All References and Easter Eggs in The Railway Series

A couple of other "Easter eggs": 1) In "Duck and the Diesel Engine", Duck is accused of calling Gordon a "Galloping sausage". This was in reality an unflattering nickname for Sir Nigel Gresley's W1 loco. 2) In "Four Little Engines", Peter Sam leaves the Refreshment Lady behind at the top station. This is based on an incident which happened on the Talyllyn Railway in the early preservation era when a Guard gave the "right away" for the train to depart before the refreshment lady had boarded. The Guard was Reverend Wilbert Awdry himself!

The reason "N W" appears on the side of rolling stock is because the railway on Sodor is called the "Northwestern Railway". British Railways and British Petrolium appears because Sodor is between Britain and the Isle Of Man.

The N W on Awdry's original Thomas model initially stood for "Nowhere", but found it could stand for "Northwestern", too.

Another drawing based on a real photo is illustration #5 in "Bulldog" (Duke The Lost Engine), which is based on a reversal of a photograph of a derailment that happened when one of the Festiniog Railway's "Penrhyn Ladies" was double-heading with Prince.

There's also a continuity error in the foreword to Book 3 in that "THE AUTHOR" says that Nationalisation has taken place - which would place Book 3 onwards no earlier than 1/1/1948. I suspect Awdry originally intended for the stories to be contemporaneous with their time of publication but later retconned the timeline backwards.

@@LMS5935 However if a child wrote in to Awdry to say they'd spotted an error in the illustrations (e.g. there is an illustration which has Henry wearing Gordon's square buffers), rather than write back and say "the artist got it wrong", Awdry would where possible reply with a short story explaining what was in the picture (e.g. Henry damaged his buffers, but the Fat Controller only had spares of Gordon's, so Henry had to use those until the correct spares could be obtained).

Technically the Reverend W awdry appearance and Percy the small engine isn't Canon as he didn't have children yet in the timeline Percy came to Sodor sometime between 1926 and 1934
