Ashley, I've spent the last two weeks cycling in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, The experience is totally different to the UK. Mostly routes have been away from traffic but, where road riding was necessary, there was courtesy and sensible driving from drivers. I have counted one close pass so far and that was in Austria. Matt's cycling sensibilities match my own because he is keeping himself safe and avoiding unnecessary confrontation. He is an example to us all.

What I like about Matt's cycling is you can see it's not just reactive, it's proactively figuring out what's going to happen. Always a few steps ahead. I think this should be taught in schools, learning to anticipate problems before they arise. Dealing with stressful situations in a calm and considered manner. It wouldn't be such a surprise to see cyclist of Matt's level if we taught those principles early on. But no, it's all about rushing pupils to be ready for exams. Anyway, I'll pop off my soapbox.

It is good to be reminded that not all cyclists are belligerent and self-righteous or oblivious and ignorant ;^) I commuted Essex to central London daily for years on a motorcycle and from that experience in almost every situation where Matt is careful and considerate I would expect a cyclist to just push through. I particularly loved that last clip. Well avoided. I think a lot of Matt's brilliant cycling in this video is partly down to not being in a rush. He approached the roundabout in a stagger because he wasn't rushing to use the opportunity to overtake. Because he wasn't in a hurry, he could prioritise safety over gaining a few seconds. It does seem then that much of road safety is influenced by our time keeping skills off the road, and our patience.

Folks just a tip if you are renewing your UK drivers licence. Rather fittingly, I was in the process of trying to renew mine online right now just when Ashley's video came in. And yes, I realise this is Ashley's cycling channel. I will later post this on his driving channel when a new video comes in. I went through all the steps of inputting all my information, drivers licence details, UK passport etc and at the end got a message that they cannot identify me and that I have to renew my licence via post using form D1. I tried using both my middle name as well as without, same issue. So I engaged in a Live Chat with an agent. They asked for my details and told me they couldn't see anything that would prevent me from applying online. However, it then transpired that the issue is that my UK drivers licence doesn't have my middle name whereas my UK passport does. So I'm now going to have to obtain form D1 (not readily available online, you have to order it or get it from a participating post office), fill it in, get a UK photo etc etc. Also to note, the fee for applying via post is higher than online, even though it's through no fault of your own. Of course, the process takes longer too and is not as convenient as online. Just thought I'd let everyone know this and to check if your passport name differs in any way to your drivers licence name. If so, you will have to apply via paper form D1 and it is not downloadable, you have to request it. So please allow more time to renew your drivers licence. Do a dry run and check early! UPDATE: I searched for "Downloadable D1 form for drivers licence" and it is available as a fillable and downloadable form. You'll still have to submit via post and get a photo done. Fortunately my current licence is valid till November 11th 2024 so I still have some time.

@@igotes Lucky you that your names match. I'd still recommend doing a "dry run" without actually renewing - sooner rather than later just to see if you would encounter any issues when you do actually renew. I realise of course you don't want to renew "too early", in order not to lose out on current licence validity. Quite a coincidence that both our licences expire on the same day! Curious to ask if you got a renewal reminder in the post and if so when? Mine arrived today (one day prior to my birthday) though I was already well aware.

In the UK, do you have to give way to pedestrians at a roundabout with NO pedestrian crossing? Great work from Matt! The pure road etiquette is wonderful. Also showcasing low-risk defensive techniques and just all round appropriate road use, especially not getting up the side of other vehicles... "The lights on his bike are brilliant." (Was the pun intended, I wonder?) Yes, and the most brilliant thing about that super-bright forward-facing white light is *_it's not strobing!!!_* That's one of my worst bugbears: I always want to shout at cyclists today *_"stop strobing -- it's illegal for a reason!"_* Always hazardously distracting at night, when that bright light flashes on and off so contrastingly that it is irresistibly attention-grabbing, because I can't tell what it is or where it is or even if it's moving (as opposed to a warning lamp on a roadside skip or bit of scaffolding)... I never realized just how dangerous are those illegally-set super-brights until one night I found 100% of my attention drawn to one on the footpath on the opposite side of a dual carriageway in town and as I struggled to identify if it was a hazard to me, I didn't notice I'd drifted from the nearside across lane 2 and was heading for the central barrier before I came to my senses! Years ago, bike lights in Halfords that introduced a blinking mode had warnings on the packaging that the strobe mode is illegal when mounted to a bike or other vehicle. It seems that manufacturers don't do this anymore and modern cyclists are therefore unaware? Is this true?

I've been a road cyclist for 40 years, I've raced throughout that time, I've been driving for nearly 40 years and I'm a retired police area car driver. I believe drivers had more patience when most of the country had realistic 60mph limits. It appears to me that now most of the country's roads have lowered speed limits, everyone is in more of a rush to do they journeys they need to... meaning more impatience. A journey that used to take say 2hrs in the late 90s now takes around 3 to 3 1/2 hrs. People are simply rushing everywhere to get places because their progress is being slowed by ever reducing speed limits. 20mph outside school is fine, but 50mph for mile after mile of rural A roads is questionable at best. It also causes rash overtakes when people don't want to stick to the limit. A48 in Gloucestershire is one fine example.

I wish more cyclists were like this and not entitled and aggressive morons. I'm sure it's the minority but they don't half make a fuss. To be extra picky, I think on that roundabout clip going on at 4:40 that I'd have increased the gap a little bit more quickly when exiting the roundabout. The driver has already shown they're either lost or a bit cack handed behind the wheel and I was pressing my imaginary brake a bit (not that it works that way on a bicycle!). My reason for this is because I felt it was possible that they could've realised they've taken the wrong exit again and stopped suddenly to think about how to correct it. Obviously, I realise this isn't the right thing for the driver to do but I've come to expect that from many drivers these days. Otherwise, this is some excellent riding. Can we have some more of it shown please?

I disagree with close passes being ineveitatble on a bicycle. When cycling I have mirrors and constabtly watching the traffic behind. I am genrally imnpressed with the restraint car drivers show. I now ride recumbent tricycles and the restraint and space left is even greater. ASwell as bicycles and tricycles, I have riden a few thousand miles on the road on a mobilility scooter, the care car drivers show is excellent. I have reported car drivers but these are just a few rotten apples in a barrel of thousands. Whilst riding i feel in no danger atall from car drivers, being fully aware what they doing or about to do and dont even bother wearing a helmet anymore.

I read an article about how cyclists need to take tests due to their inability to ride on the roads properly. They never consider that car drivers just have no road sense.
@wibbley1
@wibbley1 Ай бұрын
@roalbiscuits8442 And that is exactly the problem. 99.999% of bikeys ride like complete morons, delegating their personal safety to everyone but themselves, i.e the drivers with no road sense. If bike riders had to undertake compulsory road training before being allowed on the road, roadcraft, as Matt demonstrates, could be taught to them. They could also be taught that riding in an entitled, arrogant, selfish way, just perpetuates the hate other road users have towards them. I have avoided so many collisions that were 'the other person's fault' by driving & riding safely, not putting myself into harms way, by squeezing through gaps, for example, or filtering too fast & not looking for other road users that may cross my path. Green traffic light means 'You may proceed if it is safe to do so'. Many a T-bone I have avoided, by looking right & left at all junctions before crossing them. But alas, as Ash has found, by far the majority of bikeys just carry on with their entitled arrogant attitude, refusing to accept simple safety measures like tuition, wearing hi-viz or slowing down a bit when filtering, might be a good idea. Or indeed, listen to Ash's sage advise on how to ride on the roads safely.

I see these haphazardly lane changes and erratic movements now mostly from sat nav drivers. And often in a slow motion type time delay, you can literally see how long it takes for signal to arrive, show on screen and human than to react- usually late . Seems the .minority knows where they are going. The more the eletronic aids get used, the more the memory fades away.

The issue with the "never get sideswiped if you're not alongside another vehicle" statement is that it's a platitude, and the opposite is also true: "you'll never get rear ended if you're not in front of another vehicle." There is no safe place, you simply choose between two potential collisions.

@MattCantor21 Ай бұрын
@@andrewthomas2406 to say the vehicle wasn’t close isn’t accurate. The average uk road lane is 3m, that Nissan Patrol 4x4 is around 1.8m wide. So that gives a remaining 1.2m space in the lane, my wheel is around 0.5m from the curb and the handlebars on my MTB sticks out 0.3m from the centre of my wheel. How much space is remaining between the edge of my handlebar and the vehicle? Certainly not 1.5m that the Highway Code says. The camera wide angle distortion makes things appear further away than it actually is.

You can see the nearside wheels are to the left of the arrow in the middle of the road, certainly not the advice of giving as much space as a car which translates to using the opposite lane. As for being held up, what is so important to get to that means risking the life of another person? A red light? The back of a queue? The next junction? The overall time “lost” due to cyclists in front is negligible

So you can't overtake cyclists is that what you are trying to say??? You don't need 5 meters. We dont give pedestrians that space on the pavement so why cyclists. If your cycling is so bad you could swerve then you shouldnt be cycling.

The normal advice is to give as much space (or at least nearly as much) as you would to a car. I don't understand your comment about pavements, motor vehicles aren't usually allowed there. I'm not that bothered about close passes myself, though I'd rather they wouldn't. It's not too hard to pass a bicycle when it's safe to do so, whilst leaving plenty of space.
