Technically, Finland has been independent 4 years during its history. I mean "really independent": 1991-1995. Let me explain. During all the period 1917-1941 it was constantly dependent of foreign policies, the German one mainly. 1941-1945, bad memories: the Nazis brought them into their plans, and they believed in them, creating them some virtual balls with the fascist ideas of "suursuomi" for instance, but were rapidly cut by the USSR, as nazi-balls deserve to be cut off. Between its loss of WW2 in 1945 and 1991 it was dependent of the big brother on the eastern border, economically, strategically and geopolitically. "SF" was suppoed to stand for "Suomi Finland" but the whole world knew it meant "Soviet Finland" for real. Then came the 4 years of Finland's real independence with the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Sadly for them, it ended in 1995 when Finland joined the EU, becoming a puppet of Brussels which is a satrap of Washington. And the last years, have accelerated the motion: Finland is now a perfectly docile and tamed puppet of the NATO and Washington via the EU. Culturally "pikku amerikka" (small America, as some speak of Finland) has been a US buttlicker for decades, but it now went to its final state of servitude and submission. The illusion of "itsenäisyys" in Finland is quite touching of naivety though.

@@Qwerty-ly8qk Where's your "sisu" guys, of course there are things that can be done. Resist! Affirm yourself! BE yourself. What you call "globally" is in fact only in the western world (AKA US puppets) .... 11-17% of the world, depending of the way of counting. A part on decline. The world is changing, the US, NATO, EU, are losing power, the new world to come will be without them, dont sink with their Titanic. That would be a pity, really, in 2-3 generations when the US control over the western world will only be a nightmare of the past, to admit that Finland disappeared to follow a dying imperialism.

And it should actually be called East Karelia/Carelia - West Karelia is a part of Finland, some of it has always been since there was a border against Russia. The Finnish name Karjala looks to come from karja, the Finnish word for cattle - but actually it comes from the Russian word for border: kraj/kray, where the Genitive form kraja was taken as karja in Finnish. So the Finnish and Karelians name meant kinda 'Borderland' for the Russians, but Karelians reinterpreted it as 'Cattlelan'. The cattle was long the gold for Finns and Karelians, like camel for the bedouins, or like reindeer has traditionally been for the Sámi people north of Finns, Scandinavians and Karelians.. Also the Finnish word for a border is now raja, deriving from that same kraja/kraya. Before that there was no difference between Finns and Karelians, except some tribal differences, but no real border. Even the concept of international border was born then.
@jokemon9547
@jokemon9547 3 жыл бұрын
The archaic meaning for karja is likely from a Germanic term meaning "warband" or "army" meaning Karjala would have meant something along the lines of "Land of armies" originally. Also there likely existed a border or a no man's land of sorts where Tavastian and Karelian lands merged into each other, due to the numerous hillforts in that particular region encompassing Southern Karelia and Southern Savonia provinces. One of the only possible traces of runic writing in Finland is located in Sulkava municipality and that particular spot is believed to denote a possible border mark of some sort.
@timomastosalo
@timomastosalo 3 жыл бұрын
@@jokemon9547 It's less likely Karjala would derive from a Germanic word - it's a natural development. that the word Karja in Karjala came from the Slavic kraja/kraya - it's locally more important, for Russian had already become an important language in the eastern Karelia. So, your comment on the origin of the name Karjala is now noted, no need to repeat. It's just less believable than the natural develeopment, that the Russians caused the border in th eeast of what was to become Finland.: they divided the Karelians. There was no inner need for the Finnish tribes to form such formal borders against each other. I mean the Turku area, who were first the only people called Finns (suomalaiset), didn't make borders against Taastians with hillforts, nor Tavastians against Savonians, or the Bothnians. They likely had some juridical borders between owners of certain lands - but no international borders. so they had no need to that with the Karelians who spoke something quite close to Savo - and Western Karelian is still an understandable dialect to Western Finns - perhaps more than some coastal dialects in western Finland :) So, the Russians caused the division that separated the Eastern Karelians from other Finns - including Western Karelians. The time with hillforts against Karelians and Russians you described is from a later time than what I speak of. It's after the split has already happened - not form 'at that time' as you put it. The Russian pressure was so strong (they likely had the numerical advatage then already, though not as huge as nowadays), so there are records of the Finns in Turku area asking assitance from the Swedeish crown against the Russians, just before Sweden started to conquer Finland. I didn't mean Fiinish & Karelian languages or dialects didn't have a word for border. The older ones are piiri & kehä, but they specialized to other meanings then. The importance of the birth of the concept is reflected in that the Finnish word for border is raja, deriving from the Russian kraja, kraya the more English spelling. It's one more proof how the russians caused the border to be born. Before that the Finno-Ugric nations were in some lose contacts from the Baltic Sea to the Ural Mnts and a bit beyond, nation by nation, tribe by tribe, vollage by village. Sure they had borders - but nothing as absolute as the one that formed against Russia.
@jokemon9547

@@timomastosalo I will get into the etymology for Karjala. If Karjala is actually from the Slavic term kraj, why would Russian sources drop the use of the original term/form and instead opt to use the Finnic form of the word in Korel/Korela/Karela? Why did they stop using their own name they gave for the region? Also, because Slavs newcomers into that region, only starting their migrations in the 7th century, wouldn't it be more likely that the term Karjala already existed among the Finns and Germanic people conducting trade there centuries before the east Slavs arrived? The term suggested to be the origin for "karja" by the way is the Proto-Germanic harjaz (later Proto-Norse harja). Well, if you look at a map of hillforts in Finland, you can clearly see that Tavastian hillforts go along the general area that surrounds their heartlands, with biggest concentrations being in the east but also in the west towards the Finns. The important trade route (Tavastian Oxen road) linking the Tavastian heartland to the southwest coast also has hillforts running along it. Now I find it a bit amusing that you say Tavastians didn't build hillforts against Savonians, since in that time period, Savonians didn't exist yet. They had not formed. Savonians territories at the time were inhabited by Tavastians in the west and Karelians in the east, it was those two mixing together later that formed Savonians. Bothnians are more or less the same, they had not yet formed into a separate group nor would they have been large enough to threat Tavastians in any meaningful way. Also since northern Tavastian territories were mostly uninhabited forests used for hunting and fishing, there wasn't anything important to protect, unlike in the south. And of course no "international" borders existed, because they were mostly tribes. International borders in the sense of today weren't even really a thing for the rest of Europe. Now while it is certain that their territories overlapped and merged into each other, there still would have been a vague idea of where the other's land end and where the other begins. And of course the languages of the tribes would have been similar, if not pretty much the same due to all of them being dialects of Northern proto-Finnic, they hadn't developed much from each other at that point. But a common language didn't really mean anything, especially for tribes. Now, while Novgorod definitely caused division between the western and eastern Finnish tribes, it likely had existed for centuries before. Archeology already shows that the western Finnish material culture and eastern material cultures were unique and distinct from each other already in the 8th century. Conflict also likely occured before Novgorodian influence over Karelians, but since we have no records of those events, it's just speculation unfortunately. Conflicts also likely existed among Finns and Tavastians, but again, we have no records of the intertribal relations before Swedes and Novgorodians arrived. Those hillforts in the specific area are varied in their dates. Out of the 14 I have looked into, 2 were historical from around the 1300s, 5 were unknown and 7 were from the iron age. Those 7 iron age ones weren't specified much further, except for 2 with the other being from the viking age and the other being from the 1100s to 1200s. Also one problem with these, as is with other hillforts, is that they haven't really been excavated nor researched archeologically in any meaningful way. This doesn't definitely prove if they were built before or during the Tavastian-Novgorod conflicts, but some of them definitely were built before. Am I saying Tavastians and Karelians were going on annual raids into each other territories before Novgorod arrived? Certainly not, but what I am saying is that occasional hostilities/conflicts/wars did occur. Now what are these records of Finns asking for assistance against Novgorod? No doubt conflict did occur, since the first Novgorod source mentions a campaign against Finns in 1042, with another 2 happening in 1123 and 1142. But is there evidence of Finns perhaps inviting the Swedish over which then led to Finland Proper to be incorporated into Sweden? Also have you considered that these hostilities weren't a new thing among western and eastern Finnish tribes, but this is just the first time Novgorodians decided to start writing about these conflicts that they were now a part of due to their presence in the region? Again, no doubt that Russians caused a further divide between west and east due to the east being under their sphere of influence, but I do not believe the relationship between the tribes before that to have been peaceful 100% of the time. After all, they would have had their own interests in mind. Finnic myth and folklore seems to suggest that wars/conflicts between individual families or clans occurred over the ownership of hunting grounds, so there is that. And yes, the Finno-Ugric world was more "connected", if you will, from the Baltic sea all the way to the Urals, with Permian artifacts and jewellery making it's way into Finland and most likely something from the Baltic making it's way to the Urals. But again, this was people working in their own interest. It was trade after all. Trade to get valuables, trade to get essential materials perhaps not available in one's own land etc. I even hinted at the borders not being absolute and set in stone by saying they merged into each other before on my previous comment. But even if the borders were very loose and undefined, it still would have been very clear to them that the other tribes, even if they spoke a similar if not the same language, practiced similar beliefs and had a similar culture, they still were a "different" group- This idea persisted long in Finland among the regional groups until nationalism began to form a unified Finnish identity. Most groups didn't even marry with "outsiders". And the idea still persists today with dialects, regional cultural practices and more, although they are much less influential than they were 200 years ago or even 100 years ago.

@@jokemon9547 I'll just answer to the Karjala etymology in the beginning. Border areas of languages have many examples of names being borrowed back and forth. For example Huopalahti in Helsinki was originally Haapalhti in Finnish, or likely with the older form for the word: Haapalaksi. Laksi was inflected like yksi & kaksi - but later changed to lahti with the analogy of lehti - it eased up. When Swedes said haapa, iborrowing, but think it as the local name - like it now was. t sounded close to 'hoopa' in Finnish ears, or it was borrowed so early, that the sound change in Swedish from like bat to båt ('baht' to 'bawt') had not yet happened. Even now, the long a sound in Swedish is on the verge to change to å in most words. This 'hoopa' went to huopa in Finnish, were the long oo (aw) sounds changed to uo systematically, until like maybe 18th-19th centuries. Finnish coast with long Swedish contacts has many names like this which are odd because they have been borrowed back and forth. One is Vantaa, which comes from 'Vanajantaka'. Lappland with Sámi contacts has some names like that. The same goes easily with the kraya: Finns and Karelians changed it more fitting to their phonology, and after that the Russians wouldn't recognize it as a name deriving from Russian., so they took the native Karjala, but for Indo-Europeans the consonants are relevant, so Karel, Korel is the core there, for them. They didn't know what type of endings Finnish has. When we get Vikings there, the name Karl, Karel fits there like a glove. It's not like words with kar, kae, kara are rare in languages. In Turkish öanguages kara means black - but of course that has nothing to do with Karelia. Just shows that same sounding words are not the only factor how words are loaned.
@timomastosalo
@timomastosalo 3 жыл бұрын
So it wasn't like the Slavs stoped using their own name: they had only spoken about border, and the Finnic side took a name for the area from that. And when there already the word karja in Finnish, it can't have taken long when it was associated to 'cattle', like the Finnish word means. The -la ending has been used a lot for lands or countries in Karelian language/dialect - like there's names like Kalevala, Pohjola for lands or region ... with the same ending -la. Which in Finland became used more for farms, or townshios, city districts. So the Slavs simply took the Finnic name, when it had been formed. Before that they had spoken about border with just one more Tsukhna, Chud group, who they didn't know by name, or thought part of some others they knew. Finns maybe didn't a term for the people, before Russian contacts began to make the area something standing out from the other Finnish areas, besides the earlier dialect differences, which were likely small, changung just a bit village by village.. Viking influence was more relevant by the coast of the Bay of Finland, and especially by the Neva river. They were more interested to travel to the rich south through Neva and linking waterways, than to venture far in Karelia. But Russians really came to the north, especially to Arkhangel a bit later on, when they discored that useful river Dvina/Väinä for their commerce, and were able to conquer the river.

karelia would never have autonomy like åland under finland. Ålanders are remnants of the swedish elite enjoying holiday without taxes or military duty, while karelians are finns just like tavastians or savonians.
