I live among Madrona trees but mine never get large enough to turn a bowl. A friend brought me some wood and included this piece of Madrona. Large enough for a good sized bowl, I jumped at the chance to turn it. Little did I know of it's hidden, spooky secret! Finished in shellac.

I vote that the three facets fit the piece well. Glad you are doing well enough to keep the videos coming. I learn a lot from each one. I got some live oak burls in varying sizes recently and have turned one already. It made a fun rustic bowl with a chip is the outer wall near the top and an irregular hole near the bottom. Wouldn't have stuck with the piece before I started watching your projects. Thanks Phil. We all appreciate you!

Madrone is what everyone hear in north California uses for fire wood, I deliver cords of it and as a fellow turner I hate to see it all burned. My Madrona just kinda lean this way and that. The largest one I have is about to fall onto the neighbors house. Of course, it's been about to do that for 15 years. He is not worried and neither am I. It just keeps leaning and leaning. It will be gradual and won't cause any damage. 😊

Phil. All I will say about the bowl you made is Absolutely Stunning. Now I would like to say to the new people learning to turn is listen to this unbelievable Turner. He is dead on about where you stand when working on a piece. Phil talked about while turning. It also goes with finishing your piece. I was making a few salad bowls for my daughter, and the one I was making for her was 11 inches round by 10 inches round. I'm down to the sanding and finish. I created a chemical reaction by sanding at 3600 rpm and using high friction polish at 3600 rpms. The polish got so over heated the bowl blue up. If I had been standing dead center I would have been dead. Because I was standing to the right of my piece not one piece hit me. To this day I ask God what happened?. Not one piece hit me. Why ? I listened to what Phil says and talks about!

I started with carbide tools based on a recommendation and now trying bowl gouges. A year with carbide and now bowl gouges are giving me fits. Beautiful piece Phil!

Hey, Phil! I never expected to see you go "Fancy"!! It suits you, but I think I still prefer your "Rustic" work! While I know you don't like using the Carbide tipped tools and prefer your bowl gouges, I think discretion was indeed the better part of valour in this case. You always say "safety first" - not standing in the line of fire of the cracks in this piece for instance - so you did the right thing. Also, whether you like it or not, people listen to what you say - you have "influence - so it's important that you show the "right way" of doing things! Having said all that, once more you have produced a thing of beauty out of a piece of wood that 9 out of 10 people would've left on the firewood pile! Congratulations and keep up the great work!
