This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new VinFast VF8 electric SUV from the newest car company in the world, VinFast of Vietnam. We couldn’t be more excited to join VinFast to learn more about their new electric vehicles, the VF8 and VF9 and tour the manufacturing plant in Vietnam. We drove the VF8 but hope to also spend some time in the VF9 as well. VinFast is a Vietnamese Automaker that was established in 2017 and although VinFast is new, it is part of a much larger conglomerate, the VinGroup founded in 1993 by Pham Nhat Vuong. The VinGroup focuses on technology, industry, real estate development, resorts, retail and service ranging from healthcare to hospitality. Pham started out selling instant noodles, he sold the company in 2010 to Nestle for $150 million and is currently the wealthiest person in Vietnam. VinFast launched its own cars in Vietnam in 2019 and were based on existing models using BMW architecture. Now the company wants to focus only on electric vehicles and plans to stop producing gas powered vehicles this year. The VF8, a 5-seater SUV and the VF9, a 3-row SUV will hit the North American market towards the end of the year. VinFast builds its EV’s in Vietnam but has plans to open a factory in North Carolina. The VF8 offers up to 471 km/292 miles of range and up to 402 horsepower, it has a starting price of $51,250 CAD/$40,700 USD. The VF9 offers up to 594 km/342 miles of range and up to 402 horsepower with a starting price of $69,750 CAD/$55,500 USD. There is a monthly battery subscription fee with unlimited km for $139 CAD/month for the VF8 and $199 CAD/month for the VF9. A Flexible plan is available for the VF8 it starts at $39 CAD/month for the first 500 km and adds $0.09 per extra km. The VF9 $59 CAD for the first 500 km and add $0.11 per extra km. Vinfast also commits to provide a lifetime battery warranty covering all maintenance and repair costs and will replace the battery for free when charging capacity dips below 70%. Owner of the fixed subscription plan will get these fees for the lifetime of their vehicle and the plan will be automatically transferred to the new owner after the vehicle is sold.

This VF8 is a prototype model so everyone who drove the vehicle for a short time had an instructor with them. We also had a videographer who was getting extra footage for Vietnam Television. We were interviewed by the station earlier in the day and they wanted footage of our in-car driving segment to feature us on their show. They will also be providing the link to our videos, the VF8 review and our lifestyle piece on Vietnam which drops Saturday. Looking forward to sharing it with you, Vietnam is a beautiful place to visit, Zack and I really enjoyed the trip.

Vietnam is on my bucket list. I love the architecture, the landscape, the FOOD and the people. It is pleasantly rewarding to see what they have graced us with. It is an absolutely brilliant debut. Clearly, I am impressed. I think their monthly battery idea is somewhat reasonable. Probably with a flat purchase rate, like everybody else, the price might be an additional $15-25 grand). So the savings and absence of battery degradation concerns may payoff… especially on the used market. After all, I believe the an OEM battery for a Tesla Model S (non-performance models) are over $27,000 American dollars. Time will tell if this pricing model will be adopted or not by the public… or if other manufacturers will consider it in the future. Especially if their batteries are out sourced. Great filming… the thru-vehicle shot was a creative choice. Spectacular scenery. Amazingly wide streets/roads. And…Great watch choice. Thanks for the video.

I am hyped about the VF8 because I got to see one in person! I got to check out the Plus, which makes a way better impression than the model you drove (but I'm glad you went to drive it in person and tell us about it). I live in Oakland, California, next door to Berkeley which has one of the very first Vinfast outlets in all of North America. We are nuts about EV's in California, so they can't make enough--for most models you will be waiting several months. I went to the showroom because my son, who is a car nut, spotted it. They have a VF8 on the floor, and we were able to check everything out. It was a fun experience. I was so impressed that I put down $200 on the spot for a reservation. Some thoughts: The model in this video is the base model but I saw a Plus, which starts around 5K higher...but you want the Plus. Why? - Leather seating in 4 different colors - Hands free trunk (slide your foot under to raise it) - HUGE sunroof that goes all the way to back seats - That's what I remember but there's more... A big deal is being made about the battery monthly fee, but I think it's a good idea. I did the math; over a 5 year loan it's like paying $6k more for the car; but for this car it's still a good deal--and no worry about replacing the battery! My overall impression: It is a freaking beautiful car, and it's a really good fit for my family. I just have a good feeling about this car and about Vinfast; hopefully I'll be rolling up in one before long... If you are able to get to one of the showrooms, check it out!

Great video, team! Nice that you were invited to Vietnam. About the subscription model, I’m not against it, if it essentially means I don’t need to worry about the battery lifetime, or replacement cost and availability. I hang on to my vehicles for a lot of years, and when I read stories about Nissan Leaf owners not being able to replace their used-up battery, I get cold feet. 👍
@andrerodriguez7603
@andrerodriguez7603 Жыл бұрын
Nissan uses active cooling on it’s cars. This degrades the batteries allot faster. I’m not sure the technology on the Vinfast. If it has active cooling and not cooled by heat pump technology. Than it’s essential to lease the battery pack, will definitely degrade faster than other EV maker’s using heat pumps.

I have been following VinFast for the last three years and put down a deposit for the VF9 several months ago before the battery subscription model was communicated to the public. I was one of the early ones and the reservation included a trip for four to Vietnam, a substantial rebate and other goodies. I also went to Square One in Mississauga to see the the VF8 and VF9 in person and was suitably impressed. Upon learning about the battery program I asked for my money back. It’s almost better to consider a PHEV in this case. The subscription cost and the cost to charge the car don’t seem to add for me in terms of long term saving over an ICE vehicle. I do however acknowledge the environmental benefit. To that end I now have a confirmed reservation for the FISKER Pear. Thank you.

How funny! I first read about VinFast this afternoon -- and now I'm seeing your review! One possible + in my mind to the battery lease is that it can be good IF they swap out better batteries (like range etc) down the road. There's a lot of development going on battery-wise so one hold back for me is possibly waiting for faster-charge, larger capacity/range batteries.

Vietnam looks nice and the car looks good. But when I saw the details of the battery subscription...it is expensive! If I'm paying for the car, I don't want additional variable cost on the /km battery cost or expensive monthly cost. I'd rather have a gas SUV knowing that I don't pay for additional car costs if I'm not using it.
@lpdirv
@lpdirv Жыл бұрын
The thing to consider with this pricing model, is the savings over the gas model. Basically my model 3 is a 19 at 54k$. I always tell uber riders that its a 34k car with a 20k battery. A lot of people that could afford a 34k car and a payment of say 212$ a month for the battery rent, could justify the car. Less risk as well. Thats $360/month for the car at 5% over 10 years plus 212/month for the battery. It’s a very interesting proposition. Lets see how it works out.

@@lpdirv I think Vinfast wants to compare it to Tesla. But I doubt consumers think that way...at least I don't. The price point they are moving into is very close to cost competitive EVs like EV6, Ioniq 5, BZ4X and ID4. These cars will most likely have higher perceived value because of their brand reputation and reliability. Even though they say it's luxury, people won't buy vinfast that easily too. Just look at how long Genesis as a brand formed their reputation to the market...Anyway, that's just my thought as a potential EV buyer.

The time to recover the additional cost of an electric vehicle over an ICE is forever. Additionally, the cost of electricity is extremely variable from region to region. And if that wasn't enough, the time to charge batteries is quite long, better lodge where you recharge. The better batteries take longer to charge. The quality of the quick charge batteries is subpar. An electric vehicles seem like a smart choice, but financially are anything but.

As someone who lives I'm VN, I'm glad to see them moving Vinfast abroad. Their motorbikes and cars always look really nice and I'm glad to see an English review for it. I think they will slowly make it up a percentage of the car market. The quality is really nice for both cars and motorbikes. On the motorbikes, you can purchase the battery or rent them at 350k or about 15$ a month with unlimited changouts at their stations. If they can transfer that model and bring their bikes to the west, I think it would also have moderate success, especially considering the current cost of gas.

So basically the price does not include a warranty for the battery, and you are paying a month fee to buy a lifetime, unlimited km warranty for the battery. Is the cost of the battery itself included in the price of the vehicle? Lol Probably a hard sell for most private buyers, but like you said, fleets buyers might like this model.

Glad to see you got invited to Vietnam to experience the VinFast new EV and see the country and their culture, looking forward to see more videos of the food & scenery. Leasing the battery makes sense for those who drives a lot. We have a 2018 Tesla Model 3 with 82,000 km only lost 4% battery degradation which is hardly anything as we mostly charged at home between 80% to 90% that will make the battery last a long time. People always over worry of the battery life span instead of getting more knowledge on how to charge the battery. I find the most important thing of buying an EV vehicle is the support of charging stations for the long road trip which a lot of manufacturers are lacking of that will make people think twice before buying.

I agree the car looks great, looks well built, and well designed actually on camera. I’m really nterested and seeing the smaller models when they come out. I’m sure they’ll be sharp looking cars. Living on the EC of the US, I’ll be able to hear how the “battery subscription” , idea works here down the line. Plus of course along with “our great neighbors up north”. How they will hold up on real world US/Canada roads, and our (four) season climates etc. They mention the subscription keeps the initial purchase cost down? I’ll need to hear more with that idea too. Before considering one as a second vehicle. My primary car is a Toyota Hybrid, I have no worries obviously. Not all electric, yes, but…. Ok VinFast looks like you’ve done your homework really well, and have a great looking product. Looking forward to seeing how you do.

I would want to pay at least $10k maybe even $12k less than similar competition due to the the monthly fee. In the US that slots the base model in at just over $50k which is fair but no bargain IMO.

looks like a fantastic trip..hope you enjoyed...must of been a bit off putting having the passengers in the back seat...hmm..ok..vehicle does look quite nice..and interior on par for the price point..no bottom floor in passenger area??why??exterior does look very nice..like the lines and seems to be very functional..now the battery deal....am very confused...a vehicle usually come with at least a base powerplant included in cost...so why the separate pricing?just very odd...although that flex plan would likely be something to do the math on if the time came...glad you enjoyed the trip,,will tune in for the tour video next..enjoy😊

I don't understand the battery subscription model. So I need to pay $140/month to drive the car that I paid for, and in exchange, they will replace the battery that is already supposed to be under warranty. Also the $51250 starting price excludes ADAS (unsure if it's lane keep assist etc. or the "enhanced autopilot package"). ID4, bz4x, IONIQ 5 and the Mach-E all start around that price and don't require a battery subscription. On top of this, it's a brand we have never heard of (aside from an ad that I have been seeing in a mall in Montreal for a year at this point), unsure how they are going to sell this.

The battery subscription program sounds a bit different away from what is so far not normal and known. However it is an interesting option as it brings down the price of the car! I am heavily impressed with the way they are aggressively marketing the car right to beat many luxury brands at a relatively affordable price.

I looked at the Vinfast a few weeks ago, I initially liked the idea of a subscription but now I'm not sure. They can raise the price anytime and you have no other options then pay it, and I think at $50k CAD it's too expensive with a subscription. Also don't want to travel 8 hours roundtrip to Vancouver to pick it up and getting it serviced annually, only a few Vinfast stores in Canada.

@Mykhaylo Dykusha there will be a battery and earth minerals crisis starting in 2 to 3 years, will last till around 2035-40, with new mines opening and new battery tech coming out, not just headline catching “some university made a breakthrough” kind of batteries. So if you’re asking about the actual 10 years, yes it makes sense. In 20 years it probably won’t, but batteries themselves won’t be much more popular than today, which is less than 1% of all driven cars on earth.

I hope the trip to Vietnam was an excelent opportunity to see not only the company but also beautiful places. Congrats for making such a long journey. I saw these cars exposed în mall. I knew that these cars are EV but otherwise they are looking like ICE cars. The design is not taking into account the aerodynamic shape typical for the actual EV. The italian designer probably used his work since ICE times. The cars look Ok, but nothing to say Uau ! The price would be probably the main reason to buy these cars. If the strategy with that subscription will be a success. But considering that this producer is completely new......the price will need to be very small. While we are not sure about the success of new names coming with very atractive cars ,or new names of well established producers like Genesis what to expect from this new producer from Vietnam ? Clearly they will need to work a lot for success .

I'm comfortable with the Battery Subscription model. It's just math after all - and depends on ones own personal situation. Maybe it works for you, maybe it doesn't. In my use- case scenario - I'd get the Flexible choice, as I drive very little (750km/mo), but still like a nice vehicle when I do. This means I'll pay $15-20k less than a comparable EV upfront (with battery included). Then I pay $85/mo while I own it. In four years (my average keep) I'll have only spent $4k for the battery - a lot less than $15-20k, even when factoring in depreciation. Plus, the next owner receives all remaining original warranty plus unlimited battery warranty. How great is that? It's an interesting concept. I hope it catches on. However, I know most people don't understand leases as well as they could, let alone one related solely to the battery. Yikes. It's a big ask Vinfast. Good luck.
