Wow, well, I got to the end of the video, with only a few skips through. I KNOW the Katana 50 is amazing because I bought one a month ago. But the real revelations for me here were the Acoustic 150 and the Micro Cube, both with wrecked speakers but OMG, the full sound of the Acoustic and the range of sounds/effects in the Micro Cube were astounding. (I thought the Micro Cube REALLY dripped!) Also, your Celestion cab made anything played through it sound great. I once had a Roland Bolt 30 combo. It was a valve/solid-state hybrid pseudo Mesa kinda deal but always sounded "cardboardy", UNTIL I put a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker in it. Then it came to life... and how. It just goes to show how the right speaker can unleash the beast. Thanks for all the time and effort you (And Sweetwater) put into this. Unfortunately, I'm a Brit 😱 so I won't be buying from Sweetwater. Coda Music or Andertons may be getting some of my business though. Ok, that's enough niceness from me. Now for the rude and nasty comment you so crave... LAZY!! You only demoed your amp collection through three guitars. C'mon... What we want to see is EACH of your amps demoed with EACH of your guitars, in turn, in every genre, with ALL the gain stages and ALL the pup selections. Otherwise, how can we possibly have an informed opinion? Then, once you've achieved that, in 2030 or so, ALL your pedals thrown into the mix. That should keep you busy until you hit retirement. Make it so Ryan, just make it so. Over to you chap. 😃👍 PS. The Harmony was plain awful. I think you should take the guts out of it, install a zipper and give it to your wife as a trendy, retro purse. Just sayin' 😁

Back in the early 90’s when I picked up the guitar, I would have killed for a Boss Katana and a Squire Classic Vibe. That level of quality and value was non existent. Yes, I had to walk uphill both ways to school/home too.

^this. I purchased Fender Mutang GTX50 (thought about Boss Katana but I often play at night and Katana falls apart when plugged with headphones, sounds horrific), brand new costs 349 pounds, but I've been playing for a year; my first guitar was your typical "starter pack" as the amount of choices amps and pedals overwhelmed me at first having no idea what I'm looking at. The amp was terrible and had no effects so I quickly invested into my first "real" amp (Blackstar ID Core V3) which goes for 100 brand new; no newbie would spend 300 or 400 pounds on an amp when you're not even sure if you'll be playing the guitsr next month.

Definitely this is more amps than you need to own, but you're doing a good public service here. Those of us with only say, eight amps, could show our partners/significant-others that look, I'm less crazy than THIS dude. For that sir, you have my gratitude. Also you rock. Cheers. My brother says that shoe-goop stuff is good for stopping the spread of your speaker cone tear-out. A certain amount of tearout will add a "nice" distortion to your tone.

@@michaelbast8250 I much prefer my Deluxe Reverb clone to either of the Fender Princeton Reverbs... Maybe if I had a Princeton? Probably not, the DR has a bigger cabinet, bigger speaker, which is less directional and more musical to my ears, but to everybody had different preferences. I think playing the DR at home is fine, with the Weber 12F150 speakers, which are a bit less sensitive, I can put it on 3 or 4 no problem, just keep the guitar level down a bit, and it sounds wonderful, better than the Princeton Reverbs, so I traded-sold them..

There are a lot of good things to say about the old acoustic amps. I played bass through a B4 for years. It sounded fantastic until the preamp died in the most beautiful sounding distortion anyone ever. It was a sweeter distortion than a tube ever produced. The down side is that repair shops wouldn’t take it because the resale on old acoustics was so bad that if I stiffed them they couldn’t resell it to cover the repair cost. Four different shops wouldn’t guess what the repair cost would be in order that I put down a deposit. I used it as a power amp for a different preamp for another couple years until that died too.

This may trigger some people, but I never cared for Fender amps. I've had three over the years and never liked the tone and never bonded with them. My most favorite amp is the '90s-early '00s reissue Ampeg Reverberocket. I sold one in late 2019 (needed the cash) and loved that amp so much that I bought another one 2 months ago. They have a lush, warm tone with fantastic reverb built in. They run typically $400-$600 for the R12R (single 12" speaker). Strangely, used ones have been in that price range consistently for years. If you ever decide to downsize the "meh" amps, you should get this amp to challenge the Princetons. I do have a Supro Blues King 12, but the Ampeg has nicer cleans, whereas the Supro breaks up a bit earlier than I like. I have seen that a tube swap can fix that threshold and if you swap the speaker, it'll make the amp less dark.
@friedrudibega6384
@friedrudibega6384 3 жыл бұрын
I had a reverborocket from earlier (probably 70s) and it was the best little amp. Really liked to be dimed. I'd mess with the vibrato depth and speed while playing live and just got some great stuff out of it. Traded it in on some marshall combo which was good but didn't have what the Ampeg brought to the table. It was a dumb move. I think you can just swap out the first pre amp tube on the Supro and it'll clean up better. Cheers

@@friedrudibega6384 I haven't decided which brand tube to drop in the preamp section of the Supro. There is one or two videos where the tube swap was done and it sounded good. I still like the Ampeg better, however at a backbreaking 45 lbs, it's likely never leaving the house, hence the Supro which weighs 25 lbs give or take.😊

Preface: Wife works at home - Thus, i'm on low to no volume ration The Princeton sound on 10 ideally would be the sound on 2. That is what I need and want! The Supro was getting there. The Revv with the built in attenuator and other features was great until I looked up the price! In the early 90's I had that model Crate! That is why I changed to acoustic for 20 years! In your video it sounds much better than mine did then. The Katana sounded much better than the one I tried in the store. No wonder they are the top seller, every store I have been in the clerks try to sell them before any other amp.

I love my Princeton ‘65 Reverb! Its true about that space between 4 and 5 on the volume, a small physical distance yet a huge difference in tone. I prefer it at 5 but in the band situation I often get asked to turn down so I find a compromise at around 4.5

Its a shame you didn't get (or read) what the harmony 8418 is about. Its not a post 1960s amp. Its built around a circuit about 100 years old. The hum that you were hearing is what happens when you put a single ended 5 watt (that is the same circuit as the first Fender champs) with a metal Pentode 6sj7 pre amp tube and a glass bottle 5y3 valve rectifier and a high voltage 6v6. Its basically the model T Ford of guitar amps in terms of the circuit. I have a couple and I love them. Fizz free zone completely.. Take some time with it one day.

Guitar effects? I have THOUSANDS, between the ONE Korg mega-pedal I have and the Ga-JILLION built into the amps, the Korg pedal and my DAW. I don’t want to get started on synthesizers - we’ll be here all day! Suffice it to say that two of them have keyboards, and the other five are rack-mounted and can be played from either keyboard or via MIDI from my DAW. And if you’re curious, the majority of the instruments and amps mentioned here (and my 32-in, 8-Bus and/or stereo out Toft console, the great-great-grandson of the studio console that recorded “Hey Jude” by The Beatles, and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones were purchased by me from Sweetwater Sound. I'll never understand why some people prefer the Princeton Reverb to Deluxe Reverb, which has a larger cabinet, larger speaker, larger sound, and most importantly - BETTER sound imho, even at low volumes. Even if you put a 12" speaker in a PR, it still a smaller cab, and the reverb in the Deluxe Reverb is even better, as good as PR reverb is. PR may have an edge on tremolo? But overall, no comparison. I never used my two easy 1970's PR amps, so they are gone. If I want a blackface sound, it's always the DR. If you need a bigger sound, just plug it into an external cab - a 4X12 may rock your world? Of course you can do that with a PR too, but seriously - who does that? My speaker-out is going to be a mid-control soon, the nice thing about "clones" is you don't have to worry about hot-rodding them, although this change is reversible. I like the reverb on channel 1 too, being a low impedance guy, often using the 2nd lower impedance input on channel 2, since I must have that reverb. That said, the non-reverb Deluxe, Princeton, Pro, and Super (yes Super had a blackface non-reverb?) are all wonderful amps, you just have to add a Fender tube reverb and you're good to go. The guy who does the demos at GFX amps (GuitarfetishTV I think?) often uses his "Super" blackface, black faceplate, four speakers, looks like a real Fender...but IS it? Fender doesn't claim to have built any, but you never know...or do you?

Hi Ryan, a Spaniard superfan here. Do you think Fender Vaporizer is a good amp for surf? Is the reverb drippy enough? Thanks a lot

I need some suggestions. I’m looking for a lighter weight gig amp that has a lot of clean headroom. I currently lug around a silver face twin reverb that weighs about 85 lbs. It wasn’t a problem carrying it when I was 18 but now I’m 51.

Sub-5 watt tube amps? Worth it, or just stick to digital modeling for low-volume playing/recording?

Piece of duct tape over that hole on both sides of the speaker. I know everyone will lose their minds over me suggesting that, but it will keep it from getting any worse and stop any farting noises the loose edges may be making. Did that to a torn speaker on my old Traynor TS-10 and it worked fine for years.

The Princeton reverb will always be my Fender go to amp hands down. The Alamo, Harmony, and Wangs were great too, and the Harmony to me might have had the best tone, but I love vintage 5 watt amps. The tone of the Orange justified everything I can't stand about Oranges, and I've got no love for the new Supros. I have yet to hear one that sounds anything like the old Valco made amps they were modeled after. I have a Micro cube and really only keep it around for remote guitar testing when no 120V outlets are available. I just can't get my head around DSP amps. I'm sure I'll be called a Cork sniffer, and you know what? I'm ok with that. Tone is subjective, and that's my basis. 'Your' basis will be different.

IIRC that Alamo was a single ended 6V6 loaded amp. I believe it maybe 5ish watts? Not that there was hell of a lot of difference between 10 watts and 5 watts. In my opinion the Achilles heel on those old department store amps was the cheap ceramic speaker. If you get tired of that nasal sound I’m sure any new Jensen will be an improvement. The original on my 73’ Embassy was trashed when I got it so I have no idea what it would’ve sounded like.

I think it would be really cool if you reviewed some of the cheapest springverb amps you can find. Like an afforda-amp video? I recently got a frontman 25R and its no Princeton but the vibe is 100% there. I know that while I was looking, it was really hard to find demos of some of those ancient secondhand amps, so something like that would be really nice to see.

My one and only amp is one of Orange's little solid state ones, the Crush 12. It's also surprisingly loud for its size. It's single channel like the Micro Terror but it can go cleaner since the overdrive is separated from gain. Sounds good too. Only thing it really lacks is an effects loop.

The fender Princeton is essentially a country music band amplifier. The distortion and the breakup sounds very muddy. Might sound a little better with Gibson's style guitar. But those fender amps are definitely not worth what they're saying and selling them at.
