Thank you all for watching our video! I've seen quite a few comments that disagree with our point about Superman's identity. While I do hear where you are coming from, I was more referring to how Supes has to take false measures to "blend in" with people. Having a disguise, faking clumsiness and lower intelligence, making sure doctors (and others who might have the opportunity to examine him) don't discover his Kryptonian biology, etc. When he's Superman, he's free to be himself, which IS the farmboy that just wants to help everyone else. He doesn't have to hide his face, his morals, or help in secret.

You know what? I was just typing and linking to a video about how Superman has "four identities" (Metropolis Clark, Superman, Kal El, and Smallville Clark) that's a pretty fair analysis. Superman is, as Clark once called him "A fancy pair of long johns I put on to operate in public without losing my private life" but at the core of that is Smallville Clark, Ma and Pa Kent's blue eyed baby boy who just wants to help people.

It depends on which Age of Superman you're talking about as to who is the real person. Golden Age, Silver Age and Bronze Age Superman, Supes was the real person and Clark the disguise. Supes even mentions disguising himself as Clark Kent and he goofs on Lois because he finds it amusing that she can't see that he's Superman. He had his powers even as a baby so always knew he was different. Post Crisis/Modern Age Superman, Clark is the real person. He got his powers slowly so he was normal old Clark from infancy through middle teenage years. Clark is who he is and Superman is just what he can do. PC/MA Supes had to eventually reconcile within himself that he is NOT Clark Kent and he is NOT Superman, He is Kal El, son of Jor El and Lara, adopted son of Jonathan and Martha Kent who uses the name Clark Kent to have a normal life. He had to accept that the humble farmboy and the altruistic godlike alien were the same being. Up until that time, he had limited his power "level" to something quite a bit more than human or even metahuman, but not out of the realm of possibility for a really strong metahuman. He mentions in his first fight with Doomsday that he wasn't holding back and was giving the fight his all, but just reading the books, it is apparent that he is not using his full power because his full power would have done far, far more damage. Once he embraced his alien nature, he was capable of letting go of his Earth conceptions of time, space, speed, and what was or was not possible. He became capable of resisting time warping effects, reality warping effects, speeds that near rivaled the Flash, moving the Earth on his own, shattering planets, and reality with his punches. Before that, he'd never done any of those things and even mentioned that some things, even HE couldn't do. Which was actually wrong.

But either way, he always felt more in his natural element when he was being Batman. I personally consider Superman to be the Symbol of Hope, not Peace. I believe Superman represents the idea that no matter what situation you are in, there’s always a reason to have hope. Sometimes you have to be saved by Superman, sometimes you have to be Superman. Either way, there’s always a way out. That’s why he became a Blue Lantern (like a Green Lantern, but fueled by hope instead). I also don’t think Superman’s goal is to give the impression that everyone’s safe as long as he’s there. He’s there to inspire people not only to give them hope, but to promote the ideals of Truth, Justice, and the American Way, which normally represents Freedom. The reason why I don’t consider Superman to be a Symbol of Peace is because Freedom and Peace don’t always go hand in hand. Freedom can give us peace just as easily as it can give is violence. Superman doesn’t stand for peace because he understands that violence is a side effect of freedom, but he still considers freedom to be worth the hassle. Also keep in mind that Superman also lives in a world with other heroes. One of the reasons why he joined the Justice League was because he wanted to help them stand for what they believe in. They became Heroes because they believe in doing the right thing, not just because of their superpowers. In reality, Superman is a great leader that pushes everyone to become their best selves. Look at what happened in Flashpoint. There were other changes, but Superman’s absence really messed the world up big time. Without Superman to help push others into their better selves, characters like Aquaman and Wonder Woman basically destroyed the world because of a simple misunderstanding. If Superman was there to help them understand each other better, I’m sure that the world wouldn’t have gone into a third World War. Edit: Decided to make some of my points a little easier to understand. I didn’t change much else.

First Point (Identity): I have to disagree there, regarding All Might. All Might's true self is shown through his All Might Persona. Though the power and presence he exudes may be a mask, his heroic spirit and attitude are not faked. He is his real self to the same extent superman is. Points two and three: Yep, agree. Thought there might be more points of discussion to be honest
@benknightprime6 жыл бұрын
8:07 Couldn't disagree more. There is a comic panel of Superman and Nightwing in a park talking. A cop walks up to them and is relieved to see that it's two heroes. He says the park will be safe with the two of them there, but Superman corrects him that it is safe with the three of them there. Superman does not think he is the only hero of the world or he is the one solely responsible for it, he believes everyone is capable of the same goodness as him. Above all things in this video, I think that was the greatest misrepresentation of who Superman is.

Goliath Pyroson I can agree with this but I think as time passed on super man became his main identity and Clark the double life but at the same it always feels like that to me with all of the dc comics I guess it just how it written but not meant to be that way? Either way though I believe super man became his main life as his power became known as villains try and challenge that power and kill them off so they can achieve their goals so he pretty much doesn’t have the time to Clark as he did before so I think we can agree that as of now he has no time to be Clark kent.

And the reason why I say this if you think about it if you’ve been watching hear academia, and this is already four years. The reason why I’m saying this is because there’s a scene where all my it’s like in Gold, and he can use all the abilities just like Deku, but we never seen it, so he was impossible to know if he actually can beat all might . But don’t get me wrong. I don’t understand the superman thing either sometimes because there’s different comic books in. Gotta say, really liked this vid. I personally don’t agree with everything that was said, but I think the arguments made were pretty solid. My only real question is regarding which Superman is being represented in this video (which has always been a tricky topic to take on), because I’d argue that the Superman from the Pre-Crisis, Animated Universe, Rebirth, and Movies all have varying values and beliefs on what it means to be a hero (DCAU Superman is very kind, more of a team player, and is nerfed enough so that his being on a team is good, but not essential, to solving most problems, while DCEU Superman is more isolated, conflicted, and seems to be able to solve most problems that crop up on his own). As a result I feel like this sort of muddled the argument being made for him, since I feel like some points only applied to some iterations of the characters and others didn’t. That being said though, this was a very nice surprise, and it really gave me some food for thought regarding the values of being a hero. Good job guys, I’m looking forward to your next video, whatever that may be!
@anthonyrodriguez87886 жыл бұрын
Actually DCAU superman was kind of a prick and he always viewed himself as the strongest man in the room no matter how often he was proven wrong and no matter how often the series confirmed there are stronger Hero's (most notably Green Lantern). This flaw made his ability to work with others somehow even worse than Batmans. But other than that I agree that the results of this video are muddled.

“All Might teaches the world to be their own hero” Then what did he tell Izuku about quirkless people being heroes? And don’t say the whole heroes come in many forms like firemen and police officers, in the MHA Universe, a hero is clearly defined as a costume themed person with super powers that is acknowledged by the public. All Might clearly states to Izuku that he can’t be a hero because he doesn’t have a quirk, he doesn’t tell him to work hard and be similar to batman or that there are pro heroes with pretty useless quirks and yet they still perform well. Also All Might practically lost his way in a sense of what a hero should be, someone willing to risk their life for others even if they may not succeed, he allowed his fear of failing as the symbol of peace, willing to let a teenager die while waiting for someone to do the work for him rather than possibly jump in and die or fail as the symbol of peace because he has to keep up the image of being perfect and unbeatable. That’s something I really dislike about All Might, he is so desperate to keep up his image of being unbeatable and the symbol of peace that it gets unhealthy, people are at risk of getting hurt to keep the image up, and not to mention himself, his physical condition is terrible and he is doing all these extra things to hide from everyone that he has his limits, that he is the not the unbeatable symbol of peace that everyone thinks he is. That’s also where the a major problem lies, why does All Might alone have to be the symbol of peace, it’s honestly borderline arrogant, sure he has some of the best intentions in mind but still, he’s made where he has to shoulder all the burdens *alone*, where it is all on *him* alone, and when he gets his injury, he is desperate to hide it to where it’s not healthy; he makes it where if he were to fail then society falls apart, he makes it where everyone relies on him so much that they can’t function without him, the heroes become lax because they know he’ll perform the heavy lifting, and the smart villains hide and wait for him to inevitably fall and disappear so they can come out and destroy everything, he created a very unsustainable system where he has to keep appearances while looking for someone like Deku to dump his burdens on, someone like Deku to have to shoulder every burden All Might had to handle till then. He could have made it where there are multiple people acting as symbols so that if any were to fall then the rest would come and support, in fact *thats* what the Justice League is with Superman choosing not to be the only symbol of hope and peace unlike All Might and instead actually accepting help from others and working with others rather than doing it all by himself unlike All Might so that if he fails or loses then the others will come and help him. I honestly think Superman is better because he does better where All Might has failed, he inspires others to do better, he doesn’t judge of first contact, not deciding to call someone who is probably misunderstood or just looks monstrous a villain like All Might and many others in MHA (that can be very offensive to people like Gang Orca and Shinsou you know), he doesn’t give up even when the odds are really stacked against him and he doesn’t have his powers (All Might’s time runs out and he just stands by and lets a teenager almost get choked to death by a slime villain he could easily destroy with a punch), he doesn’t outright crush people dreams (did anyone else kind of see how it was hypocritical of All Might to crush Izuku’s dreams despite being in like, the exact same position when he was his age, he could have at least gotten to know Izuku longer to see if he was a worthy candidate for his quirk as he was looking for a successor at the time a good candidate was standing right in front of him), and he knows when to ask for help (Even when the Nomu was stabbing it’s fingers into his weak spot, All Might still was against getting some support from students, sure they could get hurt, but he would have died if not for them)

"he's there to protect the people but to also inspire them" so exactly like All might? "As he believes even without super powers, anyone has the potential to be a HERO" All might thinks more realisticly, depending on your description of a hero, not everyone can be a hero. he still decided to beleive in someone with no powers (and All might himself had no powers)

@@mattmaillet1186 the thing is the video made it appear that inspiring people was All Might's thing ignoring that's been Superman thing too. Also while All Might inspired a non powered person like Deku, I think Superman did a more successful job of inspiring non powered heroes (yes Batman was no doubt am inspiration too but usually it's Sups) also I feel that in the DC Universe there isn't that much of divide between powered and non powered customed heroes compared to how the superhero community works in My Hero Academia

This was a well made video but as a lifelong Superman fan, I felt you misunderstood some things about the character when you were analysing him. Firstly, Clark Kent being the mask and Superman the real identity is a false, or outdated description. This may have been the case with the Pre Crisis version of the character but for the Post Crisis version, Clark Kent has been the real persona whereas Superman is the disguise Clark uses to help people. Clark values his humanity and relationships hence why he acts differently in his Clark Kent identity to make the possibility of him being Superman seem unrealistic to people. Clark tends to think himself as Clark Kent first, Superman second in the modern Superman comics. Secondly, it's wrong to say Superman solves all problems himself. It's true Clark prefers to take on a dangerous villain himself to avoid putting others in danger but if Superman really did think like that, he wouldn't work with the Justice League or the Legion of Superheroes. When a threat is too dangerous for him to handle, Superman is more than willing to work with others to defeat it. Lastly, I don't think it's fair to say Superman doesn't have to deal with training a protege like All Might does with Midoriya. Superman has helped guide and mentor younger heroes like Firestorm, Blue Beetle, his clone Superboy and his cousin Supergirl. Plus, in the recent Rebirth comics, Superman has been teaching his son Jonathan on how to control his powers and teaching him how to be a hero so that Jonathan can carry the torch when he gets older. So Superman definitely has experience in passing his knowledge onto the next generation of heroes.

First paragraph, No, just no. We have seen time and time again that clark is his side shit and superman is his main form. He is clark when there is nothing for superman. If he was clark first he would spend as much time being clark as possible than just being superman. For you to make him think that superman is his real persona makes him insanely UNHUMAN. A human would want to be a god as much as possible LOL your right, but you know superman could probably bullshit a win But he rarely has real proteges. The relathionships feel so carboard and repeated. While what all might and midoriya have is special

Another aspect you missed from Superman is that although he can't actually strait up give his powers like Allmight, he doesn't just putt the weight of the world on his shoulders. Although he has a tendency to do so, he is a founding member of the ever growing Justice League of America. As a founding member of the JLA, he helps train others in smaller leagues, along with the long standing line up of Superboys and Supergirl as his sidekicks and prodigies. He even trained his own dog, Krypto, to do so as well. And as for giving his powers to others. In All Star superman, he actually developed an enhancement drug that temporarily makes the subject Kryptonian for 5 minutes. And if he gets electrocuted by the same electricity that someone else is touching, that other person is more then likely to get powers. This is actually why Livewire got electricity based powers. After the first person to get powers from him ended up being one of his most formidable villains, it's not like he'd start giving powers to strangers like Allmight did with Decu on the first day.
@genozp23285 жыл бұрын
Actually, All-Might’s whole purpose to become the symbol of peace IS to shoulder the burden. Yes he wanted to train Deku and watch the next generation surpass the last, but he wanted the people and fellow heroes to know they could count on him. Though he AND Superman both were willing to accept help when they weren’t enough. Both are dedicated and passionate.

I don't really understand the point of the last point given about All Might having to choose a successor. That isn't really an accurate way to compare character because Superman has no way of passing his power onto someone else, like All Might does. Plus... All Might HAS to do this. And saying that "All Might teaches that everyone can be a hero" is kind of misleading because the very first thing he tells Izuku Midoryia when they first meet is, "Without a quirk, I don't think you can be a pro hero, sorry. You can be a police officer though." It isn't until All Might was inspired by Midoryia's bravery that he even decides to pass on his quirk. But the idea of "teaching others to be heroes" only works in a setting like My Hero Academia - where 80% of the population has some form of quirk that can be used to be a super hero. That doesn't really apply at all in Superman's case and isn't really a fair way to compare their character. Plus, Superman does work with others through the Justice League. Yeah, he'll try to do things on his own because of personal responsibility, but he'd NEVER do what he does in the animation from 8:30 onwards suggests and "take over the situation himself." Anyway, other than that, this was an interesting video overall, I just can not at all agree to the conclusion that was made.

I think you are off about Superman, but you explained Allmight exceptional well. I think the biggest reason is because like you pointed out there’s been so many renditions and character arcs that it’s hard to pinpoint exactly but, the biggest thing I personally think you got wrong is Clark Kent puts on the cape.. Not Superman puts on the glasses. What I mean by this is Superman was raised as a human. The majority of his life he had little knowledge of his Kryptonian heritage. He was taught by his adoptive parents his morals and values. He’s also a cool guy. He tries to do the right thing because there’s more then just a obligation. He wants to.

All in all, this was a stellar and informative video, and I find it really cool how the title was set up to think this was was some sort of “who-would-win-a-fight,” but turns out to be an in-depth character analysis of what it means to be a hero. I think it would be really cool if you could do the same thing comparing Deku with another hero protagonist, maybe Ben 10 given this channel’s content (I think one commenter suggested Spider-Man, and I find that interesting as well. Although, I feel Ben 10 might be more appropriate, as again, given this channel, and the fact that both he and Deku hold the title of greatest hero of their world. And in that case, maybe Danny Phantom as well). Also, in regards to the last point, about how All Might works to prepare a future without him which is something Superman doesn’t really do, isn’t setting up a future without him the entire premise of All-Star Superman, which is widely considered to be a quintessential Superman story? And in that story and in further tied-in media, aren’t Superman’s efforts shown to be extremely successful, leading to a future of a prosperous society with heroes expanded across the cosmos? The point being, one it comes down to it, Superman can create a future without him, he just doesn’t have to.

+Jalen: THANK YOU! I never liked when people referred to either Superman or Clark as "one is the secret identity and the other is the true self." That isn't really true in either case. Both Superman AND Clark Kent are who he is - they're just different aspects of him that he hides from the other. Superman is who his birth-father Jor-El wanted him to be, while Clark Kent is who he grew up as. In fact, my favorite live-action Superman film, Superman II, is centered around a dilemma in which Clark Kent no longer wants to be Superman and wants to live a normal life and be with Louis Lane. People act like "Superman's a mary sue because he never struggles," but it shows that they completely misunderstand the character. It isn't that Superman doesn't struggle - Superman IS the struggle, he is Clark Kent's struggle. It's actually a very similar dynamic that Peter Parker has to Spider-Man, but for whatever reason people never make that connection.

*Purpose:* I'll give you that Toshinori's ambition, as a non-powered human, is in some ways more admirable, simply because he had more to lose. Compared to Clark, he _is_ mortal, after all. But again, even though Supes was _born_ with his abilities, he made a *choice* to use them to the benefit of mankind! He's not a hero out of "obligation" ---- I mean, technically speaking, he _owes_ this world _nothing_ more than any _other_ person! He's a hero more so out of a sense of "personal responsibility," in so much as the way some Super wealthy people see it as _their_ "duty" to make the lives of those less fortunate than them better. They don't do it for applause; they do it because (a) they posses the means to do it (b) almost no one else _Can_ do it at their level (c) it's like Karma. It's an unspoken truth of all man that for proper balance, we all _should_ strive to leave this world better than we found it... much the way we all _should_ strive to obey the laws so there is less disharmony. The video said "If superman doesn't help others, he feels like there's no point to his existence"... but this _isn't_ true. In several instances where he hasn't had his powers, Clark has _still_ strove to do the right thing, either in his job as a reporter, or just as a person, because.... *it's the right thing to do!* He's often wanted to _not_ bear the weight of the world, or fly into danger, not to "fulfill himself," but because "others need my help." And he has said *repeatedly* to normal humans that "We are all here to help each other,"... he just does more because, again... _he_ can. So Superman _rarely_ wanted to be a "hero", more so than be a "good person." Allmight wanted to be a _symbol_ not for personal gain either, but more to _inspire others_ to heights of greatness in a more focused way. That's why AM status as a "Symbol" is so important to him. Supes literally wears "Hope" on his chest, but does the incredible things he can because, as far as he's concerned...he's just doing his part. So _both_ "put themselves on their path".... their reasonings just differ. I _will_ agree with you, though, that there are *numerous* threats that would have appeared had Supes chosen to don his S or not. It says something about his capacity as a "hero" that he still _chooses_ to face these threats when really... he _doesn't have to._

Hurshie and kuro you got superman's character wrong in the last part. superman is more than a symbol of peace but also a symbol of hope as well, not because he well all way be there too save you but because, he believes the people around you in there hearts they are truly good and they will help you. that's the big difference between superman and all might. all might believes that if you don't have a quirk you could never be a hero, hell that's what he told izuku midoriya the first time they met. i could never see superman saying that to a kid that looks up to him. i mean to make matters worse he was born without a quirk and he was able to become a hero. also the thing about superman puting the world on his shoulders and he being the only one that could hold it is just straight up wrong. superman has shown time and time again that he is willing to let people solve their problems on their own, way? because he believes that in the end they will make the right choice. i mean that's way he is one of the founding members of the justice league, and is part of the trinity, because he knows he can do good, but he knows that he can't do as much good as a team of heroes, can whether they have powers or not. hell the only reason all might thoult izuku would be the next symbol of piece is because he has one for all. not because he believes that every one could be but because he thinks only the most powerful can be. even superman has said the he and the justice league couldn't fix all the world's problem, in justice league rebirth, when the watch towers crash landed in a country that was in a civil war, and batman arede with him that all we can do is believe that thing well turned out for the better. unlike all might who thinks that all you have to do is punch something enuf and that will fix the problem.

So saying one hero is better then thee other is Highly Subjective. Personally I think it’s only a matter of Personal opinion in the end.

All might fights until he becomes old. Then Superman hesitates because he doesn't want to hurt an old man. Then All Might kicks superman in the nads and wins.

while this video really tries to not be biased and show valid points, it totally is: 1) Clark does as much good as Superman does when he works at the daily planet (for 1 year he lost his powers and worked his ass off and put himself in danger trying to help people as the reporter) and you guys are confusing him with Batman, Clark IS the real person and Superman the mask. He was raised as a farm boy and he truly feels free when he is at the Kent's farm with his family or with Lois. Superman was build so Clark could use his powers and help people without having them been terrified of a masked demigod and to be Clark. 2) While it sounds nice that Allmight wants to be a hero and dedicated his life to become a symbol of peace, still feels like a selfish desire to be validated by people (like most characters in MHA), it's easier to respect someone who has all that power like sups and feels the need to help people, he could had done anything else with those gifts but still chose to put others before himself. 3) Superman has mentored younger heroes like supergirl, super-man (a chinese superman) or his own son and while he can't just pass on his ability to people, he does it so one day, when he isn't needed or is not around, others with similar powers can take his place. Superman thinks of all this things and has tried to put measures in case he dies and stays that way permanently. The most important part of this that by been Superman, he has already inspired countless heroes to take on mantles and do something with their gifts. Lastly, Superman is 5000000000000000000000000000000000000 times a team player than allmight, cause i don't know if you remember this, but there's this little team called the Justice League he's part of. He never comes to take over a situation alone, he's always there to help those in need and is very willing to cooperate with other people.

Great points! What really irked me was when the part where they said superman didn't inspire people to be their own hero, but All Might does? How was that fair? They both do that!

i hope your not talking about a fight, because earth prime superboy can take hits from superboy prime who is basically silver age superman.

XxSAVAGEDASOSAXx that’s most definitely not a fair fight... Superboy has been in the hero game before Deku. He’s vastly superior then deku in all most everything “Hero”.

@@treytucker9948 Because that's the truth. If Izuku tried to fight a Villain with a quirk whilst he had no quirk, 9 times out of 10 he'd die or at least get the shit beaten out of him. All Might was being realistic.
