I'm a digital artist living near Tokyo and I can vouch the art supply and stationary game is on another level. Its been great for inspiration but not for my wallet. However its gotten me back into physical sketchbooks and actually using my planner (mostly as an excuse to use stickers and stamps) If you're still here, there's a place in Roppungi Hills called, "Shueisha Manga Art Heritage" which currently is featuring One Piece but has some traditional manga printing plates on display. It was really cool to see even if you don't watch the show. Also its in the basement of a new building in that area that has a really great free viewing area of tokyo. We went on a clear day a few weeks ago and were able to see Fuji

Something I learned for pens after taking drafting/technical drawing/architecture and am so sad isn't part of the normal artist pens- Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph Pen A MUST HAVE for any traditional artist imo. They are AMAZING and can come sooooo small. I love them and need to rebuy because mine got ruined by someone in my family. (They can not be washed in water!)

Oh my god, those pose books look so useful!! Now I wanna see if I can find any similar ones online! And oohhh, I didn't realize that screentones were such a hard thing to find anymore, I used to work in a comics museum as the student assistant who made high-res scans of the artwork and sometimes recorded the metadata for the museum back-end, and a significant chunk of the stuff I scanned was one particular newspaper comic from the 70's that used screentone as a material in every single comic. Like, I scanned literal HUNDREDS of these strips and they all used it, so it must've been easier to find in the states back in the day.
@raycreveling158310 ай бұрын
In the US you'd be looking for halftone sheets of screen sheets. They were common in the printing industry when I stated in the 90's. We kept them in 5% increments from 20% to 60%. We used them with our press camera to make polyester plates for our presses.

I sat and had a small mindboggle at Echo not knowing about .1 and .05 pens. They're not exactly commonplace here in scandinavia, but, they're not hard to find. Any art supply store has them, usually in sets ranging from .5 and down to .05. Always interesting to learn about differences between countries :)

Most art books (yes, even the Japanese ones) are like, 90% art visual guides. So they are useful even if you can't read them (I own a ton of Japanese art books, many of them in PDF form ^^) Jo must be great at shopping 😮 Good call on the prop art book! I'd buy a lot of stuff like that - maybe not specifically girl's clothing books, but you know, like, props and stuff. Really neat. So many stamps! 😮 Cinnamonroll is a what? Does Ironmouse know? 😮 6:41 - accidental Jojo pose? Oh yeah, we have that sort of correction tape stuff here in the UK too ^^ Haven't seen them with art on them though! So many stickers 😮 9:09 - H'llo, Jo! Hope you're doing well! 9:34 - Fuji-san eraser! Neat! I've always wanted one, they sound so cool 😋 I'm quite amazed that you don't have those ultra-thin fineliners in the US. I have like, a budget multi-size pack from here in the UK (from a company called Hobbycraft), and there's a 0.05mm pen in there. Honestly, I didn't think to check until this video, lol. Grafix! Good brand. Okay, most Japanese stuff is good, so maybe I'm a bit silly saying that. But that brand is really common here too (I used to sell them in a discount store, lol 😋 Oh lordy, I've never seen real screentones before 😮 (and no, that's not an age thing, they've just never really been around here). I did have a disc from like, back in the late 90s that had digital screentones though - branded 'Computones' - not that they're usable now, they're too low res 😅 Based on what you've said, it sounds like screentones work like transfer stickers, which are pretty common in the hobby/model kit stores, so I don't think Japan will ever totally stop making them. 24:56 - Japan kinda celebrates it more like an excuse to cosplay and get drunk, lol. Look up Shibuya Scramble on Halloween, it's nuts 🤣 They do celebrate a ton of like, autumn related stuff though, so they do celebrate the autumn harvest (Halloween is based on a druidic/Irish autumn harvest) and stuff like that. Breathing outtakes 🤣

A DIY that might work for making screen tones at home if someone just wants to try it out before investing. You can make an image transfer with packing tape, that basically becomes a transparent sticker. So if you print a screen tone pattern with a laser printer you can transfer it onto packing tape. By sticking the packing tape on the image. Soaking it in water for a little bit and then rubbing the paper off the back. It does seem like some tape works better than others so that might be worth testing before making the final artwork. Like there are limitations to the size of packing tape you can find. But this also means that you design your own and print your own. There is a good tutorial by our upcycled life about how to do this for like scrapbooking purposes but I think it could be applied other ways.
@darren.mcauliffe10 ай бұрын
The dot thing is as you said an old printing thing that doesn't happen anymore. If you want your art to 'look like a comic' that's what you do. You can replicate it digitally, though it's been a loooong time since I have. If memory serves you lower the DPI to get that effect. But as an exploring artist, absolutely do it in analog while you can.

One of my favorite places is Kawashima in Yokosuka. Two floors absolutely stuffed with art and stationary supplies. Also almost any 100yen shop (Daiso, Wattman's, Seria, Can Do, etc) - it's amazing the amount of decent-quality stuff they have for 100 yen (~$0.68 - $0.80 depending on conversion at the time). It's where I like to get all of my origami paper, card binder pages and deck cases, stationary storage, notebooks, even the pens at those shops are better than most American pens. I got a coin purse at a random shop under a train station and 2 1/2 years later it's just now starting to fray a little bit.

In the 80s we used to do newsletters using cut and paste sometimes with pictures before the days of easy access to scanners. We had a couple of sheets that we could put on the copy machine glass before photo copying. You can buy transparent sticker sheets for printers here is the US. I wonder if you could print a pattern on them if you run out of your nice ones
