That Nepo vs Fabi game was so stressful. Fabi blundering like there’s no tomorrow under time pressure. Even blundering after time control was reached on move 41. It was incredible defense from Ian. Congrats to Gukesh though. Played like a machine. His rating throughout the tournament was 2850+ or something which was crazy. At just 17, that’s extraordinary stuff.

It was stressful to watch Fabi vs Nepo. I had to step away from the screen a few times -- stepped outside and hoped the tension had resolved by the time I returned. It had not, not until after Turn 83 or so but even then either one of them had a chance to win.

@@aa01blue38 I don't think Gukesh would have beaten Fabi (or any remaining contenders) in a rapid tie break. Anish Giri thought the same as well as others. Playing an entire game with a short time frame is not the same thing as playing the last stages of sharp game with low time. Gukesh usually takes sufficient time to set up the position and forcing lines he is looking for. This would be needed for a World Championship win.

Watched this live, and when the eval bar shot up for White twice, late in the game, not only could Fabi not find the win either time, neither could any of the three commentators, two of them grandmasters. I wouldn't call either missed win a "blunder"...if three masters under zero pressure can't find the winning move, then it's no shame that Fabi also couldn't find it with just a minute on the clock. This was ridiculously exciting to watch live.

Crazy when you think how incredibly Gukesh recovered from disappointment in prague where he was frequently getting worse positions, failing to convert winning ones and even lose. He came all the way to candidates to where he was never severely worse in any games he drew, was better in the game he lost and apart from that abasov game w/white where he missed 4 wins all his won games have been convincing. Even against nakamura today he was outplaying before finally deciding to trade queens. He really has that elite mentality required for an individual to reach the absolute top. Gukesh vs Ding will be very exciting. Everyone only wants one thing now: An inform Ding Liren for the world championship. Otherwise, its just a matter of time b4 my man's gonna fulfill his dreams. Congrats to him and india🎉.

I have learned so much during this tournament about gutting out a draw. Normally draws are boring, but many of the draws in this tournament were inspiring because one of the players had to fight like a lion to achieve the draw after falling behind in the middle game. This culminated in Nepo's achievement today. Against anyone else in the world Fabi would have won, but Nepo just would not give in to defeat -- even though only pride was at stake, since he could not catch Gukesh with a draw. But pride alone drove Nepo on to grasp a draw out of what appeared to be a losing position. And many other games like that in the tournament too. As for me, when I fall behind, I stay behind. Maybe it's time for me to show a braver heart and more fortitude.

@@GeraldM_inNC You don't have to be a chess expert to understand that after a very exhausting tournament, winning a tricky position in time trouble isn't easy. Most of the experts never made it to the candidates, let alone were in Fabi's nerve wrecking spot, so what do they really know? The commentators stated how nervous they were, how must it have felt for Fabi? The guy who had prepared for this moment for months/years, sitting in the spotlight, cameras pointed at him, and no evaluation bar in sight. At that point it's not about chess but Fabi's mental state. As in any spot, you're smarter in hindsight. Usually the experts and journalists make a lot of drama out of it, kind of riding the high horse and acting like smartasses. That often becomes apparent by the statements they make and questions they ask to the athletes. I have the same impression about many chess experts and commentators. I guess the simplest analogy are penalties in football (soccer). In training you'd have no problem scoring most of the times, but in a champions league final, shooting the deciding penalty, is much more difficult. Of course, any player should be able to score a penalty, but depending on the situation and your mental state, it becomes the hardest thing of your life.

It's hard to blame Fabi though. Many of those huge advantages were engine lines that are hard enough to find when you have time on the clock - much less so where Fabi was. Nepo deserves credit for playing all those tricks and putting the ball in his opponent's court. Can't be easy in the situation and with so many pieces still on the board (understandable again since trading increases the likelihood of a draw).

Fabi's 39.Bh7?? was a terrible move, even in time pressure. It was clear even to me (FIDE 1985) that Nepo would suddenly have chances by giving up the exchange. Fabi's 41.Ka1? was not easy to find . . . but he did have the extra 30 minutes at that time and only spent a couple of minutes making this move. I hate to say it, but Caruana choked at the key moments in this game (he later missed a win with the Qe8+, Qe2+ plan).

He was extremely low on time and Bh7 isn't that terrible. It is not objectively best, but white still has the advantage and it could be converted to win. My guess is that he wanted to simplify the position by going into an endgame being up the exchange. Once they reached move 40, he choked hard and that alone shows he does not deserve it. He had the time and blundered.

Good for Gukesh, he played good chess and astonishinhlg achievement at his age. Having said that, the candidates is a bit of a "lottery", the element of luck being in the order of the games and other results. It's a very different game when one has to play against you with white or black, indifferent, looking for a draw or only for a win. And someone is always luckier than others in results and order of a limited set of games that other people played between them.
