I was expecting for him to round up 10 sheep, then chop down trees, then finally retrive the kings sword (from his tent), being handed the king's daughters hand. It could have gone either way at that point, either the men were so inspired they won the day, or Rowan has to lead (aka Solo) an attack on some weak point. A couple of missions in kills the opposing faction leader, which then causes his entire army to rout immediately.

That is the old cliche in games. Hero and sometimes his or her small party do all the work. In instances I recall "strategy" or "choice" to deploy troops or not. In some RPGs if possible I just forgo sending anyone but myself and group. Given I'm one of those people that tries to mitigate loss to nothing and maximize my self/unit. Especially if in story it rewards me for such😅. Though gotta love the cut scenes that make it look like a war happened and not a one way slaughter by a few🤣. Or the parades after saying though main character was pivotal to remember the sacrifices... What sacrifices I did all of it anyone who died was on the enemy faction🤣.

It's not seen as an issue, but often it was preferred to having a voice, for better roleplaying purposes (imagining their character to sound any way they want)... Obviously they gave voice acting after the first, for more mass appeal. But yes, it's probably one of the references. (It works for most RPGs with actual dialogue and characters.) Everyone coming with their generic Skyrim. So lame. (Skyrim was basically old 3 months after Oblivion came out... Yes, Oblivion came many years before, that's the irony. It should be easy to see through the game as basic, people just endlessly wanting to be trendy by it.)

It didn't bother me much when I could at least read the PCs exact dialogue, but there were /are also RPGs in which you could only select a keyword or a general tone of reaction. Always found that annoying and more immersion-breaking than the clumsiest dialogue and voice acting could be.

It was but it wouldn't have been one wasted without good reason. Peter had to jump into The Hobbit to keep it here, in NZ, to meet the deadline WB had set. Otherwise WB would've taken it elsewhere, and we may have ended up with something worse. When Del Toro left production his vision for the films left with him. So Peter jumped in and was given six months by WB to set things up, that was so much less than what he had for LOTR. Within six months he had to create his own vision for the films, because no two directors think, work, or do production the same way. Peter winged it, and really didn't have a chance to use the actors more. He got what he could for whatever vision he was trying to recreate from that hell.

It was the studio itself that belonged in that sentence. Whatever flaws I thought the Hobbit movies had I still enjoy them and even amidst the strange decisions I see much talent in every corner. Peter wasn't on his "A" game. Not like his first dive into Middle Earth...also Bad Taste, Braindead and Meet the Feebles.

I was just trying to say that watching John Callen up there flexing his acting muscles like a true champion makes how he was utilized in the Hobbit seem something akin to hiring Bruce Lee for an action movie and just having him splat a pie in someone's face every 30 minutes.
