I am confused with the videos on the topic - a coin has a completely different value when considered a numismatic collectable. The scarcity, wear etc...And that's not something a 'stacker' cares about, or should care about - gold is gold. The cheaper the better

@@ytfeelslikenorthkorea So what makes you think you are confused?

Superb coin, since I am a new collector I haven’t a clue but thanks for the Marsh comments. On holiday in the north of Scotland photographing some wild life but will be getting amazon to send me a copy ASAP.

Only "just" started stacking. I have no confidence in buying in eBay, any advice for buying on eBay? Have you been stung off eBay?
@harryzero15669 ай бұрын
I have, paying the return shipping and getting my currency back was a lesson worth paying for. However, check for % approval and track record, some sellers have retail outlets too. If the retail outlet is within a reasonable distance, go and pick up and start your networking activity. You build up trust for two way trading and ebay trading platform becomes just a point of reference.

Years are something I am going to start looking at a bit more, although not the rarer ones yet. I started with wanting one from each of the decades the Shields were produced and have obtained that apart from one from the 1830s which is going to be expensive. I then moved onto to wanting one a hundred years older than me which I received last week. Where do I go from here, I'm not quite sure and that is the wonderful thing about collecting sovereigns!

You never quite finish and there always more variations to collect in dates heads errors etc.

I can never be sure with raw coins so now I tend to only buy slabbed sovereigns that are graded at least MS63. Far more expensive doing it this way but it means I won't have to worry about getting back a 'details' coin or a sub-63 coin.
@Numistacker7 жыл бұрын
Understandable but not as much fun. 63 and greater Shield backs are huge prices

Crown Collector buy the coin not the holder !
@heavyt57027 жыл бұрын
Crown Collector, thanks for your input but I can decide for myself whether or not "coin collecting is for me"! Yes, there's always a chance of getting a fake but you're far more likely to get a fake as a raw coin than in a slab.

Crown Collector, there's an old saying that goes something like "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". Please bear that in mind.

Got a st george sovereign ring with a shield with a cross and two lions on the reverse side
@harryzero15669 ай бұрын
2 lions and shield? Check to see if they are actually a lion and a unicorn. Also, St Goerge side and Shield with lions? No Monarch portrait? How many sides does your coin have?
@harryzero15669 ай бұрын
Im not holding much hope of finding an 1859, or any shield back 1881 or later at reasonable price. Im expecting more chance of getting 1983 to 1993 which were only minted in proof. In fact, if I can't get a missing date or an exceptionally nice example of a sovereign that i already have, a 1/4oz britannia or Queens Beasts will do just as well.

I really do like the shield sovereigns. Do they ever use the design on modern coins? I wonder if they will ever issue anymore?

Marsh is very good, but not always perfect. I could choose between 1917 Perth and 1917 Melbourne. Both were called "Scarce", but the Melbourne coin is scarcer than the Perth one. 1891 London Jubilee head long tail is called R3, but in reality it can be bought everywhere only a bit above spot. In my opinion it isn't even scarce at all (short tail is another story). Looking at the video: the 1882 Melbourne shield is a very nice coin; little wear, traces of luster. I would like to have such coins.

1859 Sovereign ,I wouldn't call AU at all. With very conservative grading this coin should be about EF, there is lot bag marks or scratches as well not mentioning that amount of wear on Victoria's hair is more than visible. Reverse is showing details for aUNC and there is some luster. Also seller did very sloppy job about packaging, just to wrap in the paper is not very good idea, at least should be in plastic pocket. 1882M sovereign has considerable amount of bag marks on obverse, coins with much less bag marks returned to me from NGC or PCGS with MS63 so I would think this one is maybe MS60 to 62. No matter what nice coins anyway.
