This was one of those kick starters I was super heavily interested in however a lot of the kickstarters failed and so I wasn't willing to back anything. I don't remember if I knew about Shovel Knight before it was ever even on Kickstarter but I know I was at least there after it first came out because I definitely bought it before they added any of the DLC.

I think what ultimately killed the whole project were the firmware and display. If they were assembing the components by hand, then who’s to say they aren’t programming the microcontrollers by hand as well? And if anything was wrong with the PCBs, then there’s possibly some microsoldering involved. This is absolute logistical hell for any small team operating at scale.

Great video, I was a huge fan of Shane and NEARLY pulled the trigger on backing this since I'm a big controller nerd too. I didn't though, as I've never backed anything and awaited a commercial release. It never happened, and I followed this for years and was glad with my decision not to give them money.

It's kind of amazing how patient people are with kickstarters. If it's a year late, stop asking for a delivery date it's obviously not happening. Ask for a refund as soon as they miss their first deadline, and if they refuse contact your bank. Don't wait around and get screwed.

oof. I feel bad for the backers. My first (and last) crowd-funding burn was waaaaay back in like 2012, also with a controller! It never saw the light of day but at least the creator tried his best to refund everyone or provide alternate options. after that I swore never to back a product again. I did end up backing some things here and there (1 video game - Prodeus and a few board games -- all turned out successfully thankfully.)

to be fair they could've added a "tournament mode" which disables all superflous functions. a lot of corsair boards have a switch on the back to turn on tournament mode and has a big red LED and a door to keep the switch engaged in tournament mode

There's like ten or so universal controllers on the market right now, this thing is not a new idea anymore. 8BitDo, Retro Fighter, Retro-Bit, Hori, Logitech, PowerA, Hyperkin, etc., these guys made some very decent to great universal controllers whether wired, bluetooth, 2.4Ghz wireless or a combination of all of those with pretty much every features known to man right now such as rumble vibration, haptic feedback, macro support, hall effect joysticks, trigger buttons, NFC support, shortcut back button, touch pad, shoulder buttons, 4 face buttons, 6 face buttons, d-pad, etc.

I will never hand money over to a hardware Kickstarter unless I know the product design is basically complete and that the team has a lot of experience bringing products to market. Hearing that they were being hand assembled doesn't surprise me. A lot of these projects fall into an awkward batch size. Most are too big to assemble by hand but also too small that assembly houses won't do it without charging prohibitively expensive rates.

The problem was that it was not sustainable, especially in direct competition to today's platforms and support dwindled fast after it launched. It was a very short lived success, whereas the ALL controller is a kickstarter that took funds and didn't even get off the ground.

Considering there are already products like the magic-ns (a lot cheaper than the alternatives mentioned in this video) that offer connectivity of established and widely used quality controllers across PC, android, and console platforms, there isn't a big advantage that the product brings to the table. Yes the promise of macros and button mappings are nice, but I think these were just ideas that weren't actually possible between platforms. I would have thought Logitech, madcatz or Hori would have already brought a controller to market if it was possible. There's just too many variables and proprietary technology to have an All-In-One device that works seamlessly between all platforms.

Ok, but how did this ever take off? Why did it ever get funded? I've played multiple FPS at a competitive level and can tell you from the first glance that it looks like cheap garbage, has too few buttons, an unergonomic design and that the sticks will likely be absolutely irredeemably bad. What the fuck was the idea behind the faux dpad(?) in the center, with those triangular buttons awkwardly placed like that? If you got scammed by this please learn what a good controller should look and feel like.
