The pianist you are watching is Hiromi Uehara from Japan. She plays her own style, which consists of jazz, blues, fusion, pop and rock. This video of her playing "I Got Rhythm" is actually more of a tribute to it's composer George Gershwin than it is to Oscar. I know she knew Oscar, and I would think he would be proud of her treatment of this classic. I've heard her play this arrangement in live performance many times. As a showy tune which struts her monstrous technique, this music serves her wow factor more than it demonstrates artistic compositional merit. But then again, if you got it (chops / technique) ......flaunt it. That's what people pay to see, and she always delivers !

The tittle is suggesting me emptily to watch something I don't know very much about, but I'm pianist. I must recognize that this is one of the best JAZZ AND LATIN JAZZ/FUSION piano players and performers in the world, and scrolling between the comments below, I read someone to say that singing and playing piano well is harder than this, when its one of the most basic things you learn as musician, not like one amateur uppity self-claimed "musician" of the new wave, honestly many have said also "it's easy to play" well yes it is, if you play it like on 40 bpm, because I doubt entirely the ones who have commented have such discipline which developed certain skill to play at that tempo. Hiromi Uehara is one great pianist, and she has merit over it, not over criticizing other better pianists/musicians than her, but for studying piano like since she was 3 years old.

Those interested in Jazz may be interested in my jazz piano blog. I discuss speed not being everything, along with other philosophical articles. I do feel the title is useful rather than misleading because all pianists 'should' watch this video; it will make them realise that there is not 'correct' way to play the piano. Some enjoy speed and dexterity, others enjoy musicality. This video/performer is very good at highlighting such a difference.
Say what you want. What you can't deny is that this is a performance - and a phenomenal one at that. It's delivered with the utmost professionalism, passion and personality.

Her name is Hiromi Uehara. She is the most gifted pianists around IMO. In case you think this is a fluke, check out the "Tom and Jerry Show" song she did. It is equally as amazing! She has also recorded a duet album with Chick Corea where she went head to head with one of the masters, and definitely held her own. Her own CDs are not only technically great, but beautiful as well. Playing acoustic piano is definitely harder than a feather lite synth. The weighted keys take much more finger strength to sound the notes. She is just amazing!! This will either make you want to practice for hours on end, or like Jose said " start selling tacos!" LMAO!

I must say having been a professional pianist myself for a little over 18 yrs or more I really do think that all players weather it be keyboards or a piano should watch this, it really gives everyone a great perspective on what you can become if you practice enough, my teacher always told me practice makes perfect. I really like the different styles that she plays, she plays it with such passion and even if I wasn't a professional at this I would not be so arrogant and negative I would take this knowledge of this young women and approve upon myself, I just really dislike how so many people are so negative why?, why can't you take from this and make it your future, I didn't become a professional in one day or night if you would. I took me I would say nine yrs of very hard work

I'm not a piano player but I am a drummer and what you say is true, if being a musician was easy and an over-night process, then everyone would be a professional. You and I, while we both play different instruments, know that trying to master our instruments can be a tough journey, us musicians put so much time into our craft, it's really crazy. I don't know the physical challenges of a piano player but as a drummer I've had to sweat, bleed, bruise my fingers, get deep cuts on my face from bringing my sticks up to high, get cuts on my fingers from fast cymbal grabbing, I've felt light headed, and I've had my heart race so fast on many occasions where I felt I was going to have a heart attack and drop dead at any second. I always fear I'll a heart attack while playing (it happened to Buddy Rich) but I still play my drums with high intensity, many people look at me thinking it's just a hobby but this is my life, music is my everything. I'd rather leave this world having a heart attack while playing music than laying in a hospital bed or an old folks home waiting to die.

Good tip Raggo, I've just watched them, love Tofu Song. Reminded me a little of Tsushimamire. I find Japanese music so refreshing from Momusu O.G. (Kaori iida) through Maki Goto to Kumi Adachi and Kaori Kobyashi and all the way to the great Kyoji Yamamoto and even Chatmonchi. Is it just youtube or are most top Japanese bands female?. Last time I was in Tokyo I missed Kaori kobyashi by a day. It is so difficult for a westerner who doesn't read kanji to find the clubs.

She [why do some comments suggest female pianists are somehow different?] plays with a highly developed classical technique, applied to jazz. The few negative comments smack of envy. Although very fast, she play with great clarity and assured touch. We may not see from this how she might interpret something slow and serious, but she does play expressively, even in this. A truly remarkable pianist whom I envy in the best possible way. [I have an extensive classical piano background].

Oscar who??? Seriously, this girl is truly amazing. I have been a professional pianist and teacher for over 50 years and I know if anyone can play as well as Oscar Peterson it is Hiromi. I have been aware of her for a while because AccuJazz features many of her tracks on their piano channels. I have just recently started to find out more about her and to listen to more of her music. It is beyond amazing what Hiromi does with her playing, her compositions and her arrangements. She is so versatile, prodigious and accomplished that even Oscar would agree he has met his match! You go, girl!
