BMW has introduced a full-size 7-passenger SUV called the X7. Built on a longer platform shared with the new X5, this larger X7 has the same engines, drivetrain and available options as the X5 but in a larger package. The X7 is powered by either a 3.0L Turbo 6-Cylinder or a bi-turbo V8. The power goes to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Both the X5 and X7 have the same dash featuring two 12.3-inch screens for the instrument cluster and iDrive system. The third row of seats is roomy enough for adults and the second row of seats can be operated remotely from the front seat, rear cargo area and with one-touch of a button. The X7 makes a run to 100km/h in 6.1 second using the 3.0L 6-cylinder, a half second slower than the equivalent X5.

Great review. Not too long, not too short, just the right length giving out all the important info. Btw, totally agree with your point on the iDrive. It's really easy and safer to operate, than having to reach out to a touchscreen and taking your eyes off the road. Some competitors, e.g. Audi, have put too many functions on touchscreens, with not so user-friendly menus and sub-menus and fingerprints all over the place, and sadly cut back on tactile and easy to use buttons/knobs/controllers short-cuts..

I’ve owned new Audi’s with the MMI, Ford with Sync 3 and VWs with their system and I agree 100% with your assessment. The Audi Virtual Cockpit is much better than the newest BMW gauges but the iDrive 6.0/7.0 is much better than the MMI system and by far the best I’ve used. 1 reason why I bought a X3 over the Q5.

Actually saw my first X7 on the road the other day. Good proportions and presence. Not a fan of the front but it's not terrible. Looks better from the rear except for the disappointing North American taillights which use all red lights for everything and the same lamps for brakes and indicators. I often find myself reminiscing about when German cars had proper taillights, even in North America.

I think that BMW nailed it here. I never liked the X5, loved the X6 instead. The X5 had too little space on the inside and always looked too large on the outside in my opinion. This is a real "Land Cruiser" from BMW for those who want to travel with pace and space, not to mention grace. Sorry Jaguar. I love this gorgeous un-Bangle design and the X7 has to be the new King of the Hill, in this third row luxury segment.

When it comes to these heavy SUVs, power is a big issue when travelling the highways in BC. For example, driving the Coquihalla with it elevation changes can challenge under powered vehicles . IF you’re driving the highways of Alberta, power issues are not a problem, it’s so flat there. My 2cents.🇨🇦

I agree but I wouldn't touch that 4.4L V8 from BMW with a 10 foot pole. It is notorious for it's problems...even after many years and many iterations. I can't tell you how many new BMW's I see on the side of the road waiting for a tow and alot of them are the 50i models...like M550, 750...etc. I also have a friend who is a BMW mechanic and told me to avoid that engine if you want peace of mind. Look and read the BMW forums before you buy.

Then you truly don't know AB if you think it's all flat. Anyway, the 6 cylinder still delivers more power and performance than 95% of vehicles on the road. It is enough. Don't expect sport performance from a brick with wheels.

The SUV looks elegant and takes me back to the good elegant looks of the first e-53 X5 but it's just too big for me. It's also too bad, that BMW didn't put this design on the new X5. It would have been a win-win all-rounder. Good review as always 👍.

Is there anyone else who never found the oversized grill ridiculous? I thought it was badass the first time I saw it. It's an unapologetic celebration of the excess. I especially like it with the chrome line that goes up the side like a tusk on some trims. It looks like a boar. Proud pigs.

It’s all a matter of perspective. The front light assemblies are small. If the lights were bigger, the grill wouldn’t look so big.
@IKhanNot
@IKhanNot 4 жыл бұрын
No the grill is too big. It doesn't take a genius to realize that car grills are getting way too big. It exposes the AC condenser to get hit by rocks and looks obnoxious. If the big 3 add big grills people complain about it but the second a German manufacturer does something wrong, they get praised for it. Makes no sense.

I very like the grill because it matches the size of the car. But don’t like the large air intakes below. I would prefer a cleaner look, like as the Mazda CX-9. I also like the small lights. Unfortunately the X7 is twice as expensive because of import duties.

I've seen it in person too, and you're right that it doesn't look cartoonish and ridiculous in person, due to the SUV being so much bigger when taken in as a whole than any one camera angle can show, but it certainly doesn't look good. Expensive and ostentatious yes, but certainly not beautiful, sleek, stately, sporty, or even attractive. It's more like a G-Wagen or Chrysler 300 than, say, a Dartz Prombron or Bentley Bentayga. It was just trying to look expensive, and it succeeded, it isn't a cartoonish failed attempt at looking expensive like the Bentayga, but it didn't succeed at anything else. Truly beautiful luxury cars take an already beautiful design, and then add chrome, a few more well-placed body creases, a bit more width, and some rich, complex, high-quality colors that seem designed to complement the car, like Cadillac's pearl white, Mercedes and Nissan/Infiniti's dark purple, or Aston-Martin's silver. If you put that stuff on a mediocre or bad design, it will probably look a bit less ugly yes, but it won't look like any effort was put into making it look good apart from the expensive tack-ons, you're still putting lipstick on a pig. It looks expensive now, but 10 years from now, nobody will be able to tell whether it's just an X5 that took a trip down the bad aisle of Autozone, and the underlying design definitely won't age well. There's nothing about it I hate, but the only thing I really love about it is the rear end, which the Toyota Land Cruiser it was clearly "borrowed" from wears better anyway. The slightly taller lights on Toyota's version fit the tall car better, making them so much narrower to emphasize the BMW badge makes the rear look almost like a blank wall from the chrome strip down.

With a base Escalade starting at $89,5oo Canadian, and optioned out is just over $120,ooo. All of a sudden the BMW appears to be a bargain. Cadillac’s big car (CT6?) never really completed with the 7-series sedan, no comparison... so either the BMW is a steal or the Cadillac (maybe the Navigator too?) are North America’s biggest ripoff I love this new X7... on the inside, at least. Even tough its clearly out of my price range. Thanks for another excellent review, Zack.

I found out why the grille doesn't look as ridiculous as when you first saw it. I would wager that most people saw this grille on the concept vehicle. Google that concept vehicle and you'll see it's still ridiculous. For production that made the grille every so slightly smaller (lower bumper is larger with the production vehicle if you look carefully) and the head lights ever so slightly bigger. That's why I believe the production X7 all of a sudden doesn't look as crazy as when we first saw it in concept form.

As said, "BMW is already late to the party" in bringing a proper third row SUV, it seems that they will be late the to the party again in a proper electric SUV space as well. Whereas Audi and Mercedes have already taken the wrap off their electric SUVs, BMW didn't seem to have even progressed beyond the concept. Have a mixed feeling about this X7. Although it's an entirely new offering from BMW, it doesn't seem to excite me as much. Perhaps, I'm no longer a petrol/diesel head. Still, if comparing with the competition, X7 looks pretty good. Mercedes GLS is a typical Mercedes - old school, that I'm not really a fan of. Audi Q7 has lost the charisma of the previous gen. And it is not a proper three-row SUV as well. Perhaps, Audi is not invited to the party ;)
