This actually happened! Carroll O'Connor observed Rob Reiner putting on a sock and a shoe and a sock and a shoe, and tried to tell him he was doing it the "wrong" way. The two ended up writing their silly controversy into the show.

The interview (or at least _an_ interview) with Reiner discussing the scene is here kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGjblWWvnJeiqbs While Reiner claims it was "improvised", my guess is while the scene was not part of the show's original script, O'Conner and Reiner wrote the scene together by playing around with some dialog and some ideas, rehearsed it a few times... and _then_ it was filmed.

When I first needed this kind of help, my husband would help me put on my right sock & then my right shoe. Then my left sock & then left shoe. I asked him, "What are you doing?" He said, "I'm putting on your shoes & socks." I said, " I know. But why are you doing it like that?" He said, "Like what?" I replied, " Why are you putting them on sock shoe sock shoe?" He says, " How are you supposed to put them on?" I said, " You put your socks on first & then you put your shoes on." He says, " Who says that you have to do it that way?" I said, "Everybody does it that way." I'll spare you the rest of the conversation. It continued. 🙄 He thought that I was making a big deal about it. I was just asking a question & clarifying the topic. I told him that it was throwing my groove off. I mean that's not how I normally get dressed. It felt funny. I mean he doesn't put his own socks & shoes on that way. So why does he persist on putting mine on that way?? I DON'T LIKE IT. It feels strange. Why can't he just put them on the way that he puts his on? 🤦🏼♀️🤪🤯😩 He won't stop it. I think that it's a way to control something in my life. 🤷🏼♀️. ☮✌🏼

One of my all-time favorite bits from the entire series! I love the way that it's apolitical on the surface, but if you look deeper than that, you can actually interpret it as being *very* political. At face value, it's a dumb little inconsequential disagreement about socks and shoes. But it's also a perfect demonstration of Archie's conservative viewpoint-- he is so fixated on his way of doing things (the 'way it's always been done', or the 'way it's supposed to be done'), that he is completely incapable of thinking laterally about the ways other people (especially the liberal Mike) might want to do things. He's hopelessly devoted to the status quo, even when there are valid reasons for wanting to do things differently. I think about this particular scene often.
