Thank you for your videos! I just started getting into art! (I’ve always considered myself not very artistic, like I can’t draw or anything) BUT I’ve fallen in love with water color and gouache! and these videos are awesome to just practice and practice! Thank you

I'm getting the primary colors set of gouache from Winsor and Newton designers gouache, to see how it goes and since with those colors you can make any color you want. I'm also getting the watercolor art journal you mentioned , the Strathmore 400 series 8” x 5.5” and some Blick Scholastic Wonder White synthetic Brushes . I'm exited lets see how everything preforms.

Personally I LOVE the HimI paints. Also I love my Dollarama paintbrushes and advise people use more flat, filbert and makeup brushes with gouache! In Canada there are good paintbrushes at the dollar store. Avoid the wide, floppy natural hair or too scratchy harsh ones. Look for golden and white takalon bristles. But testing out is the only real way of learning quality. I’ve also notice gouache performs oddly (to me at least) on part or 100% cotton. It seems to work better on cellulose. You can avoid warping by taping down ad letting it dry while still tapes and/or stretching the paper by pre wetting it, etc. I’ve also heard about wetting the reverse side. Personally I think the HimI gouache is almost as good as full art it’s grade and the price is so monumentaly better. You get more than 24 times the amount of paint! I can even paint big wall decorations in gouache and find it more cost effective to order a whole new set of HimI/Miya when I need more white vs just buying white lol! Still prices and availability vary by where you are on the planet so it may be different where you live. I advise people try out make up brushes with watercolour and gouache they can be amazing for soft, blending, cloud and gradient effects! Also try to get good lighting set up when you paint such as diffused camera light or other lighting set up. You can also premix colours in empty half and full pans and wet them before use. Add a touch glycerin or honey to Holbein gouache if you put them in a pan or pallet to dry otherwise after a while they be come a useless impossible to re-wet rock. But mixing in some glycerin or honey fixes this! I hope this helped someone, fun video thanks.

Would you say the selection of 10 colors for the Winsor and Newton set is sufficient for getting all the colors you need? I’m new to gouache and I’ve been wondering how many/which colors are essential!
@JessChungArt4 жыл бұрын
yes i definitely would say so!! with these 10 colours you can pretty much mix any colour you need. i love that it comes with a cool and warm colour in each of the primaries. the only other colours i got for convenience were burnt umber and burnt sienna, but those are also colours you can mix from the set of 10. hope this helps! :)

Hi Jess, I believe you're in Australia as well? Where were you able to buy the princeton brushes? I can't seem to find them anywhere!

I get them at this store in Melbourne: theartshop.com.au/ They don't have it listed on their website for some reason but they definitely do have it in store! Or if you're interstate you can call them to order it

Hi Jess I’m wondering how you find the art spectrum gouache behaves for rewetting? I have a big tube of the white and it gets very grainy if it dries and is tricky to rewet. I have been planning to get more of their gouache but am concerned they will all behave like that. I’m in Australia too
@JessChungArt4 жыл бұрын
Hi Leonie! So sorry I only just saw this. I haven’t experienced any issues with rewetting them. I try to only put onto my palette the amount I need for the next 20-30 minutes of painting to avoid letting a big amount dry out on my palette. I also use a spray bottle to mist it so it doesn’t dry quickly. If it does dry completely (eg sometimes I leave it out overnight and use the same palette) I just put water on it and let it soften. I don’t notice it drying out any differently to the Winsor and Newton’s, so I wouldn’t say it’s an issue! :)
@jonmahashintina4 жыл бұрын
gouache rewets differently to watercolour, you need to allow for the water to soak in at least 20 minutes. I have art spectrums and the white, ultramarine, and burnt sienna exhibit this behaviour. You can try adding a few drops acrylic retarder medium to your water, and using a stay wet palette to keep it from drying out so severely. (be careful of mould though)
@wayfaringspacepoet3 жыл бұрын
what material is your palette made from? I'm planning on using acryl gouache in plein air painting and want to have a palette that both fits my storage box in addition to being easily washable and non-porous

Thanks for the helpful info! How do you film your videos? I'm having trouble finding a tripod to use to film my paintings
@JessChungArt4 жыл бұрын
I use the K&F Concept TM2324 tripod and I just position it in a way which allows me to film overhead nicely. Although I would prefer to get a tripod that allows you to extend it at a 90 degree angle so that it sits overhead more nicely and doesn't take up table space, if that makes sense. But this one works for now!

Is the canson XL mix media good for gouache??
@JessChungArt4 жыл бұрын
oh i just bought that recently actually! i've only used it a bit and it is good for gouache, but personally i don't quite like the texture on the paper. it has more paper texture than the canson watercolour paper. i'll be making a video on some art supplies i bought recently and will definitely be showing/talking about the mix media paper too!

do we use an acrylic or watercolour brush for gouache? and what r their differences?
@vampt_xoxo3 жыл бұрын
If you're still wondering, you can use either acrylic OR watercolor brushes :)) But take not that watercolor brushes hold more water than acrylic brushes so it may be harder to get the desired consistency you are trying to acquire! so i recommend you get atleast 2 watercolor brushes (one round and one flat) to use for under-paintings (aka base colors, light washes) and a few acrylic brushes for detailed techniques that holds less water (usually stiffer) for a more precised and clean painting. :)
