That music during the garbage collection sequence is "Also Sprach Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss. It's in the public domain so no rights would be needed.
@spacequesthistorian7 жыл бұрын
I know the tune, but I didn't know it was public domain. Makes me wonder why so many 2001 parodies use a "similar-sounding" tune rather than just the real tune.
@dcroeser7 жыл бұрын
Actually it is possible that it was not in the public domain in the US at the time Space Quest 5 came out. It is in the public domain in many countries now, however. I forget if the US is author's life plus 50 years or 70 years. May be the latter. Rather annoyingly a few years ago the EU moved from 50 to 70 years. I don't know how this affected existing public domain music.
@spacequesthistorian7 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it must have been public domain for them to get away with using it in 1993. Although Sierra were quite terrible with their rights clearances back then. (The whole Energizer Bunny thing springs to mind.)

The Space Quest Collection, Quest for Glory collection, King's Quest Collection, Police Quest Collection, Phantasmagoria 1 and 2, and Gabriel Knight 1,2, and 3 among others. The only one they didn't sell through the deal was Leisure Suit Larry, I believe.
@spacequesthistorian7 жыл бұрын
Probably because the Leisure Suit Larry license ended up in the hands of Codemasters while the rest wound up with Activision. So it was probably an Activision bundle and they couldn't include Larry 'cos they didn't have the rights to it.

The nice thing about the battleship game in Space Quest 5, is that no ships are smaller than 3 squares in size. That means the optimal pattern isn't a checkerboard, but instead two empty spaces between each shot. Much easier. You can still go on diagonals like a checkerboard, but just leave more room.

Remember being very confused by the Sprint product placement when I first played this. PP wasn't unknown, obviously, but had never heard of them, so I figured it was a joke that I wasn't getting, along the lines of Genetix later on in the game.
@spacequesthistorian7 жыл бұрын
I was confused, too, and even today I feel it's kind of cheap. I know it wasn't Dynamix's idea, and they basically had to shove it in there. But the conversation between the guards in the Space Bar brig, which is just one long Sprint commercial in dialogue, is so toe-cringingly bad. Punk spirit this is not.
@richardperspective7 жыл бұрын
It's in Larry 5 as well, of course. Not quite as overt since it just pops up at the end of phonecalls rather than getting prominent placement in locations, etc. But still...

Probably been asked already, but any chance you have a copy of the manual laying around? It is definitely one of the funniest things about Space Quest V and I have fond memories combing over it it from my childhood. Would be cool to go through it in an episode perhaps, if you do. Thanks for taking us through this nostalgic quest, sir.
@spacequesthistorian7 жыл бұрын
Sadly, no, I don't. I never owned a box copy of SQ5. And the manual supplied with the GOG version seems to be from the Space Quest Collection CD, so it doesn't have any of the funny articles and such.

I always though that it was neat to have the co-ordinate system, despite being a form of copy protection. It felt like an advancement of the planetary scan system from SQ 3. Side note, pretty sure that alimentary orifice remark is a star trek 6 reference, where someone tells Kirk that not everyone keeps their genitals in the same place. Side side note, that might be the most epic way to collect trash ever devised.
@spacequesthistorian7 жыл бұрын
I like how it feels like there's a whole galactic quadrant you can go explore, even if there's only a few planets that are actually needed. That feeling of "I could technically go anywhere!" is pretty damn cool. I'm also amazed that an entire planet's worth of trash can fit into one slightly oversized trash bag!

Also sprach Zarathustra was about 100 years old musical piece when this game was made. So obviously there was no problem to use this for the game.
@spacequesthistorian8 күн бұрын
I don't really know what I was thinking. It was already public domain when Kubrick used it in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
@Jukka-PekkaTuominen7 күн бұрын
@spacequesthistorian It seems to a little more difficult than that. I made some research on the matter (while not a lawyer so don't believe everything in here). USA had a long long time a really backward thinking about copyright and they for instant had a requirement that copyrighted works need to apply for a copyright and renew the application at certain times which meant that many old (and especially foreign) pieces were under public domain until the law was changed in 1972. And even the older foreign works were not protected until 1996 (when a lot non-US copyrighted works were moved under protection). So I would guess that Also sprach Zarathustra was not copyrighted (in US) for 2001 and Space Quest IV, but now it is. Strauss died in 1949 so it would be protected for many years still.
@spacequesthistorian7 күн бұрын
Well, Sierra had a long and lurid history of just appropriating popular music, anyway. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" is in King's Quest II, ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man" is in Space Quest I... Hell, even the "d'oh!" sample in this game is lifted straight from The Simpsons.
@Jukka-PekkaTuominen7 күн бұрын
@@spacequesthistorian I think the 1996 change (which is for some reason called "the Uruguay Round Agreements Act") is the reason why you don't hear that music anymore in other shows. But instead some vaguely similar melody. (Of course some people still use the song and they probably just pay for the license. For instant it was used in the movie Zoolander. Or they just don't know the song is copyrighted and make a mistake.)

If you don't go to the place where you intercept the transmission, you'll never get to the Spacebar. You need to visit all three planets before that happens. Yes, it runs the same engine as Freddy Pharkas. Every Sierra adventure game runs in this engine.
