds and more have a natural weight of 260-280. They carry that extra weight without any significant loss in the first 3-5 yards of movement, which is where American football is decided. Can they carry that weight for a full 80 minutes of a rugby match? No. Fifty pounds lighter? Yes. Different games with different needs. Both are great games.
@TheAztec12899 жыл бұрын
Yep but they can't play 80's minutes. And Lomu coudl run the hundred in under 11 seconds at 118 kilos (thats over 300 pounds) so no- even top players of his size in teh NFL could compare- they are designed for a different style of game. Lomu was a freak- irrelevant of game.

Expert Loser, you're an ignorant troll. Lomu was a stud. No doubt. But he'd be just another stud in the NFL. He was a man amongst boys in his game and in his day. He'd be playing with the big boys in the NFL and most likely wouldn't have even been a ball carrier in the NFL. He'd be a defensive end, like a JJ Watt. Get a clue.
@moritzpbbarvencik9 жыл бұрын
Name 1 player that matches his athletisism. He's 6'5, in his prime over 120-125kg and ran 10.8 in 100m. And if he trained for the nfl, meaning he didn't need to practise his rugby skills and endurance he would have easily improved his speed even more.

Jonah Lomu emerged at a time when rugby union was only just becoming professional. Most backs would have been 6ft or smaller and around 80-90kgs. Now many centres and wings are 6ft 3" plus and weigh 100-110kgs and can all tackle. I still think he would have been world class (he would still be among the biggest and fastest backs in the world) but I don't think he would have embarrassed opposition in the same way, barrelling through 5-6 tackles.

Lomu played in a period that was the most competive. Australia won the bledisloe during thr late 90s. Australia had a massive backline bigger than anything today. Australia lost the bledisloe in 03. Lomu retired in 03. Australia have never won it since. I love destroying ignorant fools who think rugby has got so much bigger and badder today. Very little has changed since 99. Lomu ran through half a French team in 1999. Smh..lomu would have been a beast today...imagine if he was healthy. Lomu was 116kg at the age of 17. Playing for Nz secondary Schools. Ok I won.

i find it hilarious with people throwing numbers around of how fast someone can run and how big they are to compare players, jonah was a great player, maybe the one of the best wings ever, but it was his skill and vision of the game and his teamates around him that made him soooo great when coupled with his physical gifts. he wouldn't have made a great NFL player cause he wouldn't have been able to read a game at that level with a fraction of the experience of other professionals, and no NFL player could make a great rugby player cause they don't have the necessary skill set or the knowledge of how to read the game.

Rugby is a type of football. Like association football, this is rugby football. American football is another type of football. They all are offsprings of the same thing

Football was once a chaotic sport with no set of rules. In England they ended up with two schools of organised Football - the Football Association (Soccer) and those who chose to stick with the style of Football that William Webb Ellis created in Rugby, Warwickshire (thus the 'Rugby' style of Football). You also had Gaelic Football which had long existed in Ireland, which Australian Rules Football is a direct descendant of. American/Canadian Football are direct descendants of Rugby Football, although funnily enough back in the time when it was formed Soccer was more similar to both and had some influence on their formation, as did Gaelic/Australian Football. But the same could be said for Australian Rules Football, which is also played on a cricket pitch so you could add cricket to its list of influences lol.
