Yes but..Build Quality? Tesla is a Huge Wank... I have a 1986 928 Porsche.. I insert key and drive away.. none of this stupid touch screen crap... it's a car not a driving simulator... I would hate to be on a highway, when the driver next to me doesn't have his hands on the wheel... a car is accelerater, brakes, and steering wheel.. Not stupid touch screen..

@@graemejohnson9025 no offense, but reading your comment makes me think you are on the older side, and i'm 13. Touchscreen's with less buttons make the tesla look clean, which tesla is aiming for. And I think the future is all going to be digital(touches and voice commands), not many buttons. My mom also hates the stalk on the staring wheel instead of the gear stalk, so it's based on perspective

Mechanical items work 24/7.. how many times has your computer crashed? Now imagine a highway travelling with your mum.. and 2 cars around you have their computer crash..? Oh I am a 61 year old tech nerd.. I have a PSP, a gaming tower.. and professional gaming laptop.. I got on the internet in 1994.. If a car travelling at 75mph has a computer crash, the passengers are screwed...

Yep. Desugning for appearance and not for experience. If you are building an interface for an ATM that we use occasionally, sure do whatever. But something users have to do frequently, multiple times a day, you better provide a good experience. Wanna go digital, sure, but don't be cheapo and implement multiple consoles instead of a cheap $500 tablet attached on the dash. Minimalism done wrong

People forget that on a Tesla, you set the climate temp how you like it and then hit auto. When it’s cold, it will automatically turn on the seat heaters and make the air conditioning warmer to get you warm. When it’s hot, it will automatically cool the seats and cool the cabin. It saves to your driver profile! I drive a model X Plaid and I have only changed my temperature twice in months because the car just knows how I like it

It's that tasks which used to be a simple knob or button press, which could be accomplished quickly and efficiently *without looking away from the road*, are now buried in multiple screen presses. I personally encounter this every day in my Civic Si. I usually switch between two climate control settings most days. In the mornings when it's cold, I have warm air on windshield + feet. When it's hot coming home, I have direct cold air on me. Being in Southern California, this change happens much of the year. Thank God I have just a knob for temp. I can quickly and easily crank it up or down. But changing vents? I have to press the climate button to activate the climate menu, then select the new area, and this cannot be done if in reverse (like say, while backing out of my garage or work parking spot), because the backup cam overrides the screen. So I either have to sit and fiddle with it before I leave, or I have to be uncomfortable until I'm moving forward. If I could use voice commands? Sure. I'd love that. But to take away such a simplified and easy tool, just to make it needlessly more cumbersome is the epitome of why I hate putting things on a screen. It's NOT faster. It's NOT easier. And it often requires you looking AWAY from the road, making it less safe. In some hypothetical future world where cars can read your minds, I'm sure I will love having a clean, buttonless experience. But until then, leave me my godd-mn knobs.

The UK has a VERY strict “no distractions” law when driving, (obviously including the use of Mobile Phones). At what point does the centre console just become a laptop capable of causing significant distractions? Cleaning up the UI sounds great in principle. But if things are being hidden behind other menus then this is just a recipe for disaster.

But, until then, if you're going to design a product meant for use today based on how it will be used tomorrow, you have to build in safeguards that make it practical to use in the meantime.

It was misfiring badly, took the top off the distributor, noticed a space.. Grabbed the foil out of my cigarette pack.. made a simple contact.. And got home.. try that in a Tesla?

it’s slightly worse. yes it needs to be fixed, but most of it is over exaggerated. i set the climate and only make minor adjustments while driving that don’t require much attention at all. i’m not going to try to change the climate in any car if i’m in a dangerous situation

I think a good comprise is a programmable physical buttons like streamdeck. You can customize/update the buttons in software but you still have the tactile feedback of a button

We've had a model 3 since 2019. On her first drive on a cold evening after the update, my wife had to pull over because she couldn't figure out how to get the defroster going.

My favorite way to quickly turn on the defroster while driving in the Model 3 is to push the right-hand button on the steering wheel and say "turn on the defroster." I also like saying "My butt is cold" to turn on the seat heater.

I already avoided cars if they didn't have specific features in the interior, in spite of the performance and handling features. I guess I'm going to add digital gauge displays and touch screen only controls for anything that isn't audio to the deal breaker list. As much as I like the idea of an EV and the performance, I still gotta live with the thing on the inside, and I can't live without certain features like physical HVAC buttons and wiper/turn signal stalks. Even at the potential of sounding dated and shouting from my porch in my rocking chair.

@@golfislife27 That would make things easier, sure. You know what would be easiest, less presses, and cost effective when it comes to repairs? Buttons. If the screen cracks or dies, you lose functionality of everything the screen controls. A button stops working? You replace that one usually inexpensive (especially compared to an entire touch screen) part. I'm fine with infotainment being controlled by a touchscreen. Literally everything else has no business being stuck behind touch menus with no physical button or stalk alternative.

Glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed and was upset by these UX changes. As someone working professionally in UX, I was surprised and disappointed that a leader in automotive design and software like Tesla came out with such a bad update. They probably didn’t do much research/testing to back up these design changes. I have a very hard time understanding what benefit the designers behind this intended to bring to the user.

Quality control, car technology (except the HUD and OTA) and experience with building cars is something Tesla is lacking. Also, touch controls is a very limited interface. Audi has tried to fix it with seperate display for heat controls and vibration feedback, but physical buttons and wheels are still best for some functions. Function before design.

One counterpoint for the seat heat. I've had 2 Model S: 2013 and 2020. I can't count the number of times I inadvertently turned on the seat heat (as did my passenger) trying to change the cabin temperature. They were too close together.

Using the screen while driving is actually not allowed by law in Germany. I drive a Model 3 and the new software really is a step back. I had problems to turn on the radio because the icon disapeared. The trip info has been moved to a sub menu. Info of air pressure of the tires is also gone.

I like companies like Honda with the new Civic and current generation Accord, specifically going back to physical controls. I would always prefer to buy a car with physical controls to one with giant touchscreens. It’s always easier to use without looking and you don’t have to worry about it working exactly the way you expect it to

Touch Screen or Capacitive Buttons for controlling basic stuff like climate, windshield wipers, turn signals, hazard button should be illegal. it's very dangerous while driving. I'm surprised that the EU hasn't banned it yet. the only reason Tesla is doing it, is to cut down on production costs.

This. I'm kinda hoping EU helps us out here. US and Canada don't seem to care yet. I spent a crazy stormy mountain drive adjusting my windshield wipers up and down. At one point I had to leave them on high or risk going over the edge. Spent a week on forums trying to figure out if auto wipers was broken or if Tesla just makes the worst version....cameras, apparently cameras are suppose to see the rain? Oh and the windows were fogging, so I was trying to hunt for defrost since auto climate doesn't know.

I love having buttons for my climate control and the 8 shortcut buttons for anything in iDrive. Touchscreen plus control knob w/shortcuts is great for the rest of the infotainment stuff. Not at all a fan of everything-touchscreen overcorrection. PS: Automatic seat heaters been around for a couple years; my seats and steering wheel activate automatically but also lets me adjust the temp with a hard button, magical.

If asked, they might say that we have just organised similar type of options under one roof... but my solution for this is that, along with this change they should have added a dashboard sort of a option where we can add all the buttons that are frequently used or can even mark/ long-press an item as a favourite... this way we can still have one option activation... what you guys say...

Seems like someone from the top of Tesla wanted the light show rolled out for Christmas, no matter if the UI was polished or not. Phone calls are hidden behind the side camera video when blinking. The clock is missing half of the last number when in 24 H format that everyone outside US using etc. Seems like 5 minute fixes, but why did no one notice this and fixed it. Don’t tesla have testers?

I just bought a new car and having physical buttons for important things like HVAC, wipers, seat controls, etc., made me choose the car I bought. I hate having to take my eyes off the road to adjust stereo volume or turn the temp down a few degrees. I would have bought a Tesla if they actually had more tactile controls that I could use without looking at them.

I took delivery of my Sweden-delivered MIC Euro spec TMY 6 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago I received the v11 upgrade. v11 upgrade enabled automatic seat heating settings, and since I enabled auto I have not changed my front seat heating setting. It just works. I wish they had similar setting for the rear seats.

What would be great is user programmable buttons that map to the driver profile. And have a few physical capacitive buttons that could also be programmed. Also, having shortcuts on the bottom taskbar to whatever you need, like direct seat heater button, direct defrost, etc.

saw this coming the moment i heard "it has almost no interior buttons" many car features should have dedicated and custom shaped physical interface. eg: volume, my car has both buttons for small adjustments and a wheel for large. Hiding them behind any menus is a major error. they keep creating the tesla UI as though its a tablet on your lap, which exacerbates its single point of failure for UX.

Glad everyone else is finding this issue too. Hopefully gets fixed. For me V11 is a big downgrade from V10, both visually and in terms of functionality. Heated seats, wipers, trip counter and dash cam are all hidden in menus now. Unfortunately on the Model 3 you can't control the wiper speed with the scroll wheel. Its something I really want them to add.

To be fair: I always had my phone mounted on the dash to control music/podcasts and navigation. Touch screens are fantastic for those things. But temperature and volume controls are always better with physical controls imo.

I don’t really care that there are no buttons. I just use voice command for everything. But I do think a row of physical (and most importantly reprogrammable) buttons. Just physical buttons with an Led Screen that could be set to any function would be great

I discovered this by accident: Touch and hold the temperature setting option/number and a small pop-up window will appear where you can change fan speed, seat temperature setting, and sync or split the HVAC temperature level.

I haven't touched my heat seater button every since they went automatic. Also I LOVE not having the heat seater button on screen. Do you know how many times I have accidentally hit the thing in the summer because of mistap or someone brushing their hand/whatever across the screen?

Voice commands work great for climate controls. “Turn on rear defrost” “set the fan to 7” “set the heat to “72” “set wipers to 3” and so on. Everything should be voice commands most of the time anyway because then you don’t have to look away from the road.

A Fullscreen keyboard made sense for the iPhone when Steve Jobs pointed out that a physical keyboard is a "waste of space" when not in use. That was one of the more brilliant parts of the 2007 iPhone. But cars are complex and dangerous machines, not devices with a QWERTY. I like the "predictive actions" part, such as having the drive modes automatically visible when the car stops or sliding out lock door options.. but there are things that shouldn't require fiddling with a screen.

Marques, respectfully, it is mapped to a button on the steering wheel, the voice command button. It's just that many still aren't used to using them because they never really think to give them a shot. If you really think about it, a voice command is technically even safer than a button if you give yourself the few minutes to get used to it. They're great and eyes stay on the road entirely. We need to adapt. Now I do think they can and will add more options to select the bottom customizable shortcut buttons.

VW has ruined its latest Golf 8 by removing all the physical buttons and knobs. This has prompted a global backlash against the car.

I feel the other thing that doesn’t get mentioned is that you heat/AC gets turned on automatically every time you open that temperature tray… so if I just want to turn on my seat heater, I also need to manually turn off the heat/ac before closing the tray

Just throw in a row of customizable physical buttons. Then people can have the buttons they want. For button graphics you can have removable caps or stickers. You can even make the entire thing aftermarket customizable.

...my 2019 Genesis has physical buttons and dials for most functions, but also touch screen equivalents. Plus it has a heads up display which means you don't need the stupid yoke to see most important functions.

I would do this: A button in the steering wheel that makes the screen change to different regions (4 or 6) where you can slide your finger and activate functions depending on the direction of movement. In that way you only have to tough a certain region and move your finger. You don't have to look for that. Since you will see the options on the screen when pressing the steering wheel button, you don't have to memorize anything, but once you do, it's an easy gesture you can do without looking. If you put actions in the pie menus every 45° and create 6 regions on the screen, you can have up to 48 options.

I haven't seen any comments mentioning voice controls in Teslas. When it comes to adjusting stuff that's usually buried behind a menu or two (like the defrosters) I just use my voice and it works every time. As a 2018 Model 3 owner. You will get use to it. If you are a brand new Tesla owner, you wil find it easy and get use to it. if you hate touching screen. Voice commands work good and fast.

I on the other hand use the temperature gauge twice a year. Once to set it up to 21C during the summer and then down to 19 for winter. My aircon is always on with automatic fan and I don't change anything else - just to clarify I drive Volvo V60 with auto seat and steering wheel heating , it doesn't require any other climate control than those 2 operations per year.

Not only dangerous but more prone to errors. On a crowded screen, it is very difficult to hit the correct, intended button when driving. I find we often have to "brace" our hand by placing one finger on the dash and hit the screen with another finger, otherwise we miss entirely or hit the wrong control;.

Why dont they do smart heat seating, where when the outside temperature is low it activates automatically for a couple of minutes until heating has adjusted the inside temperature. They could have presets and manual adjustment and make it profile based, just like the seat postion. Or do they have that?

The turn signal in the Plaid being on the same side of steering wheel, and non blinking, and being above and below makes no sense to me. They should be split left and right sides of the wheel. And the horn being on the side too mixed with other controls is really weird too.

Turn signal was designed to work the same as a regular stalk. Up (top arrow) for right turns, down (lower arrow) for left turns.

@@McKayPorter i never noticed that. But it’s the same problem with column and wheel mounted shift paddles. There’s no way to know which to use when the wheel is turned. Like in a roundabout or in a plaza with consecutive left right turns. If I need to turn right to enter a parking spot on the left. Hope to indicate to those around me. That’s a tough ask with that plaid design where the buttons do not light up or flash when activated and they’re right next to each other and they rotate to opposite orientation when wheel is turned.

Does Tesla not have voice controls? Neither of you mentioned them, so I am assuming Tesla models don't have voice assist - which makes me very surprised. The simplest thing for temperature control, for example, would be to just tell the car what you need without having to tap on anything on a screen.

1 Month MYP Owner here. Yes, they do have voice controls and they work okay, better than most, imo. Some things are easy, some you have to look up and some don't exist, like: "Turn on Fog Lamps". The rub? They use ATT in the US, so were I live it's spotty, voice commands won't work. Yes, I can hook my phone up as a hot spot and use a different carrier, it becomes a hassle. So if you have decent reception and a basic grasp on voice commands, this would work for most people.

there is a speed limiter button on my Mercedes' steering wheel, which allows me to set the speed which I cannot exceed: like 30/50 km/h in the city, 120 km/h on a highway - the one that I use all the time. you can reset it with another click and set a new one without looking aside from the road in a fraction of a second. I want this one to be in my Tesla which I know will never happen

Tesla has this on autopilot and the setting exists to be whatever mileage you set relative to the speed limit. It allows 5 miles per hours limit over the slow speed streets and whatever limit you want on the high way.

I think Tesla want all to be automatic. In that logic it makes sense to hide functionalities ; because user will not need to interact with it. But they are not really there yet. So we are in an awkward situation where the automation and the easy of use are both absent. I clearly liked better the old user interface of my Model Y.

Touchscreens like this are dangerous. Imagine you look down to change the temperature (because you can't just feel for a knob) and look up and the car in front of you on the freeway is suddenly stopped. Scrreeech!

A really easy way to fix these issues for tesla would be to change the screen seasonally based on temperature or weather. The car knows its freezing outside, so during winter months when its cold it should make the bottom row of controls include a slider for the heating, the seat heater, and the defroster. In spring and summer, it should have the seat ventilation and AC slider more accessible. If you preheat the car before getting in, the car should automatically make the seat heater and other cold weather options the first priority. Muscle memory wouldn't be too much of an issue if you only have to change things every six months. You could set user preferences based on preferred cabin temp and if its too cold, it should provide the options necessary. All the tech and sensors are already built into the cars.

The fact that everything is controlled by a touch screen/computer doesn't rule out the possibility to have physical buttons. The reason to not have them is usually cost cutting, less importantly interior design. If Tesla wanted to, they could've had physical HVAC buttons easilly.

What about the mini toolbar that appears if you raise or lower the temp by one degree? I use that to get to things like defrost. Also I set seat heaters to auto. For temp changes a lot of times I use voice commands to say I’m hot or cold and it changes it by a couple of degrees.

Removing almost all buttons and physical handles is mostly a way of reducing costs (whatever the official story is, it is only a story). You can have those on the screen, too, but not remove items that make cars simpler and safer. When technology is advanced enough to do those things automatically without failure you can do that without impacting safety or simplicity a lot. BTW, how do you set the seat properly, if you have to always get up and press the screen and go back in the seat to see if the new position is right? So much simpler with 2 buttons on the seat.

Agree that some of the controls have gotten worse in the update. But you can access the HVAC screen by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, so you don't have to hit the temperature icon. Also the automatic setting for the seat-heaters work great in my opinion!

This also forces you to turn the climate on. A lot of time I have air off and just turn my heated seat on. Now to bring up the menu with the seat it turns on all the air.

This is exactly what happened to the MK8 GTI and people are not happy. I understand the interest and tech of updating these but there are certain things I Def believe should be analogue and consistent like HVAC, Windows and volume but I guess this is me coming from an early 2000s car 🙃

I bought a 2021 Subaru Outback, which has a 11" touch screen. Turning the heated seats sounds similar to the Tesla, multiple presses. To make things worse the software is so slow you can wait several seconds for a response. It also crashed and rebooted several times. It was so bad I gave up and traded the car in for another make of car. Thanks goodness I got a good trade-in offer.

we've had cars for so long you'd think that they would know what people use while driving and so would have those items easily accessible. I'm surpirsed there is no voice option to allow you to just ask for what you want. I think something that would be good would be to have a system that would be available when need, the car should know you always use something so it should then present that item or if the car sense that its raining it should make the wiper settings easily available.

There is a voice system and it actually works really well. You can just push a button on the steering wheel and say "turn on the seat heater" and it works every single time for me. But just like smart home stuff, some people just don't want to mess with voice assistants and just want to push a button.

Programmable “dedicated” macro keys (buttons) and sliders/dials. That’s plural! With custom led icons. No Touch Bar. That will defeat the purpose of physical buttons
