Hi Mike, your analysis omits two essential elements to understanding 'Israel' and her future in Romans 9-11. 1. Rom 9:6. 'Not all Israel are Israel.' ie not all ethnic Jews are the remnant, true Israel. Understanding this impacts your interpretation of the rest of this section. Pual explicitly spells this out in 9:8. 2. Rom 11:1-2. Paul explicitly states that the fact he is a Christian is proof that God has not rejected ethnic Israel. This argument by Paul satisfies his later comment wrt ethnic Israel, 'God's call is irrevocable.' These points of Paul must be properly weighted to understand what Paul means by Rom 11:26 , 'All Israel will be saved.'

Dr Mike Bird, what is your view on Jason A. Staples' works such as 'The Idea of Israel in Second Temple Judaism: A New Theory of People, Exile, and Israelite Identity' - 2022 and 'Paul and the Resurrection of Israel: Jews, Former Gentiles, Israelites' 2023? Haven't read them but heard good things on his work. Would love to hear your views on his work!

Dr Staples work was incredibly insightful and brought about great coherence. It is a good argument against what Dr Bird says here...if you like podcasts, the OnScript podcast recently interview Staples in 2 parts. It is also not the same as NT Wright, which Dr Bird references here. Dr Staples offers a very helpful "third way"

Was literally going to ask this same question. I think Staples’s book changes everything.

Hi Mike, I have just got a copy of your Story of God Commentary on Romans, in Logos and I’m loving it. I am reading it straight through and getting so much out of it. I have lots of commentaries on Romans, but have only ever read one other commentary straight through, and that was Gordon Fee’s Revelation. I need to sit down with you and Tom and sort out this all Israel business 😉

What do you think of Jason A Staples take on this? Paul and the Resurrection of Israel. He suggests (based on podcasts, the books too expensive and too big for me to read ;o) that Paul sees Israel as all 12 tribes and the 10 northern tribes have been given over to the Gentiles.

I really liked Dr Staples books, I bought and read all of them :) would love to hear Dr Bird's thoughts on Jason's views.

1 Timothy 4:9-11 KJVS This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. [10] For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. [11] These things command and teach. All men will be saved just like all Israel will be saved, it just becomes a matter of when 1 Timothy 2:3-6 KJVS For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; [4] Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. [5] For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; [6] Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

You fail to see the big picture of Paul’s long argument. It has “now and not yet” statements. Verse 26 means what is says - all Israel will ultimately be saved and than Paul goes further in verse 32 that God’s mercy extends to the entirety of humanity. Paul taught Ultimate Reconciliation in many places including earlier in Romans - 5:18-19.

It’s very obvious people are picking and choosing (out of context )what they want to take literal.

Romans 9:6-8 KJVS Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: [7] Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. [8] That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. It is necessary to read and study the fourth chapter of the book of Galatians to properly understand the above verses. There are two covenants, covenant of the law and covenant of promise. Galatians 4:21-26,28 KJVS Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? [22] For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. [23] But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. [24] Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. [25] For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. [26] But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. [28] Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. If you’re with me so far, let’s back up a chapter. Galatians 3:14,16,18,29 KJVS That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. [16] Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. [18] For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. [29] And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Long before I understood the above verses, I noticed what apostle Peter wrote to his countrymen, who were Christians in his first epistle. In the 11th chapter of Romans, all Israel will be saved. I believe refers to Israel of the flesh. 1 Peter 2:9-10 KJVS But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: [10] Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
