Collectors may be interested to know, that Queen Victoria did not like on personal grounds the Jubilee head type. Shillings after 1888, the bust was fattened by the engraver at the Royal mint to try and make the Queen more happy with the design. The Queen did not like the design, because her crown looked as if it was falling off. Queen Victoria was not happy until 1893 when the veiled head was designed, which she liked. Queen Victoria was only 18 years old when she came to the throne, and the crown of England was to heavy for her to wear, so it was made smaller for her to wear. Victoria like the veiled head best near the end of her life. I have always been of the opinion that she like the veiled head best when she was older, because she was saddened of loosing Albert in 1861, and felt more happier with it, because she grieved much by his death, which affected her for the rest of her life.

Most of the Sydney mint New South wales shield backs, were exported to India, where they remained in their bank vaults, which explains why so many are in nice condition. Friction and bag marks due to being in bags in the vaults.

If you pay more then you get the coin. Will it make the money in future for sure. Some the slabbed ones on ebay sell more in some the dealership. Scored twice this month from just listening to this mans advice. I could make money on the groups if i keep my eye outt still.

Only sovereign design I actively dislike is the newest hi-gloss version, which looks almost like liquid metal. Bought my first (and last) of them unseen from a dealer not long ago. Much prefer the older style yellowish gold, even if the surface is more prone to scratches. The proofs, however, are all gorgeous :-)

The 1871 reverse St George and the Dragon type die, was used from the George 1V 1821 die sovereign. This was also the case with the Sydney and Melbourne die pieces. Most of the shield back Sydney mints were all exported from Sydney to India for payments to our military forces. 1871 to 1884. The reason that so many early sovereigns are such nice condition is because most remained in Banks, and never circulated to the public. Many people in the old days never saw sovereigns, only the people who were well off. The Early Sydney mint sovereign with the word Australia Type 1 1855 and 1856 known as the fillet head being rare both types, were minted as a result of the Australian gold Rush. Type 2 1857 to 1870 excluding 1869 had a different bun head portrait with a bodice in the Queens hair. Type 1 and Type 2 could not be used outside New south Wales, but this was changed in 1868, and in 1871 the ST George and the Dragon type was used to conform with the British sovereigns. The 1871 to 1884 shield back type Sydney mint, were exported from Sydney to India to pay the Military. Hope you all find this interesting.

Excellent Video!! I've become more and more interested in World Gold Coins after watching your vids. I bought a book "Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins" but it has very minimal info on most of the coins because it covers everything. I'm going pick up that gold sovereign book by Micheal Marsh that you referenced, as a better guide. Do you know any good books for French Gold Coins? Thanks!

Numistacker have a look at this 1893 New south wales Sydney mint sovereign. I am wondering if this may be a new die variety as the S on ground reverse is further to the right, instead of being between the 8 and the 9. This sovereign is at the Victoria Museum Australia. There is nothing mentioned about it, as it not been discovered, but I have not found another, and I am wondering if it was a re-cut die reverse. Also notice the leg of the horse almost touches the dragons head, also the cape of St George almost touches the line of the circle. The normal piece has spaces, the 1893m and S are not common and are quit difficult to find. The London mint being very common. I wonder if their are other dates with this S being further to the 9.
