All of the 1997 tested models were released before NCAP. Most of them were released in the early 90's. There were crash test at that time, but they were not standartized.The video shows how safer the cars have become.But they are two downsides of that - the cars have become much heavier and with a worse visibility, due to smaller side and rear windows and thicker columns.

This is unfortunately a very common misconception. Structural integrity is only half of the story. Too soft and people die from being crushed, too hard and people die from the abrupt acceleration. Cars with very light damage to the cabin usually end up being more deadly than the ones with some cabin intrusion. The trick is to optimize the crumple zone dynamics to ensure the crash takes as long as possible and the passenger acceleration as smooth as possible. This is why cars like the SAAB and the BMW look bad in tests like these but have good survival ratings out on the streets.
@itchyscratch38294 жыл бұрын
Yes, many people are shocked when a modern car's front end looks extremely "caved in" in a relatively minor crash, but that's what they're designed to do, it's all impact energy being absorbed and not transferred to the occupants. Although the cabin safety cell is very strong (none of that A pillar buckling, front door being affected or roof buckling inwards like the 90s cars)
@itchyscratch38294 жыл бұрын
38:15 - The 2017 Punto looks good in terms of cabin strength and lack of intrusion, but the forces inflicted on the occupants is brutal which is why it must have scored so low. Fiat definitely didn't get the balance right there!

@miaugato934 жыл бұрын
Kinda. Granted, in the 90s in Europe, safety was unregulated and sometimes overlooked. You have Volvos ranking 4 stars (first 5 star was Renault Laguna in 2001 so 90s only ranked until 4 star), the Renault Mégane and BMW 5 Series ranking 3 stars. But yes, it is safe to say that, unless cars were made for America (where they tested since 1959), it is kinda unsafe to get a car made before 1997. But just 2 years later you had loads of other cars ranking 3 stars, that had ranked 2 star before, and in 2001 not only the Laguna was the first to rank 5 star but also every vehicle worth its salt was getting 4 star, from the C Class Merc down to the Fiat Punto. Very few of the most popular vehicles from 2001 forwards have ranked less than 4 star, and when they did it was usually an old design like the Twingo or Daewoo Matiz, that still had 3 stars, and ofc the vehicles shown above. 97 with the official publication of the Crash Test, just 2 years after the NCAP was founded, was kinda of a wake up call. In 4 to 5 years the car world took a 180 spin

@@namenandern5531 That's because they were the model for sale in 96 - when mass testing of the new models began for NCAP 97 - and they were popular enough. At the time very few of the cars shown here were actually "new" : C-Class Merc was launched in 1993 the Punto was launched in 1992, so was the Micra (and the 2000 Micra is basically a facelift of the former), the 3-series BMW in 1991. Rover 100 started life as an Austin Metro in the 80s. Some of the cars that ranked well (apart from Volvos cause that's their thing) in 97 were actually built after the world knew Europe was gonna test their cars, which would be 1995. That would be the case of the Renault Mégane, for instance

I remember a chill going down my spine as my father at the time had a Metro. I came home and ordered him into get a used Volvo 340. He loved that car but I couldn't be going in it knowing what I'd read. Moving forward. In 2008 my mother was on the look out for a used car. She saw this tiny hatchback which had only got 2 stars from NCAP. She really liked it but I talked her into getting a Golf. In Apri that year my search ended when I found her a very good 2000 VW Golf estate. The following October we were out locally and someone flew through a junction and smashed up the car. Thankfully we both got out but my reason for the Golf was that it had a 4 out of 4 star from NCAP.

I wonder how many people here actually understand what hey are looking at. Some of these cars like the Merc and the BMW, the roof line collapsed, so it looks bad. But they designed to do that, so it absorbs energy, instead of transferring it to the occupants. The more worrying ones are like the Jeep the Lancia Ypsilon, where they stay too rigid and all that energy is transferred to the occupant and the other vehicle they crashed into.
@LuisMiguel-gr2hg4 жыл бұрын
Finally someone who knows this.
@gufo_tave4 жыл бұрын
Not agree. The cockpit should not be the part that absorb energy. The front and the rear sides should be the ones to absorb energy, while the cockpit should be rigid. If the car is ALL rigid is NO good -> no energy absorbtion. If the cockpit deformate is NO good -> reduce of space inside the cockpit, or even intrusion of car parts inside the cockpit. My 2 (euro)cents
@ibast14 жыл бұрын
@@gufo_tave That used to be the theory. Started with the post War Mercedes. But now they deliberately channel forces into the roof. Front and rear crumple zones are only meant to absorb up to a point in modern cars.

It's amazing how much car safety improved over just 20 years. If you compare some of the cars from the beginning, especially those typically "considered" safe, like MB or Saab, to even lower class ones from late 2000's, it becomes clear that you have better chances in the latter. Just looking at structural integrity of occupants space, in new cars you rarely see permanent roof deformation on partial frontal impact, whereas in older cars you wouldn't expect front doors to open, especially those on the side of the impact. It's great that such crashtests are performed, however it's also terrifying, because those are 3rd party tests, made on cars that already was on sale. If you bought one of these "worst" already, it's your problem, not company that produced such vehicle...

Small cars have a lower center of gravity and weigh less, making them easier to control. Large tall cars tend to roll over quite easily - especially on impact with smaller, lower vehicles. I have attended multiple crashes of some of these models. The Commodore was pretty good compared to the Volkswagen Kombi which was on a par with the Mini. In the latter, lower limb fractures were normal, the Kombi problem was the 1/16th steel front between you and what you hit. One thing that is not indicated is that the bigger vehicle, on average, wins. Mostly car versus power pole meant a dead passenger.

Surprised by the SAAB 900, just shows GM cost cutting probably had a hand in that. To be honest most of the cars shown here were probably standard for safety in the mid 90's, the Rover 100 looked the worst being a 17 year old design in 1997. People really should put a lot of emphasis on safety when buying cars, petrol heads ironically are the least likely to care about crash safety.
@nk53nxg4 жыл бұрын
Also a lot of older people I met in the past critisised newer cars for crumpling too easily when in an accident, they obviously ignored the engineering behind crumple zones. Newer cars were designed to dissipate the energy of a crash by the structure absorbing the impact through crumpling, as long as the passenger cell did not deform too much and cause injury to occupants. However if you are going too fast and hit a solid object no amount of passenger cell stiffness, crumple absorbtion or airbags will save you. Hitting a solid concrete block at 40mph in the safest car in the world could still kill you, the human body is fragile in high impact high G situations. People just do not realise the forces involved until an accident happens.

The Panda scored 4 stars when it was first launched in 2011. Interesting to see how the standards have changed so drastically in just that timeframe.

How does such a slow impact cause so much damage? Are the dummies exaggerating the injuries to get whiplash claims?

Also, these impacts are the same as a head--on collision. The stop is 'instant' compared to hitting a parked car which is pushed back, using up a lot of energy. Also the stopping distance is greater because of this, decreasing impact on the car and it's occupants.

Basically, you're already dead once you sign the order form for your new Fiat. That, I think, is the primary takeaway from this. What truly is worrying about this is the Italian police everywhere use Puntos and Pandas. I know this, because I saw it first hand.

what people dont realize is that these are the worst of the crash tests, back in the 90s everyone knew that if you bought a cheap car it prolly wasnt going to do well but it was cheap and affordable. now days because everyone wants safety for little johnny and little suzie, they dont want to compromised and want all the latest safety features that a high end model has, that cars have gone out of control in terms of pricing. no longer is there a cheap affordable car to get you from A to B while you work up to get a better one.

After seeing all these crash test on a varied selection of cars, all of sudden the Rover 100/Austin "Mini" Metro looks quite strong considering it was a 1970's design launched in 1980, folks we have to remember that, my classic car from 1965 would kill me if somebody hit the front of my car or I smashed into the back of their car, cocktail sausage anyone? as for my wife's 1988 Austin/Rover Mini City… Crumple Zone!

Rover Metro / 100, even with the optional drivers airbag fitted, was dreadful in the EURONCAP crash testing as it crumpled up and posed / caused serious injury risks to the driver's feet legs torso ankles and femurs. The problem is, Rover used the existing late 70's Austin Metro platform plans, gave the interior a mere cosmetic facelift, and in an attempt to save money gave the body a mere facelift by altering the rear light clusters and giving the front a slippery look with streamlined headlights. No real changes for driver / passenger safety at all. There is no way whatsoever a late 70's car platform can ever be improved for car safety without costly extensive modification and changes to the platform and bodyshell but Rover were unwilling to spend the money on improving for safety and just wanted a cheap car for the supermini lovers to shove out of the door and get into Rover showrooms asap.
