With the "Star destroyer" classification, I think an appropriate name, given that ships like MC80Bs are called this, would be "Star cruiser", and have "Star destroyer" be an imperial distinction

The Dreadnaught class heavy cruiser is called a heavy cruiser because it's an over 100 years old design... At the time, it WAS a heavy cruiser. It's not well armed, though still fairly tough and it doesn't make the majority of the fleets because it's obsolete and only still in service because they needed more ships. They we're mostly used in the fringe against pirates and low tech worlds. They also needed a lot more crew than recent designs, you could have crewed almost 4 Victory class for every Dreadnaught, making them very ineficient.

I think a more sophisticated way to classify ships is based on volume or mass, what doesn't work as well when classifying ships with vastly different densities. Like, if you measure a vong, and an imperial ship, and classify them, you will vastly underestimate the vong ones.

Correction: The millennium falcon was actually originally built to move very large cargo around. How you might ask? Think of it like a backwards semi-truck. The gap in the front would dock with a large freightbox and the millennium falcon would push it through space along hypderdrive lanes. In Attack of the Clones you can actually see the falcon flying next to the Senate building. By the time of A New Hope it's already a very old ship, part of a decommissioned line and heavily modified.

hey thanks, ive been wondering about this for ages (years). you are right that the authors have very little consistency with ship naming or size classification and ive found it very annoying but its probably my ocd and interest in the navy talking. as a note, i remember reading somewhere that a star destroyer is any ship with the firepower to burn a planet by itself. the imperial class was a good fit here, it took some work but it could do it, 3 could do it within a day (or maybe a few days i cant remember) either way that's a lot of firepower.

Around 7:20 In the old West End Games D6 Star Wars tabletop rpg books, the Dreadnaught cruiser was made by a company called Rendili StarDrives. So, in my tabletop rpg, I just call them Rendili cruisers to cut down on the confusion. Back then they weren't using the term 'dreadnaught' for ships larger than a star destroyer.

Hey Eck, Fleet building question. I am putting together, lets say for now a “theoretical” medium sized fleet. Both Imperial and Rebel that are going to be designed to go head to head. Im having trouble choosing a ship for the Imperial side to act as a “Capital Ship” that would be considered an even match against a Rebel fleet whose Flag ship is a Nebulon B. *Question is* What Imperial Large Scale ship would be considered a close equal to the Nebulon B. My guess was either a Vigil class based off firepower, or a “Arquitens” Cruiser based on length and seeing it in different combat rolls. Question 1.5 is how would those 2 fair against eachother in a fair mock combat; no “Jedi devilry” as Thron put it ,fight. I do assume I will add corvettes and fighters but the choice of the Imperial flag ship is key.

It's an upgrade of the Arquitens-class Republic cruiser, @Daniel Peters , which was seen in Clone Wars and Rebels. The original one was between 170 and 237 metres long. In the Mandalorian it's an updated, enlarged version, somewhere between 381 metres (official length) and 670 metres (scaled to the crashing Lambda shuttle) And has updated engines, weapons and more Tie hangars added.

I'm late so you probably won't see this, but I would like to see a video on how many rebel ships you think it would take to defeat an executor class star destroyer. Now I'm aware that one a wing took one down at the battle of endor, but that was mainly pure luck and convenience to the plot. I would like to see realistically how large of a fleet you think it would take.

So basically for combative ships (from smallest to largest) it goes: starfighter Transports/gunship/shuttles Corvette Frigate Destroyer Cruiser Battleship Dreadnought Space station. An imperial star destroyer is a heavy cruiser btw. Not a destroyer. Star Wars ship classes can get a little tricky but I know them all. There are also other classes but I just listen the main out-of-atmosphere ships

personally i'd class most of the larger ships as either battlecarriers or aircraft carrying cruisers (or in this case starfighter carrying cruiser.) most of the larger ships seem to follow a more soviet esque doctrine it seems where the aircraft carried are either only sensor platforms or defensive in nature with the carrier itself having the primary weapons of destruction, compared to a full on aircraft carrier where the aircraft are the primary offensive weapon delivery systems. for an example see the plans to modernize the iowa class battleships as battlecarriers with an aft flight deck and some harriers, and the russian aircraft carrying cruisers, and ASW helicopter carriers/helicopter cruisers.

In real life naval classification depends on armament and role rather than size for most ships. Frigates/corvettes are small light escort or patrol vessel. Destroyers are the primary multi-role escort vessels of a fleet. Cruisers are the primary multi-role attack ship separated into light and heavy by the level of armament and speed. Battleships were the heavy artillery of fleets that have since been made obsolete by aircraft. Battlecruisers/pocket-battleships were a cross between cruisers and battleships meant for relatively high speed and firepower. Carriers are typically medium to large vessels dedicated to carrying aircraft.

I would have based the ranking system on combat role ie dreadnaught as you did, a fleet killer. Battle cruisers as your capital heavy ships that have heavy armour and weapons designed for delivering and taking heavy bombardment. Cruisers which carry similar armament to a battle cruiser but sacrifices armour for maneuverability. Frigates as support/screening ships that bolster the fire power of a capital ship and tasked with taking out fighter craft. Destroyers as more screen and heavy weapons for killing support classes (frigate and below). Corvettes as fighter screens.

I wish they'd use or at least cleave close to the navel warship types. Major classifications: - commercial ships (used for ship classes designed for non-military purposes) - industrial ships ( designed for non-commercial non-war purposes like transport, hauling, etc) - sub-capital ships (war ships destined for war/battle but smaller than capital size used to supplement capital ships) - capital Ships (large military warships that serve as the backbone of fleets) In each classification there's types or classes based on size and function: Industrial ships: - transport ships (used for transporting personnel) - hauler/cargo ships (vastly varies in size but used to transport goods and cargo material) Sub-capital warships: -Corrvettes (small ships used for fighting other ships) - frigates ( slightly bigger than corvettes but not by much. Generally used for harming other small ships and fighters and able to deploy fighters tho not much) - destroyers (bigger than frigates by a tad but able to use cruiser sized weapons, designed to take out specialty ships and larger ships) - cruisers (medium sized warships with bigger guns and armor but slower) - battle cruisers (slightly larger than cruisers that use battle ship guns but vulnerable armor, glass Cannons) - battleship (largest sub capital warship, difficulty in fighting smaller ships (i.e. Star destroyers)) Capital ships: - carriers (giant support warships used for ability to carry a large number of personell, fighters, and other warships. Essentially a mini movable command center) - dreadnoughts (giant capital sized warships designed for mounting giant weapons for dealing the most damage possible. Best against structures and such(i.e. Executor)) - super-weapons ("ships" that are ginormous and singularly used for their ability to mount weapons of catastrophic destruction (deathstars, mega star destroyer, etc) From there there are specific ship classes that designate specific designs and or function (the fact that all three levels are all "classes" makes it initially confusing) that are usually named after the name given to the first of that line. Then theres specialists classes of the above like assault frigate, reconn cruisers, and the like. But they are just specialization to the class that are diff enough to warrant a name. Then there's ships outside of the big 4 classifications like: - entertainment barges (I guess that'd be included in commercial ships) - fighters (1-2 manned starships used almost exclusively to combat other deployed fighters and supplement larger crewed war ships(it's not included because they don't require a "crew" per-say. ) Then there's the term "flagship" which isn't a class but rather a designation of a ship (almost exclusively a capital ship) that serves as the centerpiece of a large fleet. Though more than one can be active in a battle. ^ I feel like this would be better for Star Wars as it's more recognizable in that it cleaves to established navel classifications. Just imo tho

Granted, in Star Wars, the Death Stars are referred to as space stations, but space stations don't go from planet to planet, they remain in one spot. So, from a certain point of view, both Death Stars are ships. What class would they be?

When she is hauling cargo the cargo pod part of the freighter fits into the slit in the front and this is why the cockpit is strained all the way to the right so they can see around the cargo. Now with Han Solo behind the wheel the falcon is used for smuggling not for hauling Freight.

There is actuall super drednought class that includes 2 ships: Eye of Palpatine and that was biggest ship ever (it was as long as an executor but it was designed to imitate an asteroid so it was much wider and thicker) it actually could indoctrinate like mass effect reaper. The second one is is star of corusount (I should adress that its smaller but it was old republic ship) it took a beating from 3 imperial fleets i think? then fell down from the orbit on hoth and hull was intact.

I'm honestly curious... Aren't all ships larger than a corvette now obsolete? I mean starfighter size vessels have hyperdrives and it's been established in lore you can hyperspace ram ships to destroy them without regards to weapons or armor.

The mileniumfalcon isnot made for small but big loads .It was made to push big containers that would be placed in to the gap at the front thats why the cocpit is not in the centre because otherwise you could not see anithing

it is a small ship, so it is not designed to haul anything but small freight. Something like a lucrehulk or FSCV is for heavy freight

That big triangle spacecraft can fly through the area between the universes. In real it is smaller, and looks like an F-35 combined with the star wars type. It takes years to travel such a distance, some creatures can do this within few hours only.
