The tampon scene is when I decided to DNF this one! I was only 1/3 rd into the book at this point and I thought, do I care about these characters and the cringe of the need to be intimate with pee and “the tampon” scene. Your description of the book is spot on and the book is really descriptive (but not sure about honest, being a woman) I was “picking up what the author was putting down” in regards to a woman trying to find herself and being “stuck” in a life she may not want to be in, but the way the author chooses to get that out there, was just my cup of tea.

Great review - agree with your pacing point, I found the first half of the book stronger and was really fascinated to see where it would end up. I really enjoyed it, it was funny, sexy and a bit bonkers which are all things I like in a book. I listened to the audio which is read by July and really got me into it - although I had to stop listening on my commute to work 🌶️😳

Great review! I’ve only ever read two books that discussed perimenopause/menopause in detail: All Fours and Sandwich, and both were published within the last few months. It’s a topic rarely talked about, so while I found All Fours was a bit too weird for my liking, it was a book I appreciated!

I hated it. As a menopausal woman, I didn't relate to much of it. I'm also tired of the trope of the ditzy middle aged woman who is incapable of doing things like driving across country and who lusts after young men or women. Most women I know of my age group are highly competent and practical people (albeit still with desires - but why is that so surprising?), so I feel like this just plays to a stereotype. Like you I found the pacing a bit weird. It wasn't difficult to read but I found it very slow to get through.

Wooof having sally rooney-esque expectations from miranda july set you up for that much of a delightful surprise in the emotional whirlwind of all fours. It’s funny to me hearing all the details in this book because i only vaguely recall them and instead what remains of my reading experience is feeling sad annoyed grumpy horny silly aching yearning but above all admiring how resilient the mc is and how surprised i felt in the strength of my advocacy for her. It’s one of my favorite books i read this year, riding on all fours on pure emotional adrenaline. Also lol excellent thumbnail!

I didn’t enjoy this book. I found the protagonist just selfish and whiny and you just get the impression from the very beginning that no matter what, she’s never going to be satisfied. Plus all her decisions from the get go seemed off the wall crazy.
