This is exactly around what I want to do to my NA, right now its got a stock 1.6 in it, the goal is in a year or so to buy a 1.8 and start building it up while still driving the car in its stock form and getting handling and cosmetics all where I want them. Then bolt new motor in when its done! I have never done motor work before though, so I am really just not sure where to start, its a lot more precise work than your standard unbolt old part bolt on new that 99% of what I have done so far is! For now I will keep on researching and learning! Fantastic video, I have watched a few of yours and you have some awesome cars!

Incidentally, when you shave the head even a little, it changes the distance between the crank and cam gears. This means that you are changing the cam timing, and to correct it you need adjustable cam gears no matter what cams you're using :)

+Scarry Garry I'm sure it would help a little, however I wouldn't be able to run a filter if I were to do such a thing. The injectors are already moved from the stock location on the port of the cylinder head to the middle of the runners in the ITBs to improve atomization.

really cool. Would coil on plug help gain a bit more power? What about a crank wiper?
@TheSlipAngle9 жыл бұрын
+Frank Grimes I doubt it with the coil on plug. I am not blowing spark out. As far as the crank wiper, I am not sure how much frictional loss there is at the crank with these motors, so its possible there might be a couple horsepower there.
@svriderpokey8 жыл бұрын
Awesome video. Really well done. Have you done a 3 angle valve job, and back cut valves? I've heard that those help enhance just about every other breathing improvement. with the right equipment, and the head stripped of course, its a really easy process. I've done it several times in auto classes, but unfortunately, never to an engine that was meant to run again.
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
I didn't touch the valves, but I did port the head a little on the latest revision.
@frankfitzpatrick53009 жыл бұрын
Fantastic job with the engine ....Since the shiny spots show interference ....Wouldn't it be on the safe side to utilize a slightly thicker gasket to be on the safe side... Not sure If Hondata makes a thicker one ...But someone has got to make one....I would even look into a reusable copper gasket , they also flatten less & manufacture them in different thicknesses , also the ones ived used over the years have have a great seal & good seals around the tops of the cylinders ....Just my 2 cents ... GREAT VIDEO & ENGINE .... thanks
@TheSlipAngle9 жыл бұрын
Adding a thicker head gasket reduces compression. So running a thicker head gasket to shave the head more will yield no change in compression, just a head with less material. I ran this setup without any interference issues with a .060" shave and the stock .020" head gasket. I am considering dremeling down the crown of the relief cut on the piston so I can shave the head another .020"
@frankfitzpatrick53009 жыл бұрын
I did not think of that , what about the piston crowns ...Are they coated ? You definitely know what your doing ...Again , GOOD JOB , GREAT BUILD
@helloworldinthenet9 жыл бұрын
Frank Fitzpatrick No, they're not coated. Also look up Jafromobile here on KZbin. he uses 4G63 engines but many of the concepts should still apply, specially with his Hyundai build. He has a head has had too much shaved and shows how he gets more clearance for the valves. Great videos explaining what is to some hard to to understand just by reading.
@robertdewerff11147 жыл бұрын
Great work! Is it possible/pragamatic to grind... or massage more relief in the piston?
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
You can make the reliefs bigger. I only took as little material as needed to provide enough clearance.
@sp33der6178 жыл бұрын

give me your best estimate, how much whp would I be looking at with a 2001 miata, 0.040" head shave, RB intake, flat top/vics/vtcs intake manifold, RB header, cat delete, 2.5" catback, and ms3? how much do cams add? how much does ITB add? not planning to rev over 7k. thank you. this video is GOLD
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
I think you can make somewhere around 145 -155whp. Add 7-10 for ITBS and another 7-16 for cams depending on how aggressive and how much more you up compression to match them.
@pigeon8537 жыл бұрын
Are the ITB really worth 7-10 WHP over any intake manifold? I thought I read that the flat top made the same HP as the ITB below 7k?
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
If you can make the head flow more, then the ITBs will benefit over the flat top. The size of the ITBs matter as well.

Did you tune the motor using Alpha-N or speed density? Those ITBs can be picky with sensors and such. Also, do you have problems with vacuum pressure? I'm wanting to do this to a 1.8 and I'm stuck at how to tune with ITBs using megasquirt
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
We tuned straight off of TPS for the simplicity of it and the car actually runs very well. I don't even have a MAP sensor in the car. I run a Golden Eagle vacuum block and have no issues with vacuum.

Call me insane if I am, but would it be a terrible idea to take a Dremel and VERY lightly widen the valve reliefs in the pistons? If its only 2-3 thousands clearance that you need, I would imagine it wouldn't reduce the structural integrity of the piston any significant amount to do that. Just a thought...

@TheSlipAngle9 жыл бұрын
+jamesnotyou96 Why did you replace the lifters? If the noise is new and you recently touched stuff, I would re-trace whatever was touched. I've never heard grinding noises from a head, but the cam caps maybe being torqued incorrectly comes to mind. I am not sure what else could make that type of noise from the head.

Im actually doing an all engine 1.6 build right now im budgeted out to about 6483 right now after putting together all the part prices and whatnot. looking at about 150-170 whp. How much did you spend ballpark on this setup?
@TheSlipAngle9 жыл бұрын
+bayrckz You'd be lucky to break 150 whp on a fully built 1.6. Do not waste your time and money on the 1.6. The head sucks and just does not flow. It's fine for boost, but all motor power is not happening. A stock 01+ 1.8 can do 150whp with bolt-ons and tune. If you want all motor, then save yourself the hassle and do a 1.8 swap and start there.
@bayrckz9 жыл бұрын
thats the point of machining though, I'm not looking for crazy amounts of power, It's almost unecessary to have over 150 to the wheel for tracking honestly. It's all about having that power at a whim and not just spiking at 4-5k rpm. More responsive and alot more reliable than F/I
@TheSlipAngle9 жыл бұрын
+bayrckz Building an engine does not equal reliability. Reliable is how the engine leaves the factory. I did 172 whp on a completely untouched bottom end and it never skipped a beat, 152 whp on a completely stock internal BP4W. 150 whp sounds nice on paper but it's really not that fast.

what do you think a safe redline is for all forged internal 1.6? with moderate cams and FM springs.

I probably wouldn't go much higher than 8200 RPM. The crankshafts in these cars are not meant for high RPM and start to deform after 8500 RPM.
