Thanks for this rating, really enjoyed it. I think we are really lucky to have Nolan in our lifetime. A newer director with original ideas is harder to find these days. That said, I have not yet seen a few of these dunkirk, oppenheimer I am just not fan of war/bomb type films. But the ones I really like and apparently so do you are Inception, dark knight, interstellar. Saw them all in theaters multiple times while they were out with inception and dark night being tied as my favs. Loved the video and your perspective 😊

Tenet does make sense, but only if you have a whiteboard and a lot of coloured pens.
@stevenbatke247511 ай бұрын
Yup, I had to watch several videos to understand what the hell I had just witnessed. And that is its biggest flaw. It felt like a joke, too clever for you to laugh at immediately, so the comedian has to explain it to you. Then you chuckle slightly and say “Oh, okay. I get it now. That’s uh… that’s kinda funny”. Give me a story, easy to follow, with clear character motivations. Because Tenet is not that.
@darksole559311 ай бұрын
@@stevenbatke2475then tenet is not for you. Tenet is a movie that goes for a specific goal and it hits every mark. It is by no means a bad movie.
@legochickenguy493811 ай бұрын
i disagree with the notion that a movie has to make sense for it to be good or for someone to like it. I think that's rather closed-minded. The movie actually tells you to not try to understand it like 20 minutes in, so that's clearly not the intent either.
@colinhiggs7011 ай бұрын
@@legochickenguy4938 So far it looks like we have someone saying that movies should be easily understood, someone saying that movies don't have to be understood, and someone saying that Tenet is perfect even though it is hard to understand. That's a fair spread of opinion so I'll add mine. I like when a movie *can* be understood, where everything that you need to understand it is held within the movie. I also quite like when you have to work to come to that understanding. There is a sense of satisfaction that comes from working it out. Not that I want every movie to be like that - often I just want to disengage my brain and enjoy. But I'm glad that intricate plots exist because sometimes I want to watch and work to understand them.
@legochickenguy493811 ай бұрын
@@colinhiggs70 I enjoy most movies for much the same reasons, but I simply enjoy Tenet for different ones. In the particular instance of Tenet, I think trying to fully understand a film, which is actively trying not to be fully understood, is like trying to shove a square peg into a round hole and then getting frustrated at the hole because it's round. That feeling of frustration is, I think, what a lot of the film's detractors got out of the experience. The people who liked it simply used a round peg, which is to say that they were willing to embrace the different mode of perceiving/enjoying the film that the film itself was telling the viewer to use. I'm not gonna tell people what they should or shouldn't enjoy or how to do that, but I just want to make the point that, if, as a viewer, you're more willing to open your mind to other ways of enjoying movies outside of what you're used to, then you'll probably end up enjoying a lot more movies, and isn't that the goal as a viewer, to enjoy the experience?

I disagree with you on the replay value of Dunkirk. I’ve seen Dunkirk at least 5 times now and it’s one of the best war movies made in recent years. Plus, your complaint about the lack of emotional connection to the characters? The point of Dunkirk is that it’s a survival thriller; it has the capacity to make you care enough for the soldiers trapped on the beach and the people trying to ensure their rescue. The absence of stuff like character backstories and development is what sells Dunkirk as a fast paced action thriller. For that reason, as well as the direction, cinematography and so on, it should be ranked a lot higher than 11.

I'd might rank "Inception" where you rate "Tenet," maybe even lower. The weakest characterizations of all his films & being much too easy to follow for a story about dreaming (but where 95% of the time, the dream worlds are so bizarrely "realistic" as to be un-dreamlike...Or maybe me & most people I know just have way more interesting dreams than Nolan does?) My favorite is definitely "The Prestige." And, I go back & forth on whether his masterpiece is "Dunkirk" or "Oppenheimer." In the latter, he's at the peak of his craft...but I just think "Dunkirk" is so...strange. I don't know how else to describe it. Because it is very interested in time as a character in a survival situation...which perhaps is one reason you may not feel strong emotional resonance with any particular character. I am not sure you should. I've heard from soldiers, it was hard coming home to be rooted & admired for as a hero, when all they did was survive something terrible. And, that seems to me a wildly ambitious truth to depict in a big budget war film. After my 20th birthday, I was extremely invested in the release of "The Dark Knight" & even played the viral game. I was there opening night. By now, I've seen it many times. If only the film was a bit bolder...and not so much "Heat meets The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," I'd at least be nostalgic for it. But it is also a film so firmly rooted in its era, the Bush era, and certain things have aged so poorly. Obviously most people seem willing to ignore that, I just can't. I also think the fight scenes look much, much better in "Rises." Maybe it's sad, but now I realize I deeply, deeply loved the movie....but exactly once, on its opening night.

Hot take: Oppenheimer is not going to hold up over time. It’s masterfully done, but I don’t care about the characters nearly as much as other Nolan films, or as much as I feel Nolan wants me to. And what really bugged me about it, is that the thesis statement felt like: genius men will not be appreciated in their own time. Which seemed like Nolan commenting on himself, and being up his own genius ass. It felt like the most pretentious outing in his filmography. I guess I’ll have to give it another chance. But I’ll be few years before I want to bother. Barbie will be watched much sooner. Good video.
@darksole559311 ай бұрын
I don’t see how it could be pretentious when it’s the story of another persons life. He’s literally focusing on the genius of a real person not himself. That being said, he is a genius, and deserves to brag about it. But he doesn’t so…
