With dull gray scales, bulbous heads, and gnarly buck teeth, tautog aren't winning any beauty contests. But what they lack in looks they make up for in fight and flavor. Joe Cermele has been a member of the Northeast 'tog cult for decades, and breaks down why so many anglers can't wait to close out their saltwater season chasing these oddballs.
In celebration of the last episode of B-Side Fishing Season 1, we're giving you a chance to win the same rods and reels Joe used all season long, but brand spanking new! We know these rigs worked for Joe, and are confident they will do the same for you. Total Value is $1,100. Signup here: bit.ly/3eWZvDc
Signup for our new fishing newsletter and you can watch all four episodes of B-Side Fishing right now: bit.ly/3siAIhI
Fishing can be slow. Podcasts about fishing shouldn’t be. That’s why we created Bent, the unapologetic fishing podcast that moves faster than a tournament bass boat, but doesn’t take itself near as seriously. Give it a listen for more from Joe and the MeatEater Crew: bit.ly/2XX4hck

I live in Southern California, I grew up in Essex County, NJ. Fished a little growing up in Jersey. Big time fisherman now. Anyway, the California equivalent to the Tautog is the California Sheepshead, also a wrasse. Check them out....

As a Canadian I knew next to nothing about Jersey other than that strange show that came out a few years back. Cool to know there's some great fishing there, this episode in particular was a great learning experience about the productivity relative to age for fish

So glad Rinella and the meat eater bois are branching out and making more content. My only criticism for the meat eater guys is there isn't infinite content. I've seen everything yall made at least twice. I literally consume this stuff almost as fast as it comes out. Keep coming up with ideas, and keep giving your cool buddies like these east coast dudes, shows of their own, because I will eat it all up.

Oh yeah. Give me some more of that NE saltwater. Quite simply, this added channel is much appreciated. Fishing for Blackfish/Taug are some of the best fish, IMO, in the world to target. It takes a bit of experience but when they're chewin and you're up for it they give one great fight. And are rifriggindiculous on the plate. Don't over think it. Salt, pep & butter really gets the job done.

The Pacific we have sheepshead wrasse which aren't the same as Atlantic sheepshead. Cold water wrasse are excellent eating but while they taste fine the flesh of tropical wrasse is like pudding. Island girls mix it with flour and then pour it over rice like a fish gravy. Surprisingly fine eating.

Very similar to cunners we catch here in Atlantic Canada. My great-uncles used to fish them commercially. We fish a lot of them off wharves, if we are bored on vacation. They require tiny hooks but they will viciously attack anything. Supposedly very good in chowder, but the ones we catch here are too small to do much with. Occasionally we get big ones while targeting groundfish offshore though.
