Can't believe out of the millions of videos, I clicked on yours! I was bored this weekend and ended up taking your class on watercolor potraits with all the fun color! Which was EXCELLENT by the way. Definitely a challenge but loved the result! Too funny I happened upon this video looking for a recommendation on DS reds. How cool! Subbed and turned my notifications on. Can't wait to check out more of your content!

Definitely show your blues. A while ago, I ordered a set of Schminke Horadam from Wet Paint in Minnesota. I've swatched them out and the colors are nice although several of them are kind of weak compared with the Daniel Smith paints that I usually use. However, it might not be a fair comparison since I do not have the equivalent pigment numbers in my Daniel Smith collection. But, I can take the swatches down to a local store here that does sell some Daniel Smith watercolors and can match many of the pigment numbers. There are two blues in the Schminke set. In my Daniel Smith collection, I've kind of lost count of how many blues I have; but, there is at least 4 or 5.

Wow, those are a lot of blues! I find that a variety in blues is actually a good idea. It can really influence the color harmony. The difference is really significant between blues that have yellow in them, or blues that have more red in them (: Will soon make one showing my blues (I have A LOT of this).

I know, this video was made in 2017, when schmincke had released new colours and expanded their standart asortment of paints to 140 pc. So it could be, you already had the new paint colours in mind. Do you still think, they have too little of red selection? I am rather astonished, that they even added those brilliant colours, that have no lightfastness, just because this are fashionable colours, that are wanted by some. it is unusual for a traditional company like schmincke to do that. I thought, these, the perylene line, the new quinacridone colours, contain a lot of red shades. (although, funny, that now, where there are mor reds available (for me) I rather love the reds, that had been there for longer, even more. intesting. I guess, because I got to play with them. not sure. at first I liked the bright reds by white nights. but because I didn't like much anything else, I didn't use those. I must have learned somehow to differentiate some reds and how to apply them intense, if needed (I only have four and one is actualyl calld magenta). I do more landscapes or abstrakts.so it might be, a variaty of red is not that important to me now :-) even I don't know :-D

awesome collections of reds, I tend to use other reds as opposed to cadmium as I find them a little strong in mixes. The best PR101 i've ever found is from Pruche.

+Helen D Oh that's a good question! I'll try and do a VS video (: From my experience the Indian yellow leans more towards orange than new Gamboge. It seems to have more red in it.

Interesting... our red preferences are completely different! And by different I mean different pigments altogether,. The only one we have in common is the PV19 Quin. Rose (different brand though). I am also very fond of PR255, - haven't added it to my collection yet, as it's pretty similar in hue to my PR242.
@LironYan
@LironYan 6 жыл бұрын
Sometimes they can be really similar 😉 So I barely worry about specific colors anymore. I look at the temperature, if anything, and try using a limited palette 😁 But I do like useful paints (large variety of possible values etc, so PV19 / Quin. Rose is a great one!)
@palmirafarkash1492
@palmirafarkash1492 6 жыл бұрын
Liron Yanconsky The temperature thing is exactly right. Over time I also found that in hues many colors across brands are comparable, but is very different is the paint texture on paper (which of course varies with different papers) and that's what draws me to prefer one color over another. There are many granulating paint for example, but they don't granulate the same way. Even smoother paints vary as some are ground finer then others. In any case, I mostly use PR254 as my primary for mixing, PR177 as cool dark red and a lightfast substitute to the fugitive Alizarin Crimson and PR209 as a coral red. In the pink reds variety there's of course my trusty Quin Rose PV19, and my magenta is PR122 (I found it mixes better then PR202).

+Eztli Tenoch I actually didn't like it, or perhaps was biased because I got it together with the English Venetian Red. It felt a little dull for me, and didn't mix well with my other paints (which can also be said to some extent about the Eng Venetian Red).

What is it about oranges?? I don’t like them either. I find them a waste of space on my pallet, especially bcuz they’re so easily mixed! Pyrrol scarlet, quin rose and cad red light are a few of my fav reds, but alas I have more reds than anything else. I paint botanicals and need all the different shades. (Need, lol, More like want)

Haha yes! It's always important to remember that the name is many times chosen for marketing purposes, and doesn't necessarily accurately represents the color itself.

@Nelson Ong while in this case it's true, there are some examples where the same symbol denotes colors belonging to multiple color groups - for example PV19 or PB28. You may check this link to see where earth colors are in the color space: www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/earthc.html
