I just purchased a 1843 Victoria shield back Sovereign, because it was minted the same year as the publication of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. I wanted to hold in my hand the same coin given to young Ebenezer Scrooge as a Christmas gift by Mr. Fezziwig.

Numistaker another piece of information for you. The New south wales Sovereign with the wreath and Australia on reverse 1866 to 1870 contained silver instead of copper on some, others contained copper. An argument broke out between the Sydney and Melbourne mints, during Victorian day's where the Melbourne mint said, their sovereigns were better then Sydney mint ones. When PYX tests were done, authorised by the Royal mint on Melbourne and Sydney mint, it was found that in fact the Sydney mint Sovereigns were slightly better then Melbourne Sovereigns, So New south wales won the argument. Some old head Sydney mint Sovereigns are also very yellow in color due to silver being used instead of copper. Also some George V 1911 half Sovereigns are also very brass, color due to silver used by the Royal mint instead of copper. Hope you find this of interest.

You like the flips better than the capsules? I hate the flips , just because it's harder to stack the flips rather than being in the capsules! Yes the cost is the only the only down fall of collecting the gold sovereigns. Saving for a sovereign, is a gr8 way for building a collection though! Collecting gold sovereigns is a good way to build for a savings plan, it teaches you patience! Especially if you don't have a lot of money, because you have to wait and plan out your strategy for buying them! Thx for sharing my friend. Have a good one & I look forward to the next show, shawn!

I think the comment about using the Saflip is to do with sending them for grading. I know PCGS prefer coins to be sent in Saflips as there is no PVC content. Also if a Capsule shatters in transit , the sharp edges can scratch a coin - I've seen it happen.

I myself believe in several school of thoughts in collecting sovereigns and halfsovereigns. I tend to do what the Victoria Museum does in Australia. And that is hunt for the coin you want, if the Sovereign has not been cleaned, used in Jewelry or has big damage, and is not easy to find, I would buy it. I would be happy for example buying an old head sovereign in VF if the coin was difficult, for example the 1899 perth or the 1893 Sydney New south wales or the 1893 Melbourne mint. To buy these dates in BU today will cost an arm and a leg, not also forgetting the 1896 Sydney New south wales and the 1901 London mint, The rest of the old head dates, I would only go for Good EF to BU being common. The same goes for all other dates, but one now has to understand that top grade pieces are now getting very hard to find, and will cost an arm and a leg to buy, so be happy just to have a nice looking coin.

For someone who is looking to buy there first sovereign do you have any recommendations of which one to get and where from? Purely as an investment. Max budget per coin would be £1000 but around the £500 mark would be more achievable to build on month on month

I've bought a few because the premiums are low and the fractional sizes require less cash outlay. I'll buy a few more, but I'm concerned how well known they'll be here in the States after the dollar collapse (I buy primarily as a hedge against the dollar crash). More modern coins include the gold purity and amount (1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1 g, 2 g etc) right on the coin, where as the European sovereigns do not. My guess is the more modern ones will likely be more readily accepted for these reasons... but diversification is still important. 😁😁😁

After over 20 transactions, I abandoned my Blackpool go to supplier for an unsatisfactory resolution to an in house grading, Then I went for a Hatton Gardens one, which somewhat irritates me for having low price product that is not available. Now I purchase more face to face, finding mutual respect for each others position. Whats so special about ' Pre 1933'?

I have seen lots of collectors and read lots over the last few years. I believe that for many collectors expenditure is a kind of alternative to other forms of saving. I know that applies to me and I believe it applies equally to others. Numistacker, I thought you might like to know the following information. Are you aware that the 1872 Melbourne Sovereign which is rare, the 2 is over 1. The bottom Horizontal line of the 2 has a vertical 1 indicating an attempt to overdate. A man called Julius Hogarth was employed in 1872 to prepare dies locally in case problems arose with getting dies from the Royal mint. He also modified unused dies, bearing the date 1871 to read 1872- in this case somewhat unsuccessfully as the original date can still be seen. Hope you find this information interesting.

@@Numistacker I cannot say that I saw an 1872 M in the pieces shown. I will watch again, maybe its in your part 2. I have all these pieces in unc, I have all the Melbourne pieces in unc, most were exported to India sadly for bullion. And many were melted, which explains why they have become rare. Many New south wales pieces also ended up in India, and sadly many were melted.

I cannot see the point of this grading unless you have the mindset of a stamp collector. I recently bought a shield back Victoria sovereign in nice condition from a pawn shop, it was included within a very ornate 9ct gold ring setting. The coin is 1872 and Victoria still has her hair bands, even so would I send it off to be graded and add a further cost? Probably not. I did pay what I consider over the odds, a little under £500 (including the ring mount). I do have a quiet whinge to myself for not getting 2 more bog QE2 standard sovs for the same money, still a very informative and interesting presentation.
@Numistacker
@Numistacker 6 жыл бұрын
harryzero 156 please don’t send it in for grading as it will come back details - used in jewellery and you would waste your money. Not every coin has to be graded. Grading was introduced to bring consistency, agreed standards, a platform for sight unseen trading. It has proved to be extremely popular with many millions of coins being graded however it is not suitable for every coin and it is likely that your particular coin is one of those coins.
@harryzero1566
@harryzero1566 6 жыл бұрын
Numistacker Actually I removed the shield back from the ring and replaced it with a 1966 one in the vain hope that it might bring good fortune to our world cup aspirations, sadly it only had limited effect. However with close magnified examination the Shield back appears not to have suffered from this cavalier abuse of a nice example. Regarding selling sovereigns, I bought enough 10th oz Britannias so that I wouldn't need to sell my sovereigns. All my QE2 sovs are in nice condition with some duplication regarding dates. I would like to get one on each year for HM QE2 reign without going down the proof or numismatic road.

What do you think a gold sovereign should roughly cost?

Turtle Fan : Right now (January 31, 2019) they should cost £237.29 / US $311.20 based on their gold content and the current spot price.

I don't have that budget, and I like the gold Britannia designs better. Are 1/10 th oz gold Britannia's a good coin to collect? I seen a proof 1987 that is NGC graded PR 67 UCam. for $195. It's a large dealer. Is that a good price?

Nice coins! Would you buy 2002, 2005,2012,1989 gold sovereigns in BU or Proof?
@Numistacker
@Numistacker 6 жыл бұрын
1989 is only proof, 2012 I would only buy proof, 2002 and 2005 I have both and both are good. Proof more desirable
