The one thing that would have taken the bosses from fine but poorly realized to engaging is a proper stamina gauge. You shouldn’t be able to spam huge I frame dodge rolls every five seconds. There should be times where you have to seek cover like the tree in the first arena, manually dodge attacks by foot, and avoid dodge rolling lest you tire yourself out. Additionally, having one final battle phase right before you throw the final balm with boosted stats would have really helped them feel more like Pokémon bosses. Oh, and utilizing the mechanic where Pokémon can gang up on you would be cool so long as they kept it fair. Otherwise, I’m excited to play and think they’re a step in the right direction. At the very least I can’t see myself getting bored.

It would risk the health of a Pokémon you could have potentially used later in battle. Shit, I seriously wish this game had just a little more time in the oven! It could have gone from almost sorta great to amazing!

The base game technically does have potential to really be a great game with a few tweaks and such. I’ll give credit, these noble fights are an interesting idea (to an extent it even gives pokepark 2 boss battle vibes) though it would of benefited from giving the player more options beyond just chucking stuff at the noble pokemon. Pokepark 2 gave various attacking options and while in that game your playing as pokemon, they could of still pulled something for a human character to make the battle with them more interesting and varied. Other than that, this is a huge step up from the mediocrity from SWSH and the bug filled travesty thats BDSP and id even say its the best 3d Pokémon game in a long while since battle revolution and gale of darkness.

All I can think of is a Kingdom Hearts 2 system for summoning pokemon and using their moves, just keep the player as vulnerable during them so there’s a sense of danger still (and of course let them dodge). I get they want to introduce items to use as a trainer too to vary gameplay, but it looks like the player can just use those and beat the pokemon anyway.

its not even close monster hunter man. its a 3rd person shooter without all the things that make a 3rd person shooter fun aside from the camera and shooting something. monster hunter has a complex combat system, monsters with patterns to learn and if you aren't playing rise deliberate action at the forefront of EVERYTHING, even moreso for pre world and increasing the further back you go. MH sees you preparing, using resources, learning patterns over the course of a long hunt and mastering weapons and building armor sets with a variety of skills throughout the game. I'd say SWSH is bad but this isn't even a game worth playing combat wise. its literally, have the best roll imaginable, with the easies punches thrown with the most boring method of attack and even if you choose to do nothing the monster WILL STUN IT'S SELF to open it to take big damage.

I know you are sarcastic but in the event you aren't.... {INHALES} No, not even close. see you got your soulborne bosses where you have to learn and get good to win, and on the otherside you got your early monster hunter fights where you either have to be god or be very prepared and good to succeed. key thing to both of these is deliberate action in combat. your attacks are slow, your rolls can be punished, and enemies are designed to play off this and your aggression and passivity. you must act, but you must be cautious. the more you master the more you can exploit, punish and safer you will be. but all action has drawbacks and you must learn the right time. after that you got a game like monster hunter rise where items might as well be endless, preparation doesn't matter, each hit you take doesn't matter and monsters are so squishy and you have so many safe out options that you almost never get comboed into something, get punished for overextending and if you did the punishment is so low you won't feel it. but what rise still has is a deep and complex combat system. something the above games also had. various systems, skills, abilities, weapons, and defensive actions to learn master and enjoy. then you have this. you get the lack of punishment, but even easier means of saying safe, taking action isn't required because the boss will stun itself and let you use your pokemon which should be able to fight the boss well enough to stun it and then you can take some free safe damage before running away with an overly safe roll. and said attack is tossing the same bag only difference is what type. there is no deliberate action, there is not need for action, there is no risk required, and there is no complexity in this combat. it is far and away from darksouls or any good 3d action game. I'd closer compare it to a 3rd person shooter but the lack of cover mechanics, enemy placement and well in general 3rd and first person shooters not being a good hallmark for bosses based in the combat system itself (mainly relying on puzzles and other mechanics to hold fights through) it even fails there. It's a bare bones excuse to say pokemon legends arceus is an action game, when considering it so would be an insult to every other developer of an action game, or any game with a combat system who puts an ounce of thought into the complexity and importance of player choice during said encounters. the only genuine aspect of the action aspect is to make traversal not a complete bore, and make the overworld have a sense of liveliness to it. in all other aspects its better of being a turnbased game like the rest and only use the overworld for starting it ALA monster hunter stories. A game that has an overworld for exploration and traversal purposes and put monsters into it for the sake of well the world needs them somewhere for you to track down and fight. but had the game been top down and monsters put on walk cycles and detection AI it would lose nothing except the visual medium of 3d. same with pokemon legends arceus.

could do something like monster hunter world, where you track down the noble across its land and engage it in pokemon fights or throw balms at it, the balms could also do different things, there could be the damaging one like already in the game, but there could also be support balms, like one where it would slow down and stop attacking for a lil while, a balm which would poison it, one which would reduce the damage dealt by it. each pokemon could be tracked through its behaviour and footprints, which would make sense, since you are part of the survey corps, u should know the behaviour of pokemon your surveying. for example, klevor would cut down trees and tall grass so the player would look for areas which had cut down trees, arcanine would spread lava and fire everywhere, electrode would crush the land and leave huge tracks, liligant would attract other pokemon with its singing so follow other pokemon or listen carefully for her singing, avalugg is giant so ya cant really miss him. also the noble pokemon could have commanded lesser pokemon to fight you or support it, like electrode making voltorbs tackle and self destruct on u etc. and could have added weakpoints to the pokemon to make it less repetative, like for kleavor its those skinny arms and head, liligant her head, voltorb its eyes, arcanine its horn, and avalugg its mouth. I know that this is prolly really hard to program and all, but they could have atleast made different balms for u to use, that would have made these "boss fights" alot better already

There's uh... Not a lot going on. They couldn't implement a way to involve riding your Pokemon during these battles or anything to spice it up? Or here's a better idea. Remember in Pokemon Ranger Guardian Signs where you could occasionally summon friend Pokemon during battle to do some damage? Why not that? Have a set move that your Pokemon will do and then just have it on a cooldown depending on how powerful it is. If the Pokemon gets hit while it's using their move it gets interrupted and the cooldown is even longer.

You can still use your Pokemon in these Nobel Pokemon battles? There are still normal trainer battles in the game, wild Pokemon battles are still a thing so I don't get why you're complaining. Instead of always having to start a battle to catch a Pokemon, you now have more options. If you just wanted to use your Pokemon in every battle, you can always play literally all of the mainline games. I don't get what's the problem.

this game is a missed opportunity. It could have been a lot better, but the battles seem a bit too repetitive and there just isn't much going for it (they could have implemented some heavy weapons rather than simply throwing balms, for example), but I like how the game punishes and surprises players with some cheeky mechanics, such as overlevelled alphas and some rather unpredictable attacking methods. It's a stepup from other games and gamefreak is heading in the right direction, but a lot leaves to be desired.

They never try to be innovative because their previous attempts to step away from the same formula (Black/White, Sun/Moon, and now this) always get blasted with criticism from the fanbase who only want the same boring formula.

So since this game is, surprise, a hot button topic right now let's give my own useless thoughts on it. It is absolutely better than SWSH and BDSP... But, like, y'know. _That's not a high bar to clear._ Those games were the literal bottom of the barrel. The game is absolutely trying not to suck. I can see the efforts made to try and be better. But it still has the air of compromise hanging over it like a bad smell. It looks undercooked (graphics look mediocre, overworld is empty and lifeless), but the mechanics are _trying_ to be engaging. The game is trying to be engaging with its difficulty and story, and y'know what? Good on those lads for trying. It just absolutely needed more time in the oven. But no, papa pokemon company demands a release for the merchandise driven franchise, so the game gets to come out half cooked. It's a step in the right direction. I'll give it this. _But this is not enough._ Until these games get halfway tolerable development times, half baked is going to be the name of the game. Yet considering all the apologists and idiots fighting tooth and nail over this... Like usual... That's never gonna happen. Game is a solid 7/10 in a vacuum.
