The queue is usually about 250 metres or more to join the roundabout during rush hour, so large vehicle drivers don't even get a chance to straddle lanes, which is the usual technique to get round tight corners properly. @AnthonyOBHD3 ай бұрын
Because backing off could cause a knock on effect behind him, braking or slowing down using engine braking could cause an accident, especially on a motorway
@M0odez3 ай бұрын
@@AnthonyOBHD Woooow ok so let's run through the scenario: At 5:30 we can see that the van is going to be merging and that our speeds aren't matching so there is a potntial problem. At 5:44 we are fully alongside the van with no escape route for either driver. That's 14 seconds we had to adjust our speed. Let's see how it could have been done At 5:30 we see the risk. A quick mirror check to the right to see if we can move out to make their merge easier tells us we can't because the coach is either pulling up alongside us or already alongside us. So being generous with a slow mirror check, at 5:34 we know we either need to increase or decrease speed to create a gap for the van. Now it looks like we're driving a larger vehicle, so probably the only available option for us is to slow down. We now have 10 whole seconds to shave off maybe 4-5 mph to avoid catching the van and if possible grow the space (that still exists) a little bit. We lightly touch the brakes just to trigger the lights, indicating to drivers behind that we are slowing down to allow the van in front of us, and proceed to shave off 1mph every two seconds (or even less if we had the mental capacity to make this decision more quickly than 4 whole seconds). That's such a slow rate, we just have to adjust our throttle slightly; nowhere near engine braking or any kind of rate that poses a risk to drivers behind us. The van safely merges in front of us. The gap is probably a little tight, as it often is with cars merging in at junctions, so we continue to gradually grow the gap and if the van driver continues to hold a slower speed, begin checking our mirrors to evaluate whether we can overtake. It's really not that hard.

1:56 Not just roundabouts, but any junction, as I know having been rear ended at a T junction on a bend. Driver behind accepted full responsibility, without the need for dashcams or mobile phones back in the day when they were only phones c 1980's!

That manoeuvre of indicating, pulling straight in and then hitting the brakes is a common occurrence. The driver is going so fast to overtake , dives in and then realises he is going to re end the vehicle in front , so in turn hits the brakes. Everyday driving i am afraid.

6:07 I have a genuine question. Please help me out. The HWC says you (in general) should not cross a solid white line. In this case, the 'smart motorway' there is a solid white line between lane 1 an 2. Where lane 1 used to be the hard shoulder. Should you be crossing the solid white line? In this case leading to an accident. I genuinely do know the answer. Anyone!
@davem92043 ай бұрын
I think the solid white line in this case isn't really a solid line anymore, as the hard should is now being used as a live lane. It you couldn't cross it, nobody would be able to leave the motorway, or get into lanes 2-4 when joining. I think using a hard-shoulder is a terrible idea, and there seems to be so many clips in these dash-cam channels of incidents in them. As soon as drivers aren't quite sure of whether a lane is live or not, or whether a line can be crossed, then it opens up all sorts of problems.

Annoying as it may be, I'd say it's clearly the dashcammers responsibility to deal with the driver at 2:30. They have plenty of warning that the driver might turn out...

2:46 - the clip is edited so we don't see the light change, but commentary is added to tell us that the car "was passing the light when it changed". So the car was still rolling, going through the light as it turned amber, with nothing in front of him to slow him down. But at the same time, unable to get though the intersection ahead of the other traffic - which was from a standing start, seconds later as their own light changed green.? I don't buy it.

The threat of points and a fine still isn't working as people think they won't be caught. Videos like this show that maybe you will. If there is clear evidence on video then the driver could be prosecuted. If this clip makes one person think better of picking up their phone then it's done it's job.
