Don't forget Donna Pescow who played a Lesbian Psychiatrist. That was really groundbeaking but the UK Soaps were so far ahead. 30 Years ago they had the first same sex kiss on a Soap Opera Brookside. with two college girls beth and margaret but sadly beth died.

My mother didn’t want me watching soaps when I was 11….too much adult content. Was told to go out and play, sled, skate, etc. my mother reminded me of Laura Petrie on Dick Vandyke. She watched Days of our Lives and The Secret Storm…..but my babysitter would watch ALC and I watched it for YEARS even after I had my children. Time goes so fast! The fact I recall these plots is amazing. I’m 63.

I was just 9 years old in 1970 but I was in love with Richard Hatch... the way he cried the time Phillip and Tara said their vows the night before he left for Viet Nam..... so sweet. Wish we had a clip of that. I was so sad that Phillip "died" in Viet Nam and so disappointed when Phillip "came back" and he was no longer played by my beloved Richard Hatch. Was still loving him later on Streets of San Francisco and Battlestar Galactica.

BTW, the "lottery number" mentioned in the first act was in reference to the Vietnam War- which was very much the crux of the first 13 weeks of All My Children. Agnes Nixon learned very well from Irna Phillips about using daytime drama as a mirror for society, from Vietnam then to transgenderism today.

Also Tara is doing her homework and then Tad does his and what happens, he gets cold busted over his affair with Marian Colby whose daughter Liza he dates. Kids in Pine Valley were never academically inclined. On UK Soaps it's the same thing.

This is the AMC I remember. For its time if was pretty trend-setting--they dealt with the Viet Nam war and other issues. Wish those early eps were still in existence.
@normadelpin42893 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree. No one really planned on preservation of these early, early gems of AMC. Black and white, and 30 minutes, with a social conscience, All My Children was groundbreaking...but not as interesting as One Life to Live at the time. One Life to Live had a poor, Polish- American family, the Woleks. Then there were the Grays, who were African-American, and the daughter was passing as caucasian. The Lords were rich and owned the newspaper, and whose patriarch was a child molester. There was a Jewish family, I think they were named Siegel, and the Irish-Catholic Rileys. All of these families were on the air in the late 60s on OLTL. I was lucky enough to watch it the summer of '68, its very first episodes.

Actually Andrew Burt played him from 1972. He was to Emmerdale what David Ackroyd was as Gary Ewing #1 on Dallas who appeared on the show 45 years ago when Dallas became a full series with a "New" Southfork.

Rosemary Prinz had been popular on As The World Turns for many years beforehand, which was #1 at the time. It was a huge ratings boon to have her starring in the new show. I'm not sure why Amy left town, though.

Exactly! When I was a Kid, I didn't know why her name was mentioned.

It wasn't a home movie, it was a telecine(kinescope)print used so that stations on the West Coast, Hawaii and Alaska would have a copy for broadcast. Old telecines of "Dark Shadows" episodes were very much the reason why the series remains intact (all bar one episodes exist- one was reconstructed with cliffhangers, audio and still pictures. Some of those markets did not have color video tape capabilities in 1970. Hell, Australia didn't have color video tape (period) until 1976!

Amazing, a classic episode before Ruth married Joe; and Erica at a young age; and Phoebe married to Charles Tyler as all the Pine Valley action begins.

I was so in love with Richard Hatch - the fellow who played Phillip Brent! I remember crying my eyes out when Phillip married Tara the night before he left for Viet Nam! And then he was killed! I must have been 10 or 12 years old. I wrote Richard Hatch a fan letter once! It's so strange to see him in this video as I saw him then - my memory now of him is more how he looked in later years when he was in the Streets of San Francisco and in Battlestar Gallactica. He was SOOO handsome!

@laminage2 ай бұрын
He is is "real" father. His full real name was Phillip Charles Tyler Brent Jr., but folks called him Charlie. Even though Dr. Chuck Tyler wasn't his real father, he still looked at him as his father, also Phoebe looked at him as her Great Grandson. The Boy with Two Fathers, like Phillip Spaulding on Guiding Light.

A while back, they had sort of an All My Children reunin on Soap Talk. They had so many beloved favorites. Richard Hatch and Karen Lynn Gorney were amongst them. They showed old clips which were charming and sweet. They were a supercouple before the term was coined. Richard and Karen still have the same sweet chemistry. It made me wish they could bring Phillip back from the dead, again, and bring Tara back to town. They would be so sweet.

Why did Erica tell Phil Brent who his parents was
@laminage7 жыл бұрын
Because she was very petty and cruel. A True Mean Girl and she hated the fact that Phillip Brent preferred Tara over her.
@carterbentonjr3996 жыл бұрын
Plus she was hoping to win Philip over by telling him who his biological parents were. As always with Erica back then it blew up in her face.
@laminage6 жыл бұрын
@@carterbentonjr399in't that the truth. Remember when Tom Cudahy Husband #3 found out that Erica lied about The Birth Control Pills. I told UK Soap Fans about The Book and they found it hilarious. When I look at UK Soaps in 1970 in comparison to US Soaps it's so different. In The UK, it's more Blue Collar, The Ladies were either Factory Workers or Barmaids and the Fellows are Garage Mechanics, Bar Owners, Convenience Shop Owners, and Construction Workers.

@laminage2 ай бұрын
On The UK Soap Opera Coronation Street, Ken Barlow went to Jail for 10 Days to protest the war, even though england wasn't involved and in Australia a Young Pop Star was drafted and got sent to Vietnam. Kan Barlow is played by William Roache who is now the longest uk male soap actor in tv history. His son linus acts on the Law & Order franchise.

Wasn't Charlie conceived the night before Phil left for Vietnam in 1972? I read some place that they wed in an abadoned church I think & went to an inn to make love. I think thats how it went I'm not exactly sure though
@laminage4 жыл бұрын
If Memory Serves me correctly they married in a Gazebo but it wasn't legal. When Tara thought Phil had died in Vietnam, she "married" Chuck but Nick Davis said that The Wedding shouldn't happen. Tara was with both Phil and Charles "Chuck" Tyler and when "Charlie" was conceived born Phillip Charles Tyler Brent Jr. Sadly enough Phillip who as a Cop died in the line of duty and of course Chuck became a Doctor. It's so amazing to see Actors originate Roles and discover it wasn't them.
