Yeah. When I speak Japanese, I get treated differently. Plus, I find Japanese people in general have very little ability to detect a person's level of Japanese and adjust accordingly to help the flow of conversation become better. This implies that Japanese have an in ability at empathy. For example, calling customer service. Even if you explain in Japanese that your Japanese is not native or very good, the customer service agents still typically employ the most complicated 尊敬語 which makes it very difficult to communicate for a non-native speaker... One could make a lot of effort to learn Japanese, be relatively good at 日常会話, yet if one were at a restaurant with an asian-looking or Japanese friend, even if you speak good Japanese to the shop worker, they may never make eye contact or respond to you directly, but rather speak to your friend instead. Extremely insulting. A person makes great effort to learn your language only for you to blow them off like that. It's a very bad image of Japanese people.

Got into a fight the other day for refusing to pay for Otoshi, so I went to a maid cafe to relax and take some pictures with my phone. After they kicked me out and reported me to the police, I went to a Ramen Jiro and told them no garlic for me please. After receiving a beating and spending the night in jail, I thought it would be a good idea to go to a Purikura Machine to take pictures of my swollen face. It wasn’t a good idea. @Lightice1
@Lightice1 10 ай бұрын
I think that otoshi is more of a table charge than tip. It's rarely big enough sum to resemble tipping in America and some places I went to as a tourist just plainly said "table charge" in English and then gave the otoshi once you paid. The impression they gave me was that you're paying for the privilege of entering a place that gets so much traffic that they need to limit the number of people they serve and in return, to be nice, they give you some snacks so that you don't feel like being ripped off.

@Lightice1 Sounds more like it. Still better than the tipping system in the US. Here in Europe tipping is completely optional and table charges DO exist. At least in Spain, many tables in the exterior of the restaurant/pub/etc. do have table charges, they don't say it as a flat fee, more like a percentage extra just for sitting in a table out of the building.

Atleast they don't ask u to tip by percentage of bill to the waiter and get hounded if u tip less so you are forced to tip more. In fact its probably insulting to tip there. Otoshi is just a table fee and it will be culturally expected by japanese customers to have something on the table while they wait so it is fine. Ramen jiros would be dealing with high number of customers so they expect the customers to say what they want based on just one question. Cultures can vary easily due to time and circumstances. Then again that's the beauty of culture.

When I went to Tokyo I traveled with a friend going to Tokyo University who was fluent (I don’t speak a lick). More than once we were asked to leave a store because I was a foreigner, they didn’t care that my friend could speak to them fine. I think they just assumed I wouldn’t buy anything because I was a foreigner. Or were too lazy to deal with it.

I've read that they're sort of "soup nazi" like with their rules and etiquette. It also doesn't look very tasty to me. A lot of the pictures I saw showed the pork / veggies / noodles piled so high most of it was well outside the broth. Not sure what the point of a bowl of ramen is if the food isn't in contact with the broth.

I think I can explain Otoshi as someone from the UK: Here in the UK we have "Pub food" which is usually just peanuts or another small salted snack. Otoshi seem to be the Japanese cultural translation of that. It also might fit because alot of Japanese beers are light beers, which in the UK are traditionally drunk more as a refresher and less as something to get drunk, so you'd often have Pub Food alongside a Light Beer.
@megadesu69

Actually I'm pretty sure most common Japanese beers are full strength lagers, which are usually stronger than your typical bitter.

@@megadesu69 That's where the slow progression of Americanism stepped in my friend; Lagers replacing Bitters and other thicker less alchoholic beers as Pub/bar mainstays. It's a strange case where the mannerisms failed to adapt around the consumption. Ale is more commonly drunk in the UK now too, which is also much higher alchohol content.
