I want to point out that gorbachev never really liked the cold war. One of his reasons for such radical changes was to try for good relations with the US. With him in power longer the cold war would probably end, or at least "end" with the two countries in somewhat of a more amicable rivalry

After Gorbachev, Russia tried to join NATO, but its application was rejected twice. Gorbachev would not have changed anything. If we want to end the Cold War, NATO would have to be disbanded and all elites in US who haven't changed since mid-20th century would have to be dismissed.
