Norevlimitr nice looking? Those tail lights are hideous. Reminds me of a broke Hispanic kid who bought a Miata and has all these plans for his car, minus money. The interior IMO is equally hideous. Hodge podge of crap. I'm not trying to be a dick here, just honest. Each his own I guess. Clean and nice looking to me means it should look like it came from the factory yet still totally custom.

Ship your car to japan and put in the Best Motoring Touge 200 challenge. I really enjoyed this video, that drive on the track really showed just how nicely prepped the car is, and I really enjoy how you've maintained a sense of class with the interior. Sometimes I look at my car and I feel like you said, you can just throw a bunch of parts on a car and not have it be one harmonious "system" of a car.. and then I feel dumb, but I need to remind myself you've had this car probably twice as long as I've had mine, and you really went after the details. I can really appreciate that and it put things into perspective for me.. I hope to one day have my NA on this level of tractability, performance , comfort and reliability wise. . Kudos, Quinn!

I've finally reached that stage of car ownership with my miata where I am beginning to modify the interior to my liking. I remember watching this video around the time it came out and I just glossed over your enthusiasm for interior customization, but I get it now. I've started by installing a ghost box and radio panel delete, deleted the center console and replaced with a shorty console, and I have many more plans. The interior of these cars is almost as customizable as the performance and it becomes its own money pit 🤣

Very very nice clean build! I was wondering why you didn't do a cooling reroute. Could you elaborate on that?
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Honestly, I think that the coolant reroute thing is a little over exaggerated. Spec Miata cars cannot run the reroute and they run 4 hour enduros like it's nothing. This car being N/A really doesn't get hot. With my big Koyo radiator water temps average 180-190 F. I also have an FM oil cooler. On a forced induction car that sees a lot of track time, I could see the benefits of doing the reroute. My turbo NA gets hot with the same radiator and an oil cooler on track.

Quinn, great review. I first got the itch for ITB's last year when I watched one of your other vids. What's the advantage of using the 99-00 head on the 01+ block? Wondering if I could yield similar results on my 01 while retaining the VVT head?
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
+Walter Dixon I only kept the BP4W head because I didn't want to re-wire the car for VVT and at the time there was no reasonably priced ECU that was capable of controlling VVT. VVT will help improve low end power, which I had to sacrifice some by having a fixed position intake cam gear that is set to optimize top end. Other than that the head designs are identical otherwise.
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
***** Lack of aftermarket offerings mostly. Skunk2 now offers a larger throttle body. There are also a great deal of people who have swapped what is referred to as a "Square-Top" manifold from JDM versions of the engine as well as a decent amount of people who have modified B-series Honda aftermarket manifolds as well.

Clean car! I might steel some of your ideas. I have a 99 atm I picked up to replace my MSM that was killed by a deer last year. One of the first things I did do to the 99 was swap the later nb2 center console to get usable cup holders. I love what you did with the lotus seats... I used to have some 2005 non probax seats that I had adapted for 5 point harnesses. They were nice but like you said, totally uncomfortable. I never even though about reupholstering them! Now I'm wishing I did! Are you worried about spark with the 99 ignition? I've heard bad things since I've been researching on the 99-00 nbs and was considering going the cop route. Also, heat-wise do you have any issues? I notice you're not running the reroute. Ok last question, e85??? LOL I'll go check out some of your other vids, maybe I'll find answers.
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
+Phil Miecznikowski I have had no ignition problems with this car or my turbo Miata at 19 psi making 254 whp on stock coils. I think COPs are a bit of a snake oil myth and probably only needed for big turbo cars or maybe 8400 RPM +. No issues with overheating on this car. e85 is not readily available where I am, but it would make a little more power with e85 or race gas with the current compression ratio.

One of the most complete if not the most complete ITB Miata's i know off ! Beautifull car from all aspects and deffinetely one of a kind. It really shows how much you enjoy it. Please never sell it ! :) I would like to ask your opinion quinn on a problem i have with my recently acquired ΝΒ1 99' Miata, since you are a master mechanic and you know this car inside out. I bought the car about a month now, with about 68.000 miles been loving it so far, it's in a bit of a rough condition though but with time i hope i can someday make it at least half as clean and pretty as yours. The problem i have is that when i'm low on fuel, but well before the E mark on the gauge so not that low. Everytime i even slightly push the car on a left hand corner and that's when the fuel swings to the right of the gas tank, the car cuts out completely, no missfire or anything, just like turning the key off. And then a second or a second and a half after it comes back again. I'm 99% sure it's something with the fuel pump or the gas tank. It almost never does it when i'm at half a tank or more. I already changed the fuel filter, and i want to clean out the gas tank as the next step, since after all these years it will have some crap in there. And then if the problem persists i will change the fuel pump. I hope i can get it fixed since it spoils all the fun and it's deffinetely not normal for the car. Any thoughts Quinn ?
@TheSlipAngle6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! As far as your problem goes, I would pull the pump and sending unit and inspect it. Make sure that your fuel tank baffling hasn't broken free as well when you can get eyes into the tank. The cutting out with lower fuel levels certainly sounds like a starvation issue. You might want to change the fuel filter as well just as a general maintenance thing.
@Nontas19936 жыл бұрын
Garage Quinn Motors Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge Quinn ! I have thought pretty much the same so far. It's definitely starvation. I did pull the fuel pump assembly twice so far. The first time to check the sending assembly and the pump motor, i didn't find nor could i see anything out of the ordinary. No debris on the filter sock or the piping of the assembly. The second time i pulled the pump to check inside the tank with a flashlight and with my hand, mostly to check the baffling like you said and again i think everything seemed to be in order. I mean there is baffling at the areas where the fuel comes in from the gas cap and to the right of the tank. Though i don't know how a normal miata tank looks inside since i haven't seen another one before so i can compare. I also already changed the fuel filter and it's still does it :( Again thanks a lot for your response and your car is an inspiration !
@hawkgeoff4 жыл бұрын
Quinn, why does your exhaust not sound blatty/ ricey? Is that due to the increased compression or is that attainable with a stock 1.8 motor? Awesome car... love it!
@frankargain57928 жыл бұрын
Does your ECU (Megasquirt?) use throttle position, manifold pressure or a blend of the two? I was seriously considering this about 8 years ago but people were having a lot of trouble with partial throttle fuel control. Great for racing but not for a daily. You don't seem to have any problem at low or high speeds.

Any reasons why you didn't install the very popular frame rails + butterfly brace combo? You think it's not worth it?
@TheSlipAngle6 жыл бұрын
I have just the frame rails on my turbo NA, but the weight increase wasn't a big deal because it makes a lot more power. The NB chassis is more rigid so I don't think they are really necessary. The roll bars add a lot of rigidity already. The rails + brace is just a lot of added weight without much benefit in my opinion. Especially on a car like this where keeping the weight down to make use of the limited power is important.

Did you switch the ECM in the car and if so to what? I'm wanting to run an ITB set up on mine and am trying to see what i will have to do sensor and tunning wise. Beautiful car btw!
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
Yes the car has an Adaptronics ECU. You will need TPS and an Intake Air Temp sensor (so no more MAF).

great video! with your experience i wanna to ask you.. i am consider to buy a toyota mr-2 or a mazda nb 1.8 what you suggest between thoose two cars?
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
I actually really like the MR-2 Spyders. Both are great platforms, Both have plenty of after market support and engine swap options too. If you are not trying to compete in a particular Auto X class or anything like that, I would pick whichever car makes you feel the most warm and fuzzy inside. Seriously :)

how did you mount the Apr mirrors? been looking all around trying to find out how its done and I figured you must know
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
Hey Bart, I am a set of base adapters for the Miata. They were made by a company called Slick Auto. I am not sure if they are still around. The base adapter allows you to utilize the existing two threaded holes in the door.

Pretty neat, I was looking around for them and found their website however everything is out of stock so I'm not sure if they're still in business. Thanks a lot!

Love this vid! Can I ask your opinion - do you think 15x9 225/45/15 on a stock NB is overkill for street/autocross?
@TheSlipAngle8 жыл бұрын
+freshwipe I think the 9" is just added unsprung weight when you are dealing with stock power. I run 8" with 215 wide for my street setup on this. You can run 225 on an 8" just fine. I would be willing to bet the time difference would be negligible. GRM did a tire test on an NC a while back and the wider tire/wheel combo was a little slower given the added weight and lack of power in the car to make full use of it.

pistons and rods would really be nice, but i understand the concept behind having an easily replaceable bottom end. great taste

got me thinking, around what price would i be looking at if i were to give a 97 miata with the 1.8 150whp, significantly less than the 185 i assume? if it's cheap enough it would be fantastic, would it need to have higher compression at 150?
@TheSlipAngle6 жыл бұрын
My first setup with an 02 block, BP4W head, BP5A intake cam, ITBs, header back exhaust and ECU did 152 whp. That was with no porting, head shaving, etc. It's tough because as you go down the rabbit hole, a K-swap quickly becomes the more viable option in terms of cost vs gains when chasing N/A horsepower.
@infamousjuan77146 жыл бұрын
For the same amount you spent on to build the motor do you recommend it to people or is boosting a better or cheaper option?
@TheSlipAngle6 жыл бұрын
I think for all motor power, K-swaps are a better option at this point. Forced induction is certainly less expensive and more bang for buck in terms of power. All motor stuff provides an experience though that you certainly pay a premium for.

Awesome street car! I thought the same about the car being something similar to how Tsuchiya would keep his AE86 as! Hands down you got a really sweet Super Street Car.

omg you did the 4.778 diff swap? how is it? i was considering it and bought the ring and pinion but then got a 6 speed and that was good enough for me
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
It really helped the car, but highway cruise gets really annoying. I have recently picked up a 6 speed and am going to go back to a 4.3 FD.

You look life a fairly tall guy. How do you fit on your Nb?. I'm wondering to get an nb and I'm 6'2 so just wondering
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
At 5' 11" I fit pretty well. You could probably get by with a lower mounted seat like I have, but your legs will definitely be bent a little. You would probably fit into an NC much better though.
@jakegreen38528 жыл бұрын
I love this build and I'm getting a Miata this year I'll be shooting for similar power numbers and I was wondering what it cost you to get this power and performance. I might go NA but I'm also thinking of forced induction.
@TheSlipAngle7 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. It was expensive. I would recommend just going K-series for all motor power. It will cost the same, but the outcome will be much better.
