@@a-vic7559 The new version works loads better at low volume than the older one on account of having a master volume. It's not perfect - it's still a tube amp, they like being cranked up - but it's very usable. If all else fails, put a set of headphones into the emulated output and keep the amp on standby. It has a great sounding gain channel but it also has a very good clean channel. With its own gain control it can get a classic crunch that's made Marshall what it is but also on that clean channel is some very sweet tones, tones that combined with the classic tones that can b found the ultra gain channel and the high gain tones of today make this one very versatile amp. This is truly one amp that can do it all. And well.

I put a creamback M65 in my DSl 40cr and it sounds Amazing . Eliminated all of the fizz and harshness and made the red channel sound amazing. The stock v type was a big improvement over the 70/80 that the original DSL 40 had but I still found it slightly harsh and a bit fizzy in the top end but the creamback 65 cured that. Update from 4 months ago: I bought the 40c before I knew the cr was just coming out, and I was very disheartened to see how much better in this video Rob & Lee like the 40cr, compared to the 40c. So, I couldn't afford to do anything about it, except purchase and install the Creamback speaker everybody on youtube suggested. What an unbelievable difference, for the better, just swapping speakers did or the 40c! I'm in love all over again. One of my band brother works at Guitar Center and had to listen to the 40c demoed on the floor for years and years, and he absolutely loves my new tone and agrees that with doing just that one modification, significantly improved the already decent sounding 40c towards an even better classic Marshall sound. I already had a MXR 10 band EQ, and now my old 40c is just freaking awesome. And, I'm still about $125 richer than paying the new higher price for the 40cr. Now, if I find out that it's a very simple mod to add a dedicated Master Volume knob (which I'm kind of doing now with the MXR in the effects loop), then I'll be more than satisfied and will completely stop beating myself up over all this...lol.

All of the DSL combos have an auxiliary input which you can plug your phone or laptop into (as long as that has a headphone jack!) and play to a backing track, but only the DSL1 has the emulated output be the same size as that. From the DSL5 onwards, the emulated output *is* on a quarter-inch socket.

The Tone Shift didn't seem to work as well as with older DSLs. I have a JCM 2000 50 watt. The Tone Shift acts as a built-in variac. Hit the button and the volume lowers and the mids drop just enough to give the amp a semblance of the "Brown Sound." When I got my 200 re-tubed the guy who does my repairs (also makes his own amps - Sommatone Amps, and yes they are INCREDIBLE) explained how the quality of the old JCM 2000s was really variable. But, he said, I lucked up and got a really, really good one. I say that so everyone knows all the volume, tone (including reverb), and channel functions are properly sensitive and, with a small re-dialing effect the overall tone you're seeking to achieve. These new models sound good (I don't have the too crisp highs Rob was talking about) but the bass sounds much the same as mine (almost forgot, it's a 2004 model), and the Tone Shift on that 40 watt doesn't seem to have as much effect as it's supposed to have. Maybe these differences are the result of the JCM 2000 overall quality variability that persists to today. Thanks again guys for another quality video!

I took Phillip McKinght's and Johan Segeborn's advice and got the DSL20CR. The clean is what blows my mind, totally boutique, and loves pedals. The ultra gain is fine too. it's a great smaller practice amp, and can be mic'd. The only drawback is the line out/headphone jack sorta sucks. But not a deal buster, the tone for your money is excellent!

That's a shame that the output isn't quite doing it for u. I've got a 20C and am pretty happy with it but mine serves a different purpose coz I'm mostly playing at home now. Maybe the 40 might b better.

Would have loved to see the DSL1 head into a 2x12 and skip the combo

I think of the new DSL as an affordable JCM-esque range and the Origin as the same for SLP. In essence Marshall tones can be reached again. Makes me happy. The 40CR actually sounded fantastic through the chug

Origin is great but you need a Tube Screamer to fully use it

Presence on max! Whenever I've tried an AMP that has a presence knob, it always sounds best on max

About the 40: Being more of a buying second hand older stuff guy. I'm normally biased. But I owned a DSL40c new when they first came out and after sticking in a better speaker (swamp thang) it was a favorite of my stable for the classic rock and old metal stuff. Marshall did the right thing putting a better speaker and footswitchable EVERYTHING on it. Not much of a tone difference other than what the speaker gives. But it didn't need it. Sold the 40, still have a Dsl5. Thanks Marshall for realizing what a great middle of the road priced product the DSL's are

vs new Blues Junior if you are going to complete the set

I think the OR15 sounds better for distortion but has only one channel and very little headroom. It depends on whether you want versatility or just a very good drive channel.
