I bought a Suzuki Samari in 1987... and this car looks like a direct descendant. It only had 48 HP & it could only go over 65 mph if I was going downhill; but it was my favorite go anywhere car for it could do u-turns in a narrow street, go off-roading where larger Jeeps could not fit; and it was totally reliable in hot or cold weather. Enjoyed your review as always!

All Jimnys are cute. Small size, ability, price, unique, fun, transmission choice - all good. Typically Land Rover shot themselves in the foot by discontinuing the Defender and stalling 68 years of hard-fought heritage. G-Wagen, Land-Cruiser, Wrangler - now Jimny - did the right thing: they developed their cars and heritage. This Jimny shows where Series III/Defender could have been...! (Yes, I know the Defender was "hand-built" which was its downfall, but never the less!). Thanks Thomas.

Same concept as a Land Rover, except LR was 1948, Jimny 1970: less towing capability and carrying capacity, but handier, neater and a lot less expensive... Great review.
@BelloBudo0076 жыл бұрын
I'm a 4x4 fan who also lives in the countryside and surrounded by forests, dirt roads, river crossings, etc, and I love it. However, I think I understand why Land Rover (and others) went away from serious 4x4 off road vehicles. IMHO it all comes down to market forces and what will sell the most. They believe a softer AWD vehicle is the way of the future, and maybe they are right. I can see that their market share will increase more with AWD than with 4x4.
@clangerbasher6 жыл бұрын
It really is question of purpose. The Land Rover was a 'load lugger'. The Jimny is a person mover. You can see the same difference when you compare the original Series 1 LR with the ex-military Jeep of the same period. The former is more heavily constructed (box chassis) why the latter has lighter open channel. I think the new Jimny looks great. :)
@pow19836 жыл бұрын
Defenders are still available new by Land Rover but at a high premium, built by their new classic division. I think they can build no more than 3000 per year worldwide.

My first car ever was a yellow LJ80 with soft top and soft doors, that was back in the 80's. I drive it without the top and without the doors and it was the coolest thing I ever had. I remember to arrive at the beach, stop where the sand begins, engage the low 4x4 and take it to that desert spot where no one could get. Oh what magic days I spend with my girlfriend at the time... What a glorious time. After that I had several cabrios, I love cabrios, but none of them was quite the same. Sure they were (and are) best cars and fast, that's easy, but that feeling of driving the coolest thing on road I never had again. I hope they make a cabrio so I can buy one to give my kids and steal it now and then. :)

I saw a mid 2000s Jimny yesterday. What would that get on the current crash test rating? -5 stars? We need to remember that so many older cars on our roads are absolute death traps compared to any modern car.
@BJ40films6 жыл бұрын
The Jimny only got 3 stars because of the lack of some of the so called safety systems on the base model. I don't think that old cars are death traps, well, maybe they are, but that's not their fault. Okey, modern cars may have a better crash zone and airbags, that's for sure, but they are incredibly heavy compaired with the cars from the 90's and 80's. There are quite a lot older cars on the road, that's for sure, but why it it that they are unsafe? Well, I think because all the newer cars are heavy. And not a bit heavy, 1400 - 1600kg is just normal these days. Older smaller cars well, they have a weight of like 1000kg or less. The heavier, the more difficult to slow down. What happens when you hit a light car with a big heavy modern vehicle? You'll just crush it. We are talking about less fuel consumption and more safety, and what do we do? We make cars bigger, heavier, put tiny windows in it, give them 'good looking' interiors that weighs a ton, put big distracting toutchscreens in them etc. I think we aren't making cars more safe this way, okey, maybe for the driver of that vehicle, but not for the others on the road. People just need to use their mind when driving. Overtaking doesn't save you a ton of time for example. I think you only need a few things to make cars more safe. Bigger windows, lower overall weight, no entertainment unit and good seats. I think that's it. Or in other words: get a Honda Civic from 1984, put some airbags and some good seats in it and you're done. But yeah, this is just my opinion.
@EinkOLED6 жыл бұрын
As a motorcyclist, I'm just thankful my car has any airbags. My driving skills prevent me from having an accident.

The affordable G-Class. Top points to Suzuki for sticking with it's humble and rugged beginnings for the bodywork/chassis and adding the appropriate modern tech of today. Top preview as always Mr. Thomas.

I love the fact that Suzuki are so brave with their design. They have not made some boring box and give it an SUV sticker! It’s fresh, fun, youthful and downright stylish. I'm a huge fan of the Jimny. Its truly a capable 4x4. It punches above its size when it comes to off-roading. And I love the looks. The design might look similar to the G-Wagen, but this is just pure coincidence, as the designers went back to the original 70s Suzuki LJ (pre Sierra name) for design inspiration for this Jimny.

Suzuki should look into releasing a 5-door LWB version. Jeep did it for the Wrangler, and the 5-door version has been a great seller for Jeep ever since. In Australia, Suzuki released a LWB ute version of the LJ/Sierra in the late 70s to early 90s called "Stockman". And it instantly became a classic.

You obviously didn't understand the concept of kei car. Bigger is not always better, unless you still measure in inch, feet, yard, fahrenheit, and play football with hands.
@HammerRocks6 жыл бұрын
Cipta Pradja Tsk tsk tsk. I just smile to myself when people assume and get it all wrong. Cipta Pradja you're a case in point. I do know about Kei cars. But I also know about the Sierra/Jimny history. Do you? Because if you did, you wouldn't have posted such an ignorant comment. The original LJ10 might have started as a Kei car for Japan only, but soon grew beyond that with export versions having an engine bigger than the 660cc Kei car engine max limit. Plus if you've read my original comment properly, you'd have read that I've pointed out that Suzuki already produced a LWB version of the Sierra (in the 80s/90s) which took it outside the Kei car class in both engine and dimension size. And finally, based on your comments, you obviously don't know that Australia uses the metric system. We have been since the 60s - before I was even born.

I think they got the exterior styling spot on but a little disappointing by the underwhelming interior and would like to see a couple engines with a little power...maybe the engine out of the Suzuki Sport. A Jimny Sport. Now that would definitely sell. Sporty leather interior some cool matt black colours with red accents. That's money in the bank for Suzuki all day long. You can buy 4 of these for the price of one Merc G Class in the UK, where Merc charges obscene rates for a very old design! I think they will sell well. Surprised at the NCAP rating, but I'm sure Suzi will add plenty of airbags etc for the UK market and given the speed these are driven at it's not going to be a big issue. Only disappointment for me is it's only a four speed auto, so not as smooth probably as could be but then whole concept seems based on being rugged.
