gosh thats such an accurate way of portraying it. an immortal game is truly immortal when one rook crashing into the pawn rank sets up a chain of events which cannot be stopped even if black plays to perfection. even the top engines never saw such a move despite being able to calculate 20 moves deep, thats how we say chess can never be a "solved" game.
@ClarkPotter
@ClarkPotter 10 ай бұрын
@spiritchaser8394 Never? It might be weakly solved in our lifetime with conventional computing, or further with quantum computing when you can try all possibilities in parallel simultaneously. We might even be close already to finding forced sequences from the static start position that either player cannot do better than.

My favorite thing about this game, Houdini 1.5a looking 20 moves deep doesn't see the win after Rxf7. Only after way more thought does it figure out that it's crushing. IIRC some other more powerful engines also missed some of Yi's moves in this.

Thank you for the nice review of the game! It's quite funny how the human brain can calculate such positions. I managed to find c4 in like 10 seconds - with the clear idea that it cuts off the king, but obviously it was a cool coincidence as I didn't calculate for more than 3 moves deep. When you play rapid chess (but not blitz), this is your main flow of thoughts: follow patterns or tricks, and hope for the best! One thing that was not mentioned - kudos to Lazaro for such a fierce defence, he played it to the end, trying to pose one problem after another.

Chess is such a genius game, but what makes it so mesmerizing is, for eg, at 7min mark when black king gets checked, any novice playing would literally just pick a square, and carry on, probably put such little thought behind, i mean what difference can it make right? But to these guys, it makes all the difference, if i move here, i'd lose, here: its a draw, here ok i can win. Truly astonishing and somewhat mind boggling. One square can make the such a difference. Just one example of how great this game is and the players who play it at this level.

After Rg8 and Bb6+, when the king moves you don’t go after the queen. This game was never about material. Rather continue with Rf1+. If the king moves to the g-file it’s an easy checkmate and if it goes back then sacrifice the other bishop with Qh3. Qxb6 cannot stop a mate against the queenside pawns on c4 after a few moves

@@michaeltarbet8719 I agree, its probably still losing. But my main point was that Antonio normally says OK, what if you DON'T accept the sacrifice...then briefly analyzes the alternate line to say why its losing. But for some reason here he made it seem like mate in 1 was the only alternative so accepting the sac was forced. He should've just said the only other move would be ..Nf6 but it gives white 2 free pawns and an easily winning position, or something to that effect.

Question: Why must you take the Rook after RxP? Why not N-f6 trapping the Rook and preventing Q-h7? I don't see a winning line for white after this.

The Rook isn't trapped. The Queen can slide over to e6, defending the rook and threatening every discovery on the planet.

That was also my immediate question how to continue after N-f6?

@@UnknownYTNameThatˋs not the question how to defend the Rook. White already lost a Night and after Qe6 comes Kh8 and it's hard to find the right moves to continue the attack.

1) +8.29 (22 ply) 23.Qe6 Kh8 24.Bg5 Rg8 25.Rxf6 Bf8 26.Rf7 Qxg5 27.Qxd7 Qh6 28.Qxb7 g5 29.Qxa6 g4 30.Qxb5 Rg5 31.Qe8 Rg8 32.Qd8 Bg7 33.Qc7 Bf8 34.Ref1 Bg7 35.Rd7 Rf8 36.Rxd6 Basically black will lose a piece, be down few pawns, and have an open king and the attack rages on. It is -8 or worse. It it is hard for us to see, but for the 2 players it is easy, that's why black played Rxf7 instead of Nf6 like you recommended.

@@MadMax-rt1ns Yes, "trapping" the Rook is perhaps imprecise terminology, but after Kh8, White can go with Qh3+ and it may become a three-fold repetition (Qh3-Kg8, Qe6-Kh8, Qh3-Kg8). Otherwise, I think Black survives and being up a Knight, should eventually win.

Why is Wei Yi not considered among the top players. Same thing happened in the recent Tata Steel event. Such a great field of players. No one talked about Wei Yi, even during the event he wasnt leading. Nobody talking about him, and suddenly he won the event.

He used to be considered one of the best prospects of chess, at one point he was the youngest ever GM and still now the youngest ever to reach 2600 and 2700. He was studying for a bachelor degree and stayed away from high level chess for 4-5 years.
