We got some big news from Bloomberg. Are VPNs in China blocked? On ADVChina we cover the great firewall of China and it's ban of virtual private networks. Internet censorship is a Chinese way of censoring the apps like Netflix, Youtuve, Twitter, Facebook, and all Google services. As an expat living in China, it can be difficult to get the best vpn for China. The ban would mean that foreigners in China would not be able to access any websites that they would normally access. Hopefully this news is not true.

One of the strangest experiences for me travelling is crossing the border from Hong Kong to mainland China. On one side free access to internet sites, no banned websites, cross the border and suddenly everything changes. It is a weird feeling.

I am disappointed to see the nationalism and racism comments came from my own Chinese people, making me not want to live in China ever again in my life. Although I am proud about the progress my country made through its developments, we solved lots of problems like poverty and illiteracy. There are still tons of problems exist in our society just like this banning internet, yet our people are turning arrogant, not willing to communicate with the rest of world, which makes me worried about the future of my country.

I own a VPN company and it has been my living for almost 10 years now, and it isn't possible to programmatically or physically ban VPNs without completely blocking access to the internet outside of china, but they could enforce the law if you are caught using one which sucks for me because i am always financially affected by these type of things...

@@shadejalik4769 Those articles are basically written by boomers, voted for by boomers and only affect boomers and younger people not using a VPN. I think there is no way it could affect anyone that is not proven to be circumventing the measures such as a celebrity or big social media person. The normal person will just need to get a VPN. In some EU countries even there are already some hurdles for internet users like access to "adult" content or some digital rights agencies threatening to sue platforms if they don't shut down certain countries' ip address range. In the end this is a tiger without teeth and in no way comparable to internet censorship in China even back more than a decade ago. Still protested against it in Frankfurt and was amongst the crowd of bots/paid-lobbyist (ironic as most German CDU/CSU politicians seemed a bit "bribed" in their ineptitude to reason). The directive passed, tough shit. I cannot blame myself for not going like those few dozens of thousands that don't wanted the Brexit but did not vote, eventually leading the the outcome of "leave" by 51.89% (way less than a million people over parity).

Treddian If you see this as a long term commitment, but not as a short term actionism that inevitably happens from time to time... The point of all that is a form of protectionism on which parts of the chinese economy seem to be based on, yet the assumption that a whole society can be controlled in such a fashion might be too far fetched. Even the golden shield project was never designed to be impenetrable, VPNs existed back then as well. I mean the question is if some decisions you can read or talk about is just the tip of the iceberg or an extreme example that made it into the decision process and therefore to the media. Maybe seen as evidence for a system not understood in other places of the world as what it is. From my point of view, such decisions need people that support it strong enough, and that requires some lack of comfort with the actual situation. Most probably it has to do with economic reasons or the need to express influence and power. In the moment those people become somewhat comfortable with it or get a feedback from the results it had, the motivation curve to do so drops quite fast. But no one has a subscription to ultimate knowledge and objectivity, so everyone is more or less subject of a bias. Judging only the bad aspects of something might be as wrong as ignoring them. Another reason to "not completely crack down" (which is kind of impossible anyway) could be the potential development of a double classed society, which most restrictions often lead to, in which people suddenly find themselves privilegded to do things others are forbidden to do, but for completely legit reasons. That conflict leads to questions why the same law forbids and allows the same action not to anyone, and that softens most restrictions anyway, as long as everyone is subject to the same law. Censorship (i don´t think all censorship and regulation is bad, there is a value in protection of the young) to general information is a problem for the assumption/theory that the same law exists for every citizen. If those problems are only adressed skin deep, it leads to some form of populist decision culture, which nowadays not only China is affected by. One way to check would be to ask if websites like wikipedia are blocked (i think it was because of some blacklisting regarding certain keywords).

Internet in China without VPN makes live almost impossible, it's not just being able to watch movies or videos in youtube. I work as an architect in Shanghai, we need references, tutorials, information about materials, providers etc, if you use Bing to search for a building you want to use as reference, you cannot find anything because many websites about architecture are blocked, no matter what you try, then you connect VPN, search in google, and magically that building appears and a lot of information about it. The same can apply for information about living and procedures in China, you can find help in your own language, but most of them are blocked or are super dificult to find without google/vpn. And of course, youtube is one of the most important sources for learning chinese, or anything else, like Revit or 3d modeling.

Alex CUI they are just copies of KZbin resources. As a Chinese young person like you and me. I hope you are not ignorant and arrogant about it. Yes, we have everything in China it’s because we have VPN to be learn and copy from outside world. The learning resources are way better and more in quality in English than in Chinese. You have to accept the fact that English is the world spoken language people use to share knowledge. If you are paid to say this, I can understand. But if not, I will sorry for you and worry about china’s future if the younger generation tends to be so arrogant and naive.

After watching all of this video, I have to say I am really grateful that Serpentza brings out the information that we can't bring out ourselves. To tell the outside world what the inside is like is really hard for a local. As the censorship is harsher and harsher, understanding the other side is more and more difficult. But I really don't like a channel full of unhappy things in China. It just makes me emotionally, really sad. I like it when Serpentza saw things from several perspectives instead of pure complaining. I will continue to follow Serpentza anyway because he was my most beloved Vlogger when I first visited KZbin and to see where it may go.

How much pound dropped after the fucking referendum. the referendum is a completely fucking waste of time and a destroy of the UK economy. :) It only took Chinese government two years to build the high-speed train. With the democracy as you demand, it will take UK more than 15 years or never have the high speed train. Democracy is what we call 'NEVER MAKE THINGS HAPPEN'. It's not good. It's shit.:)

China Internet is the world's most closed Internet, not on the Google, Facebook, Twitter, youtube and other world-class sites. China's Internet is the Internet controlled by the Chinese Communist Party, does not allow freedom of speech, it is illegal. China's Internet is strictly reviewed and keyword filtering, can not let you see the June 4 incident, Falun Gong, NTDTV, Epoch Times, VOA Chinese network and so on. China is an Internet extremely closed country, all foreigners in China must use VPN to access the real Internet.

One reason vpns are being blocked is because it is an indirect way to discourage foreign Immigrants from staying long term. I used to teach in China. I have a chinese friend who is friends with a chinese business person who has some ties with top level provincial officials in Zhejiang. He was having coffee once with both of them and he was telling them about a situation where a foreigner highly qualified to teach there had all his paperwork, degree, and everything that he needed to teach there legally. He was applying for his work permit and invitation letter that he needed to apply for a z visa. The foreign expert bureau kept on prolonging everything. Asking for one thing at a time two or three weeks later. The chinese official told my friend they are doing this intentionally. While they do kick out people with illegal visas, they also find aubtle ways to make the process harder for those who ARE qualified. It's to discourage them from coming. Then my friend asked about the issue with vpn's. The government official told him that they know too well that foreigners need vpn's for things like facebook and if foreigners cannot access what they need, many of js will be more likely to leave in a shorter amount of time. It is also why the government is trying to use it's propoganda to paint an evil image on us. Discrimination and social segregation are also why many of us leave after just one year. They will not slam the doors shut on us completely. But they are slowly rooting out foreign english teachers and other various types of foreign Immigrant expats. There will always be the odd few of js there in the long rin, but those of us who are there are going to be very few. The government official told my friend that they do not want foreigners becoming a larger minority that is noticed. That is only one of the reasons. In general they do not want too many of us living in china long term because then we all find ways to improvise around the discrimination and isolation we face. This government official was telling my friend all this.

Lots of Chinese Friends? To a degree you will meet some good locals which can lead to a very long term and pleasant friendship. People like that are the reason I tolerated China for so long. There are odd good things about China. But no matter who you are or how long you stay, at some point you will leave. You will never forsee yourself living in China for... let's say 25 years. If you plan on making lots of friends, it's all well and good. But you will find that most friendly people you meet will only take you out to dinner maybe once and they won't have anything to do with you again. I had that happen lots. You will stick out like a sore thumb and people take notice of everything you do. Once you realize it, the fact that even just kicking an empty beer can could get the gossip going in your neighborhood. You will one day leave by your own discretion. While the odd Chinese here and there are easy to developers true friendships with, those people are still very few, and far between. If you cannot be alone for too long (which you will) you will feel horrible, homesickness within the first year. Especially if you live in a rural remote area.

No +ADChina you misunderstood VPNs and why they can block it, so lemme explain a bit. Traditional VPNs (PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN) basically shouts "I'm a VPN" by the nature of their protocol, so it's actually quite easy to detect a VPN connection and break the link. But more advanced protocols like Shadowsocks and ShadowsocksR applied various techniques to make the connection seem normal among all the traffic, so it's nearly impossible to detect a Shadowsocks connection, thus shadowsocks and such are going to live as long as there's no vulnerabilities found in it's protocol, and if the gov doesn't implement a "whitelist" to by default block all foreign connections.

I have 6 private VPS servers running Shadowsocks server. two Raspberry Pi units one in my companies NY office, and one in my UK home. Hopping around the globe when traffic speeds changes with a mouse click, makes VPNs look shit. if people paying for a VPN then these days had been numbered now for 2 years which government blocking the outbound data once found. Totally agree with protocols, port and networking is something for the clever people to understand not bloggers. C-Milk has three VPNs complete waste of money.

This is something I am very interested in, because of my plans for the future. As far as I can tell, the government isn't trying to alienate foreigners. They just don't care about them. I'm not sure they fully appreciate the impact this could have on their economy. I don't think it will succeed, because there will always someone who needs a VPN, which then requires an exemption, which then allows for abuse.

It's getting a bit ridiculous. In the last week I've seen two of my VPN providers vanish from the map. Started using a hardware solution which seems to work great, but it's $100USD per month. Thing is, how does the PRC govt expect this to play out? My girlfriend (Chinese) works for a French fashion label in Shanghai, and everyone needs VPN in order to communicate, plan, research, etc. Tons of other locals I know, working in local businesses - the same. And my game studio, which we ran for 10 years in Shanghai, could not have existed if we'd not had functional VPN. So, yeah, if VPNs are completely blocked... expect to see tons of foreign businesses and expats flee... meanwhile, local companies will suffer as a result of not being able to access their foreign clients, keep up with trends, etc.

DavidRsaid and Rebecca Oglesby I seriously doubt China would want a talentless hack. There are literally thousands of native English speakers in China teaching in all levels. If you're a professional, then you would have no problems finding a job at university or foreign owned and operated institution. I've even known half assed educated white Brits living like celebrities simply because they're white and average looking. That's how easy it is to get an English teaching job in China. It's actually harder for highly educated Chinese or other colored skinned, English native speakers to get a job in China due to optics.

Qiyong Chen Well I can only say that their aim to split China can definitely achived by making people like u who can only see thing from the surface believe: Oh China is so bad and the way of the gov doing things r so autocratic. But what had they literally done? Just the action of baning KZbin and Instagram makes it so bad that u make u hate ur country so much? lol Don't forget that there's a also huge number of fake news or other heresy on KZbin. Some of them r even made purposely to make those people (like u)who cannot judge right and wrong gain more hate on ur own motherland. And thats what their real purpose is, to split China, to brainwash those who don't have enough ability to think straight. And I think banning VPN literally doesn't that matter to the majority of Chinese. Most people know how to speak and read English? I guess no. So why the hell the the gov cannot ban it?:)) And my thought is, in short, learn how to take things into consideration in a bigger picture, don't act urself like a three-year-old idiot.I

What most people do not know is that if it is possible to get packets out at all, it is possible to create a VPN. Protocol doesn't matter. method of encryption or encoding doesn't matter. What they can do is attack businesses that provide VPN as a service, and if they are overseas, block them completely. However, a person who has any extra money can get an Amazon EC2 server and setup their own private VPN service, outside the controls of government. To block this method, they would have to totally block all foreign services, period. That is not possible, AFAIK. So, a person with any money and technical expertise can get around this easily. The CCP cannot stop it from happening. They can only stop the ordinary person who doesn't know any of this. Soon, they will be completely done, as Starlink comes online and satellite internet becomes affordable for any lower - middle class person. The writing is on the wall.

Hearing all this one can only conclude: a foreigner must be crazy wanting to live in China. I felt this attraction to China too: a very rich cultural history, excellent food, beautiful ladies... but let's face it: Chinese gov is far from foreigner friendly and welcoming and foreign states should simply start to ban doing any business with China to put Chinese gov under pressure. Because despite looking like a modern country in appearance, let's face it: it's a dictatorial regime, there are no elections and the state wants to control what individuals get to see on the net and even make international marriages as hard as possible. I've dated a Chinese lady once, she was great but all these obstacles have made me come to realize a normal relationship was simply out of the question. Congrats to Chinese gov, they've won, but I'm waiting for the time foreign govs crack down on China. I wonder how long Chinese gov would stay in power if foreign govs decide to put an embargo on China. Go ahead, I would applaud.

Everytime I've gone to China, the second thing that has been more challenging to me after food is that, the Internet blocking of almost any webpage or social network. I mean, with food you sort of have to accept it since you are going to a completely different country and they have their own cuisine... but at night when you are lying in bed and want to relax and just want to browse the web for some news, to see what is going back home or in the rest in the world in the life of your dear ones thruough Facebook, or want to chill whatching whatever video you search on KZbin... well you JUST CAN'T. Of course, China has achieved to create their copies of everything, their own Amazon, Twitter, eBay, Facebook, KZbin, etc... however is bloody chinese and made for Chinese culture and understanding... so even if you understand chinese you are blocked from the rest of the world. You can not even share your expiriences with the rest of the world, have to wait to come back home to upload pictures of the trip, of my expiriences, etc. I just feel is really anoying... that why I can not stay there more than 2 weeks since I start to get crazy, and once I cross the border to Hong Kong the first thing I do is try to connect to see what is going on in the world.

It wouldn't break the internet if China did this. They would either have to pressure companies directly like you said, or simply ban all incoming/outgoing traffic from the external IP's these VPN clients use. A VPN doesn't normally use https (port 443), its usually using ports 943 tcp or UDP 1194, but it can vary. That's just for the tunnel though. DNS is re-routed to the VPN IP's I mentioned earlier. THe point is, you still need to make an outgoing connection to some IP out there that your VPN client uses. If China identifies all IP's VPN's use, it could blacklist them and effectively kill VPN in China. It would be a massive undertaking, and these IP's change so it's implausible, but still possible if they wanted it enough.

As has been said you can select any port for VPN, including 80 and 443. I would guess that the firewall keeps track of the VPN server IP's and blocks any packets going to them, not the ports (Since they do allow some VPNs they cannot ban all VPN packets, which would be possible). I believe Netflix does something similar (Blocking IPs) but in reverse to block access through VPNs.

Xyos212 I remember when I was in highschool and they tried to block all VPNs, and they had the same problem the Chinese government will: They can't block all the VPNs if they don't know all of them. Even if they somehow managed, someone would just start another one.

Correct. I think if they go through with it it will probably be what John Yang said: They whitelist all sites people can use, and everything else gets blanket blacklisted. :(

Many people think a "VPN service" is a "VPN", when in fact they are two different things. A true VPN doesn't require a third party company with real-time access to your traffic.

For the new regulations and restrictions, It's only for the domestic Chinese citizens, as a foreigner there are just so many ways to get the access of VPNs, no even need to mention that foreign mobile data can easily login in foreign sites without being censored.

After traveling for some time to china and never had problems with my vpn. But my last trip changed it all. I bought a local SIM card. China unicorn. Instead of using my work number what cost a shitload to call and use Internet. When using this china sim card i found a hidden app what was almost directly installed on my phone without knowing. (Samsung) After this all me vpn’s was giving problems? some oke, some not. The app was almost impossible to delete, only after rooting the phone. I found out when checking my bank account and got blocked. (When using my other phone with only WiFi I had no problems at all.) So china have stepped up for watching your phone and all the info what is on your phone. Keep up the nice work man.👍 S.

Guys! If this really happens and you plan to leave China, try to come to Russia! Specifically to St. Petersburg! It is a great country on the rise, (i currently live here in St. Petersburg). The Russian culture is also very deep historically as is China, the people are much more tolerant to foreigners and i am sure you will find footage here to share for your channels. I recommend getting a visa for (2 years i think?) and then coming here and sharing your experiences and then move on to another country if you do not wish to stay here. There are many Chinese people here too, I see many tourists and people moving here from China too! Reply to this comment if you wish to chat more about what opportunities there are here, as i can share my experience and wisdoms.

I think you can pay a visit with your wife in Malaysia. You will find Malaysia is the greatest place to stay especially for expat. China to Malaysia is only 6 hours flight. Many china people here and american in Malaysia too. The most important is easily get greencard in malaysia. You will be much more surprise, in Malaysia have a lots more food selection than in china. You can find high quality coffee western food anywhere in Malaysi and also high quality chinese malay indian nyonya and mixed food. Most beautiful clean beach and have the best sea for surfing. Cost of living in Malaysia is much cheaper than China. You can find any beer shop and wine bar here. Our night market is interesting and food are safe to eat every where even in villages. We have chinese medicine hospital to western hospital. Your wife will surely like to live here. Anywhere, just come here. I am waiting your video see what do you think about Malaysia. the only things you don't like is internet is not as fast as China. Transport and payment is not as convenient as China. Thats it. No racist.

The Chinese Ministry of IT has issued this response: "The new regulation issued in January this year won’t affect the domestic and foreign enterprises and the majority of users who legally get access to the internet… The object of the new regulation is those unauthorized enterprises and individuals who haven’t got the licence to use VPNs… As for those foreign trade enterprises and multinational companies who need to get access to cross-border network, they can rent VPNs from those authorized carriers according to the law…"

i've also heard the drinking water from the taps in China is undrinkable , with filth and chemicals in it
@scottsanett
@scottsanett 7 жыл бұрын
There are historical reasons behind it. The Chinese are not used to drinking tap water as they've been boiling hot water long before the common folks in the medieval ages in European countries could afford doing it (and before it became a not-so-common practice). That's why lots of cities in Europe have fountains at city center to boost population growth. Before these fountains existed the common folks died of all kinds of reasons, and many of which can be attributed to water pollution. In China these palatable fountains are not necessary as people boil water before they drink it anyway.
