Also many people don't know this POOH'S GRAND ADVENTURE THE SEARCH FOR CHRISTOPHER ROBIN is DTV. But the animation is so AMAZING For many years I thought that it was theatrically released.

As someone whose father is... unfortunately reflected in Aladdin's, his character is surprisingly natural. Having someone who is incredibly proud, and does honestly love but doesn't understand how to show or express that. Often times it also connects to feeling like they themselves failed and not being able to face it properly.

@@BrazilianImperialist I didn’t watch the Lion King remake until just last year because Beauty and the Beast was so awful that I couldn’t even finish it. The Lion King remake is actually pretty good. This is coming from someone who hates the Lion King due to a lot of issues with the original film. What I really liked was that they show Nala escaping from Scar to find help. And showing that part of Scar’s jealousy was driven by his lust for queen Sarabi. I also liked the extra screen time for Timon and Pumba and I think the VA’s for them really put in the effort. Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner (sorry if I spelled it wrong) did a phenomenal job voicing those characters. That being said the remake doesn’t get good until the second half because it seems like James Earl Jones really phoned it in when returning to the role of Mufasa. And the songs were not nearly as good (even down right awful) except for Hakuna Matata. Some parts of the movie didn’t really translate well with the realistic style either. That said I’m glad I watched the remake and dare I say It liked it more than the original film even if the first half was weaker.

It still annoys me that one of Doug's criticisms of Aladdin and the King of Theives was why Aladdin's father never came back after finding enough treasure to provide for his family. When the same scene that reveals also says he did come back but couldnt find Aladdin or his wife. He thought they were dead so he left.

I know this comment is 2 years old as of writing but I feel the need to respond and fully express my love-hate relationship with Doug's reviews after 10+ years of watching. On one hand, he's still super entertaining (most skits aside), and I can see how he's developed the following he has gotten. On the other hand, he keeps missing important plot points in many of his reviews to the point where I think it's reasonable to say he sucks at his job.

Personally I wouldn't want him to be too strict through and through, but a better, longer build-up between him and his son would've been better perhaps? A slow-burn to build up the father/son relationship until the father is actually comfortable enough to show some humanity, not just have him be kinda socially awkward as a dad. Originally Return of Jafar was going to just be a two part pilot on tv, but he suggested a VHS release and everything spiraled. Also, on the topic of Atlantis Milo’s Return, he was also in charge of that and he described it as “the closest I could ever get to making a Hellboy animated series”. They had 23 episodes when the plug was pulled. Man I wish he’d gotten to do what he described in that panel.

And she gives him a look that could only be described as pity. It's a surprisingly deep moment with a pretty dark real-world equivalent. Kovu has been raised in what is tantamount to a Scar Cult, fed lies about Scar's greatness and how Simba was an evil usurper. Despite the vast population knowing Scar was a monster, Kovu doesn't because of how insular the cult was and you can compare that to some pretty insidious beliefs of real groups today. Obviously, Neo-Nazis are the cliche example. (Every argument online eventually comes to Hitler!) But there really are children being raised in those groups being taught that Hitler was right and everything the world believes about him are either lies or exaggerations and to even vaguely parallel that in this movie is a dark concept.

Thank you for clarifying, it's been a long while since I watched that movie and I only saw it that one time so I didn't really remember how they handwaved it. Still I kind of agree with NC on how the plot doesn't quite add up. As I remember it I think it would have been better with lower international stakes (no huns, or at least n immediately imminent huns), just an escort mission where the emperor needs someone reliable to guard the princesses on their way to the arranged marriage, let Mulan and her bf have a fight on their own merits (even good couples can have bad fights without dragon involvement) and then wrap it up more or less like it was. It still wouldn't be a great movie but it would have been a little less frustrating.

The Alladin King of Thieves review is honestly missing some marks, as if Doug didn't listen to the dialogues closely. Firstly, the father did return for his son and wife after obtaining wealth, but he couldn't find them. Why and how, that's a weak point, but still, he tried to return and failed. So, when he discovered he still had a son, he was understandably confused: he was a thief for ten-something years, and he didn't find himself in a role of a father. He in fact got tricked into going to the wedding by Iago, who wanted to find the treasue himself. And then, he fails to actually recover the scepter: its done by the bad guy instead, who then kidnaps him and forces him to find the treasure for him. This forces Alladin to go and rescue him: Alladin didn't want to find the treasure, he just wanted to rescue his father. Then, they took the treasure: they were already there, on this super elusive island, so might as well try: father son bonding time. However at this point daddo learned his lesson and decided he cares for his son more (probably because the damn son travelled half the world to rescue him). The plot and motivations made sense. And that they could have been clearer at times? Fair point: I just wanted to point out that everything WAS explained.

And that was even more so with one Michael Eisner in charge of the Disney conglomerate. While his era started well with the introduction of Touchstone pictures, the label of the more mature themed films they made such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and introduced Jeffrey Katzenberg to Feature Animation that he may have a hand in jump starting a Renaissance (which he would), but his decision making skills began to take a turn for the worse when his No. 2, Frank Wells, died in a helicopter accident and despite having kindled a great working relationship with Katzenberg at Paramount prior to the two jumping ship to Disney (thereby proving his capabilities), Eisner denied the man the promotion he showed some interest in prior to the seat going free. Who knows what Disney would look like if he agreed, but his decision would make Katzenberg his worst enemy. In time, I will go into the consequences of this.
@TheRachaelLefler6 жыл бұрын
Well I like it if they do it right. As a kid, one thing that bothered me about Disney movies was I was always wondering why they never showed what happened after marriage or hooking up the main couple. As an adult now I can appreciate the value in movies about how to make a relationship work. It's not bad in and of itself to explore the possibilities beyond the "happily ever after" ending.
@RedJLP5 жыл бұрын
To continue, Katzenberg left Disney just six months after being denied the promotion and the first thing he did once that was over was to start a new studio, DreamWorks. The parting was not a happy one. Between five years of lawsuits over the severance package and insults from Eisner including the phrase "little midget", you can see his motivation is revenge. As such, he wasted no time in producing controversy with the first animation to come out of the studio, Antz in 1998. I'll let you guess why accusations began to fly shortly thereafter

I was never sure if Aladdin was in the same home that he always was in, or just moved around whenever the guards found him. Since he still had tattered drapes, pillows, and even a secret storage area. Did Kassim just check the house that his family was last in? He didn't bother asking the merchants "Hey, where is my family?" I mean....the townspeople KNEW who Aladdin was. So....one could argue that, he did go back and look, but probably not very well. It involved chaining a bear down, typically by one leg or by the neck, and other animals were set on the bear to fight it (usually they used English bulldogs...a breed of dog that got their name because they were in bull-baiting, which is the same as what was done to the bears). Bear baiting was still a sport at the time Pocahontas was living in London; it was not until 1835 that baiting was prohibited by Parliament. One of the few things that this film got right historically is that the people of London did not shun Pocahontas (who was, by that time, married to John Rolfe [it's still debated how much say she had in that arrangement] and was introduced to London society as Rebecca Rolfe) and they treated her as something of a celebrity because the Virginia Company wanted to show people that they could "convert Indians to Christianity" and the company saw an opportunity to promote further investment with the conversion of Pocahontas and her marriage to Rolfe. Ofc, like Disney's first version of Pocahontas, they left out a lot of the "messy" details like the fact that Pocahontas was captured at the age of 17 by English settlers and held captive for a year, during which time she (supposedly) became a Christian, was baptised "Rebecca" and married Rolfe a year later. She also died at the age of 21, most likely from some illness contracted in London. But hey, those kinds of facts get in the way of telling good stories...and mediocre ones, like this film.

That's fascinating and also horrible

I think we can all agree how horrible Pocahontas 2 was completely horrifying except Where Do I Go. Disney screwed up so bad by making it more historically correct instead of just sticking with their own story.

I feel like it needs to be mentioned that Zira in Lion King 2 was voiced by the same woman who played Annie Hayworth in The Birds and voiced Yubaba in the English dub of Spirited Away

I can see why Return to Neverland, The Jungle Book 2 and Beauty and the Beast the Enchanted Christmas are not on here for two reasons. 1. Return to Neverland and Jungle Book 2 were theatrical releases. 2. He already did a Disneycember review on them back in 2015, while he Disneycember review on all of these movies in 2016.

I totally agree! I still watch that movie today and find myself laughing and crying at it! Heck I’ll watch them both back to back sometimes pausing the middle of the first movie to watch the second! I loved the father he was so relatable having grown up with a dad in the military. Bambi’s father was strict but not in an unloving way but in a very understanding way; and when he has to make a decision about keeping Bambi or giving him a new mother, it breaks my heart. I don’t know, I could talk forever about this movie, I almost enjoy it more than the first because it tells a complete story with so many characters, and the original while having a great story, didn’t give many characters fleshing out. I love this movie and will defend it til I die. And...I’ll get off my soapbox now 😶

Return of Jafar was one of my favorite sequels because Iago was my favorite Disney character of all time. When I was a little kid, I had an obsession with birds (they're still my favorite animals!) and especially parrots. Because of that, I liked Iago a lot, so I was thrilled with a whole movie about him! And you know what, sometimes I still even look up the songs he sang in that movie on youtube. I really like Forget About Love. (You're Only Second Rate was another great song.) It was also genuinely upsetting when Aladdin was going to be put to death. It's still a little disturbing to watch even now.

I am watching this because i know my child mind mixed a lot of movies around when i saw these as a child. Here are some examples i found out due to this video: - I thought the Revenge of Jafar was considered a good movie because of it's "dark tone" as i was too scared to watch it as a little child - I really liked all the Lilo & Stitch sequals and as a child they were as good, if not better than the original because they focused more and more on weird alien stuff. - The Lion King 1 1/2 is known outside America as The Lion King 3, and my parents presented this one and the first one as the same movie fron different perspectives, which left me like 3 - 1 1/2 more than the orginal for it's lighter tone.

I always wondered why Genie says “Alibaba had those 40 thieves” in A Friend Like Me instead of saying “your father had those 40 thieves.” I mean you would think the genie would know that Aladdins father was Alibaba. I mean he knew who Jack Nicholson was.
