Glad that you touch upon this topic. I have always struggled with the thought of having a content business on KZbin for the next 10 years or so and it's honestly very hard to envision that when things are constantly changing at a rapid pace. With Blogging (used to be) and KZbin I've felt that these are the kind of opportunities that you take advantage of while you still can and make a good chunk of money, then invest that money somewhere more tangible and longer lasting, because you never knew which direction technology can take, the boom of AI is a great example, how it all of the sudden just decimated the blogging industry almost overnight. Would really appreciate if you could make a video on making a "5 year vision for a youtube channel". That will help us gain a lot more clarity and reassurance.

At the same time though it can be frustrating when the numbers feel random or you feel like you create a great video and only a few people watch it, then you create one you feel is "meh" and it gets a lot more clicks 😅

I believe channels have lifecycles. After a while, the algorithm just throws you in the garbage and promotes newer channels. Novelty is something people have always liked.

I agree with this. There are some creators who are able to continue to find new novelty, keeping them relevant. It seems like a difficult thing to do, but it's totally possible.

I'm very pleased you made this video - you touch upon a lot of things rarely discussed. As someone else mentioned in the comments, channels definitely have lifecycles. This one is over 10 years old now, and had a boom period in 2017-2020, then has slowly declined in views ever since. I just want to let people know who may feel that they are in the same position, it's not necessarily you. I have created other NEW channels since which are booming and doing just as well as this one did, but the content is pretty much the same, definitely the same quality, no better no worse. It's just that over a 10 year period, along the way you collect a lot of dead wood, a lot of empty subs (especially from a tutorial or how to channel). There comes a point where to push a video out to over a million subs and a lot of them don't click, KZbin doesn't continue to push your video, whereas with a new channel the fresh subs will be more engaged and more active. This channel still ticks along nicely and I enjoy making content for it, but my advice to any professional creators would be to keep making fresh channels every 3 or 4 years, and have them as back ups ready to go when the main channel starts flagging.

So if KZbin algo follows the audience how come they decided to extra push shorts? At the detriment of long form?????
@ChannelMakers2 ай бұрын
KZbin as a platform has 1 goal....$$$$$. They will try and push people to what will earn them the most money. In the case of shorts they were trying to gain marketshare of the short form content space and so it was important for them to redirect views to shorts. Again, more of a long-term play for $$$$. A lot of times creators and KZbin are aligned in their goals, but not always.

Yep, there is a difference between grueling physical labor and running a Digital Marketing business :) They are both hard in very different ways!
@denalidtx2 ай бұрын
Don't discard "mentally difficult" just because it's not "physically difficult". I've worked in the sun all day, but I've also concentrated on non-physical problems long enough to get fevers and headaches. Neither is easy.
@Dancing_Alone_wRentals2 ай бұрын
@@denalidtx I would agree that neither is easy. Years ago prisoners were given hard labor but that didn't include desk jobs. Even the 13th Amendment references hard labor. Posting videos off your Iphone and worrying that you won't get enough views to make a living.....just isn't going to ever compare. ( Even if the air conditioning in the apartment is on the fritz ).
@denalidtx2 ай бұрын
@@Dancing_Alone_wRentals Ah, I see what's happening here. You're conflating "hard work" with "hard labor" (very different terms). You're also conflating "posting vids off your iphone" with "researching, scripting, sound design, graphic design, editing, and analysis." That's roughly equivalent to saying that repainting a room in my house every now and then is equivalent to painting houses for a living. But you can hold whatever opinion about it that you want. All I'm saying is that you shouldn't minimize someone else's work just because it isn't as physical as yours.
@Dancing_Alone_wRentals2 ай бұрын
But that was my goal@@denalidtx , to minimize people's KZbin productions by comparing them to a farmer watching his crops dry up in a drought, or a welder setting beams five stories in the air. If you have a moment, let's take two steps back to understand why. There are loads of people watching who expect get rich quick results from their channels. If we tell them channels are hard work I don't believe we are helping them. It's okay, it is hard work. It isn't okay, in reality people need to understand two things: One is that timing and luck have loads to do with the entertainment industry. Secondly their efforts are not good enough and not because of the work, but rather the thinking. I wish these people would reflect on their projects and find the flaws, not ease back into a sofa cushion and declare that it was hard work. I want to encourage each of them to keep thinking, to find a way to fit the square peg into the round hole; to be creative. Post script. When these big How To channels lure small channels into their programs I believe they paint an unrealistic picture. Very few channels get monetized to amounts over pizza money. For years I have been watching and never once have I spoken up. I instead poke fun of my own channel for being so awful. However, I admit, I do worry about the anxiety some of these folks are creating. I don't like reading about the waves of depression spreading over healthy people. Sorry so long. Your time is appreciated. * No work was involved in the writing of this post and no horses were used during filming.

I don’t get this video. This is meant to be a case study about once successful channels but not once were there any specific examples. I was expecting more like: “so-and-so channel did this type of content for 8 years, views drop because there is a correlation between this incident or trend but never pivoted to these videos, etc”. So, in the case of Logan Paul, maybe his 5 min videos went out of favour because KZbin changed to favour longer videos or his audience has moved on to a newer creator. or something like that.
