There are plenty of channels that would encourage people into the hobby without any warning of things that could go wrong. As a suggestion for a garden pond, i think Matt (fish shop Matt Britain) said the "Blagdon" range would be available in Australia (like his wildlife pond with the steps). Just a thought. Your Iceberg Electric Blue is absolutely stunning! They're my favorite fish and i've had many over the years, and besides their brilliant colors - i really love how varied their personalities can be. Their usually thought of as being docile mid-sized Haps, and though most ive had have fit that description, i have had two who were hyper-dominant tank bosses. Including one that was the biggest Fryeri Ive ever seen at 8.5 inches, (measured when he finally passed away), who was king of a big tank that was full of at the time a bunch of fully grown, significantly larger, and usually much more aggressive haps likes Fuscos, Champs, Venustus, and Tyranochromis. I really miss that old dude. Anyways, great tanks

Not fish related but sometimes when a house is built, some builders don't add roof insulation in the garage section which also contributes to the increased temperatures so may also want to check that outbas well.

Thanks for sharing your hobby with us. I use a pump system also, but only have one and do not leave it in the tank. I use it for each of my 7 tanks and just run scalding water through the system between water changes. I only do one water change a day and have some on biweekly and some on weekly. I'm getting older and find this easy to handle. Btw, each w/c only takes 30mins.

I can understand you not liking the water changes. One thing I did for my tanks who were all on the same stand (like your old ones are) is setup a plastic storage bin with a pump and pvc tubing and on each "level" I setup a cut-off valve. So I can fill either 1 to all my tanks at one time.

Hi kaity Another great video,loved the update! it's a shame not everything is going the way you would like.rspecially the Florida tank,it started off looking so Nice. I think you might be right about the high temperatures in your garage being the problem. I used to have the same issue with high water teperetures in my tank but i was able to fix it by using cooling fans. (like the ones shown in that video you made with nigel) they're not that expensive and they can be connected to a thermostat so they switch on and off automatically.i can also relate to the issues you're having with your pond.lots of hair algae!😕and birds eating my fish.just recently i've seen a Kingfisher dive into my pond and catch a fish. But herons are the worst,they keep coming back until there is not a fish left!! I'm sure you Will find a way to solve everything(especially now that there is a dose of good karma coming your way for saving that baby possum😂😂) and i'm looking forward to watch the videos on how you do it!😊

Awsome video! Was cool seeing an update on all your aquariums, sorry to hear about all the issues with the rack systems and losing the fry. Hopefully youll get some more fry and will be able to try again with them! I guess a silver lining to that incident is it'll give you a blank slate to try some new ideas with those tanks 😊 If you're thinking about ponds, have a flick through the channel Fish with Carl, he has a really cool koi pond in his back garden with a massive glass viewing window for seeing the fish though! Think you'll find that one of interest for a couple of ideas you could try.

@Kaityscichlids Ah nice! It's a pretty good channel, definitely give it a watch! That's always a good thing, to try new things! I don't know if you can get them in Australia, but have you thought about making something like a mudskipper aquarium? They'd be something different to do, and you might be able to use one of those smaller tanks for that. You could even have a go building a blennie aquarium with lots of rocks and scape it so it looks a bit like a harbour wall with a drop-off on one side, and some leafy plants that look like seaweed growing out of the rocks?

Hi Kaity. I follow Brady Brandwood, specifically for the Leon the Lobster series (great series). He has a video called building a DIY aquarium chiller. I've done this and it works for a quarter of the price of an aquarium chiller.

Hey so your rack system I actually copied it last week and thank you so much for that it was a great help as I’m new to the hobby of fish keeping, just with the water change system what I was thinking is instead of running a pump on each tank what if you get a Polly pipe tap from bunnings and put it in the desired water change level and then do that for every tank with a main pump in the water bin that can pull and pump water? Would that not be a cheaper but also look better? You can run Polly piping along the back of the tank or pvc and or the clear tubing and still use Polly pipe connections as long as you do it snug fit with glue in pvc? You could obviously use pvc connections but to me they are big and bulky, iv never dabbled into drilling tanks yet as I’m new but for a overflow system like you do in hydroponics but that seems like so much extra steps for the same result, if you could let me know if this would work

i always use to double dose my wc for chlorine as you dont know if unity water has done maintenance in your area and have increased the chlorine amount

For a pond, space permitting- you could always repurpose an old bath tub. More water, more stable, can have more fish and could potentially attract frogs, while toads would be unlikely to be able to climb in. A lot of possibilities with something that size.

Are your using RO water in your cichlid fish tank ? Water looks Cristal clear. My tap water contains high nitrates of about 20ppm & I am confused what should I do to lower that as whenever I test my aquarium water I am getting nitrates of 80ppm . Rest all parameters are good only nitrates are always high

How do you stop the water change pumps from continuing to siphon after you switch them off? Do you just put them in the tank when you do want to water change? Personally I like the idea of a permanent drain plumbed in to the rack, where you can set it up to have an overflow into the drain, so you just pipe new water into the tanks and the draining does the rest itself - kind of like Planted Aquarias setup from your '106 Aquariums FULL of Nano Fish and Plants - Store Tour' video. I don't think I'll go that far in this hobby though, but the techie/geek in me likes the idea of doing it just for fun.

50+ years keeping fish and I always tell people... they kind of die as you put it. They fight or eat each other or die of old age or a power outage kills them but when you buy them know they will kind of die. I suggest to always go 100 gallons or bigger as it's more stable. My tank has a bio system (designed for salt water that works fine for fresh water except for the skimmer) that uses gravity drop and pump return. It has a mechanical prefilter that I use floss in and a quick change takes 2m without interrupting it's cycle. A heater rated for a slightly smaller tank works perfect because it's in the flow. You can also add a sterilizer if needed. Monster fish tend to wreak havoc on anything inside the tank including each other. I once had to pull the Jack Dempsey out of the mouth of a Managuense and gave it a spanking. With a few plants the only maintenance is periodic water changes using untreated tap water that has never led to a problem and the quick change of the filter floss as needed. I love to tell people that my filter is bigger than their fish tank. I cut a drop floor into the wooden stand do you make the filter fit then made one of the front panels open (although it is not apparent) with one of the two tiny doors by adding hidden hinges for true access. I recently got a large horse trough and now I have a pond and net as I have visiting raccoon. My suggestion for the tanks in your garage is to connect them all and add a large sump. Get that garage setup to be of adequate size and you will not deal with fluctuations. If possible connect it to a pond. As a retired architect I can't tell you that your work on the garage door is just the beginning. In California garages are typically not finished in drywall and very hot. It is possible that someone who does not understand architecture has done the drywall in your garage and it was done incorrectly. The habitable or occupied spaces in a structure are insulated and the roof or attic is vented. You need to verify that this was all done correctly and the venting is still operable. If everything is done correctly then there are several things you can do to keep the space cool in hot weather. They include increasing the rating for the insulation and the addition of a attic fan on a thermostat. You can also add thermal Mass. Do you have any lake Victoria fish or possibly Boulengerochromis microlepis? Do you plan to go swim in lake Tanganyika and Malawi? I always dreamed of swiming with the red bellies and Arowana in the big river or swimming in lake Victoria. My dream home is a atrium design with the center pond. You can use inverted fish tanks in a pond instead of viewing windows. I do not understand this trend of aquariums with no lids or tops or the obsession with plants. I do not understand having the water level below the trim so the lighting hits you in the eyes. It's not sick lids or pleco or Al Gee. Say it plecostomus. It's ahh not ohh. My fish ate your dingo!

Read the ingredients on your fish food it's the same as dog or cat food and much cheaper. Supplementing it with the tasty bits (like live rats) will bring out your color and keep your fish happy.

Redo tanks with inch of soil and cap with 2 inches or more of sand. Fill with ton of plants. Add a sponge filter. Never change water just top off. Feed every other day. I have great results this way!

I would not recommend pre formed ponds. It is really hard to manage the ecosystem with such a small body of water outside. I would recommend contacting a CAC and getting a aquascape pond installed. The smallest I would go is a 8x10 with tons of rocks and plants.

Also with smalle rtanks i find having a wet/dry vacum cleaner is a god send for gutting out an old tank rready for a new setup.

I have about 25 fish aquariums from 10 gallons to 150 gallons in my 8' x 20' fish room. I breed fish in the fish room. I find that it is better for me to do each tank separately so that I spend the time to examine everything an make changes right away. If you balance the amount of fish, food, and plants in each aquarium you can lengthen the time for water changes. Tracking water quality with test strip will allow you a good plan for maintenance. My aquariums take about 1 month to reach 80 ppm and need cleaning and water change. So aquariums are more often because they have a lager bio load. The best tip is to test your water every day for a week, then go to each week. When the ppm gets to 80, then do maintenance. If you just pick an arbitrary time period, you could be doing more work then necessary and making this hobby seem like work. i siphon and gravel vac into a trash can on casters. it takes me 8 hours to do all my aquariums by hand. I guess I rambled on long enough.😅
