All My Children always took the time to do wonderful send offs of characters when the actor or actress that had the role past away in real life. They always did it in a way that I felt as if I had the opportunity to say goodbye to both the character and the actor / actress. I grew up watching this show with my Grandmother when I was visit her during summer holiday. She loved the show for the many strong female roles and the writing. Ms. Warwick was a legend whose career spanned several decades. Phoebe will be forever remembered.

Such a sad episode. Ruth Warrick/Phoebe was one of the best parts of AMC, and I loved her relationship with Brooke.

Two thoughts. Some editor had to spend time looking at a lot of tape to find the 'best of ' clips that we have here. its a fun job to have, while you are watching Ruth work with the comedy, the drama, and the melodrama, but its a lousy job to have deciding what to leave out. She was incredibly consistent in her work. Second, very few of the writers of this episode actually would have had the pleasure of writing much for this rather unique soap character. There are no characters like this conniving or humorous 'Grand Dame of Pine Valley' in daytime to write for and haven't been for some time. And that explains a lot about why soaps are failing to keep their audience.

Phoebe was one of a kind character. Agnes Nixon wrote Rachel and Ada on "Another World" to be Erica and Mona because she hadn't been greenlighted fit for AMC in the 1960's, and Liz Matthews was the Phoebe of Bay City. Like Erica and Phoebe, Rachel and Liz became friends later on, and Liz and Ada did have a few romantic rivalries like Mona and Phoebe did.

AMC was generally very good at acknowledging the passing of its veteran actors (as well as characters who died but whose portrayers lived). The show provided funerals for Kate Martin, Charles Tyler, Mona Tyler Kane, Phoebe Tyler Wallingford, Myrtle Lum Fargate, and Palmer Cortlandt. I do wish Phoebe's funeral included flashbacks of Phoebe with Charles (given the popularity of the Phoebe/Charles/Mona triangle), but overall this episode was well done. When GL's Charita Bauer (Bert Bauer) passed away, Bert's funeral was not shown and no out-of-town characters who were close to Bert (such as her son Mike Bauer) were shown. AMC handled the loss of its actors much better.

She was a true Soap Legend. She played the evil Nurse Janet on Guiding Light, Then Aunt Edith on As The World Turns then of course Phoebe. She also worked with Orson Welles in Citizen Kane. I would have loved for her to guest star on Downton Abbey. She would have been a riot sparaging with The Dowager Countess.

I think that when they honor a Dead Cast Member, they have to ask the Families and if they say No, they can't do it. On UK Soaps it's not necessary. When Anne Kirkbride who played Diedre on Coronation Street from 1972-2014, they gave her a proper sendoff on The Show. She was the Third Longest Cast Member whom the Fans saw Grow up. Remember when Michael Zaslow died, his Death on Guiding Light wasn't acknowledged until many years later. Even then they didn't have a Funeral although they rebroadcasted an Episode that Won him that well deserved Emmy.

Langley made his final appearance in December 1995, at Pine Valley Hospital where he was helping put up Christmas decorations in the halls. Langley remained in Pine Valley for a while, but due to Louis Edmonds's health problems, he was written out of the show in April 1997 as being in Egypt on archeological digs. When Edmonds died in 2001, the writers oddly choose to not have Langly die, but rather have him become an unseen character. He was last mentioned in a current context in August 2002, when he missed Brooke's wedding because he was on business in South Africa. When Phoebe died in 2005, Brooke said that Phoebe's last words were "Langley is waiting for me." This confirmed that sometime between August 2002 and May 2005, Langley died.
