I am 100% convinced that Carroll O Connor and Sherman Hemsley were not only good friends, but they were the BEST of friends. You just can't have that level of chemistry without friendship like that. I've never understood the comparison between Archie and George. Archie was a not-so-bright bigot who was clearly a product of his upbring. George was intelligent and sucessful, yet he some bigoted ways himself (which arguably stemmed from how he was treated prior to his success). Bigotry is wrong regardless of who it is. Thing is, while Archie had no reason for his bigotry, George's bigotry is simply more reactionary than anything else (not meaning it still isn't worng, his is a bit understandable).

It’s more that they’re foils for each other. They have different backgrounds but are both loud curmudgeons It’s not *just* the bigotry part. Plus it’s a great gag. Archie goes off on minorities all the time, then finally meets his mirror image who doesn’t like him for being white.

George wasn't really all that intelligent academically. He never even got to go to high school because he dropped out in junior high so he lacked proper education and it showed sometimes. On The Jeffersons Louise and Florence would take shots at his stupidity on more than one occasion. He's more street smart. And his bigotry and bluster would always get put in its place by Louise, Florence and The Willises the same way Lionel and Mike would put Archie in his place so they're very much alike that way.
