This Bakkie might be a good competitor when comparing high spec models, however, this bakkie (and the Isuzu) falls short when comparing the base models. I sat in the 1.9 Diesel and refused to even take it for a test drive after I started it as the motor sounds more tractor like compared to my 2.2 diesel ranger which instantly indicated that it is inferior to my Ranger. Save for the airbag count, the base model Mazda had no nice feature over my 2016 2.2 XL Ranger (which is still today almost R100 000.00 cheaper than the Mazda 1.9 Diesel) and the Ranger, despite being an older Bakkie, drives better and the 2.2 Diesel is more powerful than the 1.9. This is where Mazda dropped the ball to be honest. You can also note cost cutting when looking at the load bay. The top Rangers all have lights, hooks, rubber, 12V plugs with an easy lift tail gate. The Mazda does not offer this despite the next Ranger even offering a work station with a multi plug. The point is, the BT 50 should be cheaper or it needs a spec increase.

Very handsome bakkie, but I can't for the life of me understand how Mazda priced it. The Individual is priced almost on par with the Isuzu V-cross. Both vehicles are identical mechanically but the Isuzu comes with leather seats, an extra airbag, adaptive cruise control, a body kit and a host of active safety features all of which the Mazda lacks. I don't see Mazda selling any, not because they're bad but because you can have an identical, similarly specced Isuzu dmax LSE for R90 000 less.

I have to say that I’m very happy for Mazda to have gone with Isuzu but I completely disagree with the comments about the interior. Cloth seats are much more comfortable than leather and I think if Mazda fitted a Canvas set as a “free option” the lack of leather will be easily overlooked especially since most owners will want it to look macho.. as for the ride, fit some aftermarket shocks and springs. But again Mazda SA should try offer that as an option.

Cool bakkie. Actually prefer cloth seats over leather. I know leather is wipable but cloth seats don't need to be heated or cooled to be comfortable and unless the leather is 80s Mercedes quality cloth seats last longer too. Ride would be more of an issue for me though.
